The authors report a case of hepatic glycogen storage diseases type III (Cori-Forbes disease) of a Métis 3-year-old girl born and resident in C?te d'Ivoire. The discovery of this disease was made at the age of 2 years in the diagnosis of abdominal mass in a child subject to frequent hypoglycemia. The management currently consists of a diet enriched with glucose and maltose dextrin. We note in our case, a failure to thrive despite the persistent support.

Objective: pediatric jaundice is caused by various conditions. Although some data is available on this issue, data from Mali is insufficient. The present retrospective observational study was an attempt to determine the etiology of pediatric jaundice in the pediatric department of Gabriel Touré teaching hospital in Bamako, Mali. Methods: We reviewed all pediatric patients with jaundice who were hospitalized and treated in this department during January 1 to December 31, 2016 (n = 168). Result: Pediatric jaundice patients accounted for 1.88% of the hospitalized patients, with median age of 6 years and male/female ratio being 1.6. Infectious, cholestatic, and hemolytic jaundice accounted for 75%, 11% and 10%, respectively. Malaria and sickle cell disease accounted for 67% and 9%, respectively. Hepatomegaly and splenomegaly were observed in 49 (29%) and 23 (13.7%) patients, respectively. Of 168, 9 patients died. Conclusion: Infectious jaundice, especially jaundice due to malaria, was the most frequent. However, variety of etiologies was observed, of which the practitioners should be aware. The observation presented here may become fundamental data in health-policy making in this area.

Introduction: Infant and child mortality is a worldwide concern, but developing countries such as Mali are more affected. The aim of this study was to investigate morbidity and factors associated with mortality in children aged 1 month to 15 years. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study which took place from January 1 to December 31, 2020 covering children aged 1 month to 15 years hospitalized at the Kalaban-Coro CSRéf. Data were entered into Excel and analyzed using SPSS version 20 software. Results: Five hundred children aged 1 months to 15 years were included. The age range 1 to 5 years (53.6%) and male sex (58.2%) were the most represented. Malaria (72.2%), acute respiratory infections (6.2%) and diarrhea/dehydration (3%) were the main morbidities. Mortality was estimated at 10.6%, and the two main causes of death were malaria (56.6%) and acute respiratory infections (7.54%). Univariate analysis revealed a statistically significant association between the dependent variable (death) and age (p Conclusion: This study confirms the high rate of infant and child morbidity and mortality in our health facilities. Strengthening human resources and intensifying behavior-change communication can help reverse the trend.

Introduction:?Tuberculosis is one of the top ten causes of death in the world. Purpose:?The purpose of this study was to describe the different locations of tuberculosis and the diagnostic means used in our department. Methods:?This was a descriptive retrospective study of children under 15 years of age admitted in 2018 for tuberculosis. The variables under study were socio-demographic, clinical, paraclinical and evolutionary data Results:?Forty-eight children were enrolled. The median age was 8.2 years (± 4.5) and the M/F ratio was 1.4. TB contamination was found?in 20.8% of cases and the index was often a family member (80%). The median diagnostic time was 49 (± 33) days. Six patients had positive HIV serology, 82% had acute malnutrition and lung examination was abnormal in the majority of cases (70.8%). Thorax-ray abnormalities were common (81%) and tuberculin skin testing was positive in 70.6% of cases. The diagnosis was confirmed in 29.2% of the children and the confirmatory examinations were direct examination (9 cases), lymph node biopsy (4?cases) and rapid test (Expert MTB/RIF) (one case). In 70.8% of cases, this was a diagnostic presumption. Pulmonary tuberculosis accounted for 72.9% of which 39.6% multifocal forms and extra-thoracic form 27.1%. Thirty-nine patients had received standard TB treatment and death occurred in 22.9% of cases. Conclusion:?Children are a high-risk population for TB, especially in cases of family infection. Contacts screening through a systematic approach to diagnosis will reduce deaths. Diagnostic difficulties can be partly overcome by improving the accessibility of rapid testing.

Sickle-cell disease (SCD) represents a substantial public health problem in Gabon. Fever is one of the principal reasons for the hospitalization of children afflicted by major sickle-cell disorder, since it can be a clinical reflection of severe infections that have the potential to become life threatening. Objectives: Identification of the main causes of fever in children with SCD in our clinical setting, with the aim of optimizing treatments. Patients and Methods: This is a retrospective study of all the medical files for children with SCD that were admitted to our ward, over a two year period, due to fever (>38.5°C) lasting more than 24 hours. Only those files that contained at least the following five fundamental medical examinations were retained for further evaluation: Complete Blood Count (CBC), blood smear, blood culture, urine culture and chest X-ray. Out of a total of 118 admissions (103 patients), 87 (73.7%) were due to the incidence of fever. The medical files of 11 patients were deemed to be unusable. Seventy-six episodes of fever were observed among 69 children, of which 42 were male and 27 female (sex ratio of 1.5). Among these, seven (10%) were admitted twice. Results: The age groups that were most affected included 12 - 18 year-olds (30 cases: 43.5%) and 6 - 12 year-olds (26 cases: 37.7%). The most common accompanying symptoms were bone and joint pain (43.4%), asthenia (22.4%), cough (19.7%), vomiting (17%) and headache (15.8%). The specific cause of the fever could not be pinpointed in 29 cases (38.1%). Aside from these cases, the main causes of fever were malaria (30.3%) and bronchopulmonary infections (22.4%). The white blood cell count was >20,000/mm3 in 47% of respiratory infections, 43.5% of the cases involving malaria and 55.2% of cases of fever with unknown cause. Graves’ disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. Adequate management is an area of controversy, especially when it comes to children. The objective of our study was to assess the outcome of Graves’ disease treatment in Albert Royer Children Hospital of Dakar. This was a retrospective study conducted from 2001 to 2015, and which involved all children between 0 to 15 years of age who were being monitored in the Albert Royer National Children Hospital. The evolutionary modalities were: stability, remission, failure, relapse, lost to follow-up and death. The data were analyzed with SPSS software version 20.0. For the comparisons, the KHI 2 or Fisher test was used with a significance threshold (p < 0.05). During the study period, 88 children were enrolled. The average age was 8.6 years [ranging from 8 months to 15 years]. The consultation delay was 11.36 months. In our study, 61.4% of the patients were regular in the follow-up, the observance was good in 40.9% of the cases and 19 patients (21.6%) were lost to follow-up. Clinical courses of 69 children after treatment with Carbimazole for 37 months were promising in 21 cases (30.43%), with 17 cases of remission (24.63%) and 4 cases of stability (5.8%). Age older than 10, the initial ATD dose greater than 1 mg/kg/day and the initial free T4 lower than 50 pmol/l were significantly associated with remission with a p value of 0.01;0.024 and 0.004.

Scleroderma is a rare disease with two primary forms: localized scleroderma (LS) and systemic sclerosis (SSc). Both are chronic conditions that can manifest in various patterns (subtypes) and are linked to extracutaneous involvement in pediatric patients. Juvenile SSc poses a higher risk of morbidity and mortality, with patients facing life-threatening complications such as lung, heart, and visceral organ fibrosis, and vasculopathy. In contrast, mortality is extremely rare in juvenile LS, but patients are susceptible to significant morbidity, leading to severe disfigurement and functional impairment. Treatment for scleroderma aims to control inflammation and address specific issues. An early diagnosis significantly enhances the overall outcome. This study conducts a retrospective descriptive analysis aiming to document the clinical manifestations, management approaches, and outcomes of systemic sclerosis in a cohort of nine children receiving treatment for juvenile systemic sclerosis at pediatric B department of Mohammed VI University, Hospital Center in Marrakech, Morocco.

Purpose： To explore the advantages of palmar approach with Kirschner-wire （K-wire） fixation in the treatment of children＇s distal radius extension type fracture, Methods： Thirty patients, average age of 8.5 years ranging from 5 to 13 years, with distal radius extension type fracture and undergoing a failed manual reposition in our hospital were included, and treated by palmar approach with K-wire fixation between May 2014 and December 2017. Among these patients （21 male and 9 female）, 5 patients had chronic injuries over 10 days, and 6 patients had fracture of the distal radius epiphysis. The time between injury and treatment ranged from 1 to 30 days. Among them, 11 patients with right-sided fractures and 19 patients with left-sided fractures were operated via the palmar longitudinal incision approach. Results： The results were evaluated after an average of 18 months ranging from 5 to 36 months after operation. The recovery time of fracture was from 4 to 8 weeks and all incisions were primary healing with an average of 6 weeks. Nonunion, delayed union, early closure of distal radial epiphysis, and wrist varus/valgus deformity were not found in all the cases. Based on Gartland and Wereley wrist score assessment undertaken three months after operation, excellent scores were achieved in 24 cases, good scores in 3 cases, acceptable scores in 3 cases. Conclusion： The palmar approach with K-wire fixation via a front longitudinal incision in the treatment of children＇s distal radius extension type fracture has following advantages：（1） easy to reposition for both fresh and old fractures; （2） less damage to surrounding tissues and epiphysis; （3） quick recovery. It is suitable to treat children＇s distal radius extension type fracture.
