Identification of landing sites for rescue helicopters in mountains with use of Geographic Information Systems

Helicopters are often used in mountain rescue both for rescuers moving in the area of accidents and for evacuating victims, but in steep or forested terrain finding a landing place can be problematic. The main aim of this research is to use Digital Elevation Model(DEM) and cartographic database analysis to select locations that can be used as landing site for the rescue helicopters. Methods were based on GIS analysis;both raster and vector data were used for identifying touchdown points for rescue helicopters. Based on DEM data, locations with a low slope gradient were identified;topographic vector data were used for identifying unforested sites. Then buffer zones for buildings and power lines were excluded, and it was checked whether the areas had any topographic features that prevented helicopter landings. The findings were verified on an orthophotomap. In result, GIS analyses have selected 1232 polygons that fulfilled initial criteria. Their verification on orthophotomap has shown that only 55% of them could be potentially used as landing site. Landing sites can be found mainly on side ridges of mountain ranges and in valley beds, when those on ridges are most important in this research. The greatest difficulties and methodological challenges are posed by: identification of sites having a shape which prevents landing, the obsolescence of data due to environment dynamics, the presence of features that are not shown on maps but prevent helicopter landings. A map of landing sites is a very useful tool to conduct rescue operations, but each use of a given landing site requires both in-field and numerical verification. The analysis demonstrated that GIS toolsare useful in pre-planning of rescue missions, and also showed that such data must be kept up-to-date and in-field verification is needed continuously, the more so as it plays an important role in ensuring the safety of rescuers and victims.

Permanence of Economic Potential of Cities Based on Sector Development

The paper attempts to answer the following key question: how will a city′s world rank change in the face of crisis in its main economic sector? Crisis is defined here as a decline in financial performance in the given sector, which leads to the decline of its constituent firms and corporations on the world economic scene. The World Economic Center Index(WECI) has been created in order to rank cities based on the value of their resident corporations by sector and show their level of stability upon the removal of the most important sector. This provides information on the potential of each analyzed city as well as on its advanced features or area of specialization. Research has shown that nearly half the World Economic Centers are dominated by the financial and materials sectors of the economy. Different sectors dominate different regions of the world. For example, consumer staples and materials were dominant in North America, while information technology and financials were dominant in Europe. In Asia, several sectors tend to dominate the economy. Research has shown that the ability of a principal economic sector to resist economic crisis largely depends on the strength of the command and control function of a city. Finally, a high globalization level of a city is a key determinant of its susceptibility to economic crisis.

Translation as a Cross-cultural Phenomenon ＂The Country of Miracles＂ in Translation

The article constitutes an attempt to depict the complexity of translation as a cross-cultural phenomenon. It discusses the author＇s own translation of ＂Kraj cud6w＂--one of Jerzy Pilch＇s feature articles from the collection Pociqg do ~,ycia wiecznego （The Train to Eternal Life） and aims at answering the following question： which translation procedures that deal with culturemes are the most frequently applied and prevalent in the presented sample of the translation？ In the contrastive analysis Peter Newmark＇s translation procedures have been used. Moreover, the aim of the article is to describe translation as a cross-cultural phenomenon and discuss a person of a translator as an intercultural link.

The Prospects for the Development of Geotourism in the Area of the Wadi Rum Desert

The main objective of this study was to present the possibilities of the development ofgeotourism in the area of the nature reserve and the UNESCO World Heritage. The scope of the research included the directions of the transformation of the existing development of tourism and the use of the Wadi Rum Desert, in the opinion of the local Bedouin population and their activities involving the promotion of geotourism and the increase of the competitiveness in the further development of tourism. The observations and the records of tourism as well as the diagnostic tests among the Bedouin tribes living in the area of human settlements on the desert of Wadi Rum were conducted. According to the local community, geotourism was a very positive factor in the economic development of the rural settlements and the desert region. It was considered that the most important in the development of geotourism was the preservation and strengthening of the geological heritage of the desert as well as its use in tourism. The young people could see the opportunities to create new jobs, and the increase in the economic development of the region. The challenges that geotourism in Jordan must face are primarily to encourage and make tourists interested in the natural and cultural values of the region. Additionally, the coherent platform for the exchange of the experiences between the spheres of science, business, and government as well as non-governmental organizations should be created.

Mathematical Modelling of the Transient Response of Pipeline

Magnetic susceptibility of Al_2RE compounds in crystal and liquid states

Magnetic susceptibility of Al2RE （RE=Y, Ce, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Yb） compounds was studied experimentally in wide temperature （T=290–2000 K） and field （B=0.3–1.3 T） intervals. The abnormal increase in susceptibility beginning above the melting point was fixed for all the compositions. The values for the effective magnetic moments per RE atoms in these compounds were found to be smaller than the values typical for free ions RE3＋. The results were discussed in supposition of the directed bonds between aluminum and rare-earth atoms.

Demythologizing the South： Cormac McCarthy＇s Suttree in an Intertextual Perspective

The article is structured around a premise of intertextuality, which is suggested not only by McCarthy＇s own more or less overt allusions to Faulkner＇s writing but also by the very name of his protagonist Suttree, which is evocative of the name of perhaps the best known Faulkner villain Thomas Sutpen. This supposition in turn leads to an argument that in his 1979 novel McCarthy does indeed reverse the life story of Thomas Sutpen by making Suttree descend down the very path that Sutpen ascended a century and a half before him, i.e., from the ranks of Southern aristocracy to the scum of the earth, and in defiance of the same ideology that Sutpen went to great lengths to embrace. Thus, an intertextual and comparative approach to McCarthy＇s novel not only in the context of Faulkner＇s Absalom, Absalom! but also his Light in August （cf. Joe Christmas） and The Sound and the Fury （cf. Quentin） as well as Ellen Glasgow＇s short story ＂Jordan＇s End＂ demonstrates that what Cormac McCarthy actually does in Suttree is to demythologize the South, complete with its aristocratic pretensions （＂doing pretty＂）, dubious morality （incest） and fear of miscegenation （obsession with time and the double）. Moreover, in doing so, he defamiliarizes it by reducing it to its Other （poor whites and African Americans）, whose authenticity, liveliness and charitability defy the affectation, lifelessness and decadence of the aristocratic South.

Radioprotective thermally generated free-radical dextrins

Effect of doses of the X-ray radiation from 0 to 400 Gy upon granular cornstarch and dextrins (British gums, BG) thermally generated from it at 230-300℃ was recognized with quantitative EPR and IR ab-sorption spectroscopy, molecular mass distribution in the depolymerization products, Scanning Elec-tron Microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. Fractal analysis of the profiles of molecular mass distribu-tion showed that the depolymerization involved debranching of amylopectin. Roasting of cornstarch produced BG which differed in concentration and EPR parameters of stable free radicals from BG generated by X-ray radiation. Two types of stable free radicals, with Gaussian and Lorentzian shapes of EPR signals, were recognized. The shapes of the signals and temperature dependence on free radical intensity indicated exchanging interactions of the antiferromagnetic type, causing partial quenching of the spins at-196℃ (77K). Upon X-ray irradiation, new radicals were generated, the number and stability of which strongly depended on the types of radicals present before irradiation. These radicals slowly ceased because of a repolymerization of BG on storage.
