Chopper-modulated gas chromatography electroantennography enabled using high-temperature MEMS flow control device

We report the design,fabrication and characterization of a microelectromechanical systems(MEMS)flow control device for gas chromatography(GC)with the capability of sustaining high-temperature *** further demonstrate the use of this new device in a novel MEMS chopper-modulated gas chromatography-electroantennography(MEMS-GC-EAG)system to identify specific volatile organic compounds(VOCs)at extremely low *** device integrates four pneumatically actuated microvalves constructed via thermocompression bonding of the polyimide membrane between two glass substrates with *** overall size of the device is 32 mm×32 mm,and it is packaged in a 50 mm×50 mm aluminum housing that provides access to the fluidic connections and allows thermal *** characterization reveals that each microvalve in the flow control chip provides an ON to OFF ratio as high as 1000:*** device can operate reliably for more than 1 million switching cycles at a working temperature of 300℃.Using the MEMS-GC-EAG system,we demonstrate the successful detection of cis-11-hexadecenal with a concentration as low as 1 pg at a demodulation frequency of 2 Hz by using an antenna harvested from the male Helicoverpa Virescens *** addition,1μg of a green leafy volatile(GLV)is barely detected using the conventional GC-EAG,while MEMS-GC-EAG can readily detect the same amount of GLV,with an improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)of~22 *** expect that the flow control device presented in this report will allow researchers to explore new applications and make new discoveries in entomology and other fields that require high-temperature flow control at the microscale.

Application of new void detection algorithm for analysis of feed pressure and rotation pressure of roof bolters

Roof and rib instability is an important issue in underground mining. To optimize ground support design,enhance ground stability, and reduce the possibility of roof or rib failure with minimal use of artificial ground support, it is essential to have an accurate understanding of ground conditions. This includes the location of voids, cracks, and discontinuities, as well as information about the different strata in the immediate roof. This paper briefly introduces ongoing research on void detection by using the roof bolter feed and rotation pressure. The goal of this project is to improve the sensitivity of detection programs to locate smaller joints and reduce the number of false alarms. This paper presents a brief review of the testing procedures, data analysis, logic, and algorithms used for void detection. In addition, this paper discusses the results of preliminary laboratory tests and statistical analysis of the data from these two drilling parameters used for void detection.

Assessment of green roof performance for sustainable buildings under winter weather conditions

A green roof is a specialized roof system that supports vegetation growth on *** technology is rapidly gaining popularity as a sustainable design option for *** order to contribute to an understanding of green roof in regions with cold winters and snow,an on-site experimental investigation was present with a focus on the assessment of green roof performance during the *** field experiment took place on a six small buildings during the winter of *** work monitored three buildings with green roofs,two buildings with reference roofs and one building with a bare soil coverage for the *** six buildings were identically constructed and instrumented with sensor networks to provide heat flux data through the *** 15 min averaged data were statistically analyzed for a week under the two separate periods,first without a snow cover and second with a snow *** results show that the roof type is a significant factor in affecting the thermal performance of these *** importantly,green roofs reduce heat flow through the roof and thus reduce the heating energy demand during the ***,the energy savings for buildings with the green roofs are reduced under snow conditions because the snow diminishes thermal resistance of the roof and increases the heat transfer process through the roofs.

Our societies are highly dependent on reliable cooling for air conditioning(AC)and ***,modern cooling is supported by a 19th century technology:vapor compression cycle(VCC)-based *** used in the VCC cooling are strong greenhouse gases and thus are among the leading causes of global *** electrocaloric(EC)cooling is attractive as an alternative to the VCC *** cooling is environmentally benign,compressor-free,highly scalable,and has the potential of achieving higher efficiency than VCC *** active EC materials research since the late 2000s has created several EC materials that exhibit giant electrocaloric effect(ECE)(by direct measurement).These EC materials have enabled the demonstration of EC cooling devices that exhibit temperature lifts of more than 8 *** EC materials and device research reveals the promise of fer-roelectric materials in generating giant ECE at low electric fields and EC cooling devices achieving high *** review highlights these advances and offers perspectives of the EC cooling technologies.

Emerging therapies in gastrointestinal cancers

Members of the receptor tyrosine kinase family, that include EGFR, ErbB-2/HER-2, ErbB-3/HER-3 and ErbB-4/ HER-4, are frequently implicated in experimental models of epithelial cell neoplasia as well as in human cancers. Therefore, interference with the activation of these growth factor receptors represents a promising strategy for de- velopment of novel and selective anticancer therapies. Indeed, a number of inhibitors that target either EGFR or HER-2, with the exception of a few that target both; have been developed for treatment of epithelial cancers. Since most solid tumors express different ErbB receptors and/or their ligands, identification of inhibitor(s), targeting multiple EGFR family members may provide a therapeutic benefit to a broader patient population. Here we describe the significance of an ErbB family of receptors in epithelial cancers, and summarize different available therapeutics targeting these receptors. It also emphasizes the need to develop pan-ErbB inhibitors and discusses EGF-Receptor Related Protein, a recently isolated negative regulator of EGFR as a potential pan-ErbB therapeutic for a wide vari- ety of epithelial cancers.

Synthesis of β-alkynyl α-amino acids via palladium-catalyzed alkynylation of unactivated C(sp^3)-H bonds

β-Di-substituted α-amino acids(AAs) contain adjacent carbon stereogenic centers and pose considerable synthetic challenge. Complementary to the conventional synthesis strategies based on the transformation of existing functional groups, we envisioned these molecules could be quickly accessed via selective functionalization of sp3 hybridized C-H bonds on the side chains of common α-AA precursors. We report a readily applicable method to prepare β-alkynyl α-amino acids via Pd-catalyzed diastereoselective C(sp3)-H alkynylation of common α-amino acids precursors with acetylene bromide.

Targeted immunotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer

Targeted therapies that deliver the expected anti-tumor effects while mitigating the adverse effects are taking the cancer world by storm. The need for such therapies in non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC), where systemic cytotoxic chemotherapies still remain the backbone of management, is felt more than ever before. Runway success of immunotherapies such as Ipilimumab for melanoma has brought excitement among oncologists. Immune-based treatments are in various stages of evaluation for NSCLC as well. Immunotherapies using strategies of antigen based or cell based vaccines, and blocking immune checkpoints are of substantial interest. Meaningful clinical responses are yet to be reaped from these new treatment modalities.

One concept for immune therapy of cancer involves induction of antigen mimic antibodies to trigger the immune response against tumor cells. Anti-idiotypic antibodies directed against the antigen-binding site of antibodies specific for tumor antigen may functionally and even structurally mimic antigen and induce anti-anti-idiotypic immune response. Monoclonal antibody W J02 is one of such anti-idiotypic antibodies, which contains internal image of CA125. In order to improve the immunospecificity of mAb WJ02, we constructed a single chain of mAb WJ02 in Vl-linker-Vh orientation. The scFv-WJ02, could be expressed and secreted in the recombinant Pichia pastoris system. The secreted scFv protein with a molecular weight of 30 kD retained the biological activity of mAb WJ02, which was proved by a direct binding assay and inhibition experiment. Our results indicated that the scFv-WJ02 could be used as a possible tool for idiotypic therapy against ovarian cancer, which might enhance the possibility of eliminating nonspecific responses induced by mAb WJ02.
