Development of Conceptual Framework from the View of patients and Professionals on patient engagement: A Qualitative Study in Hong Kong SAR, China

Objective: To investigate patient engagement to gain understandings of professional and patient’s views and inform the development of a patient engagement conceptual framework for further development of a valid and reliable evaluated measure. Method: 17 selected hospitals from Hong Kong East Cluster, Hong Kong West Cluster, Kowloon Central Cluster, Kowloon East Cluster and New Territory East Cluster of Hospital Authority Hong Kong involved in the study. Focus groups were conducted with 37 medical staffs, which included 15 doctors and 22 nurses, and 33 patients. Semi-structured qualitative interview study, with purposive sampling and constant comparative analysis. Results: Data were analyzed using a qualitative approach of latent content analysis. patient engagement is a multi-dimensional concept. Five hierarchical themes separately from the patient and medical staff’s perspectives containing different conceptions and attitudes related to patient engagement have been identified and summarized. Through analyzing both professional and patients’ perspectives, a hierarchical framework incorporating patients-professional dynamically fluctuating relationship was built. The framework divides engagement into five levels and five stages. Conclusions: patient engagement is recognized by more patients and professionals as a means and a cornerstone to build the foundation of patient-centered-care. Our framework encourages that patient engagement related to not only an individual patient’s behavior but a reciprocal, dynamic and pluralistic relationship with their professionals and healthcare systems. Understand this relationship can help us better conceptualizing, evaluating, and implementing interventions to improve the population’s health.

Citation Classics in patient engagement Research: An Analysis of the 50 Most Cited Articles

Background: patient engagement offers a promising pathway toward improved population health, better-quality care, and greater cost efficiency. The objective of the current study is to identify and analyze the characteristics of the 50 most frequently cited articles in patient engagement journals. Methods: The ISI Journal Citation Reports: Science Edition 2014 database was used to determine the most frequently cited published articles in Dec 2016. The most cited 50 articles were selected and assessed according to the published journal, origin of institutions, publication year, impact factor, topic, and type of study. Results: The 50 selected articles were published in 19 journals, the majority of which originated from the UK. The most common study design was quantitative study and reviews. The improvement of health care services quality and the construction of engagement model were the top two topics. And 2013 is the most published year receiving the most citations. Conclusions: Our findings provide a historical perspective on the scientific progress of patient engagement and allow for recognition of important developments and limitations in this field.

Views and Experience on patient engagement in Healthcare Professionals and patients—How Are They Different?

A patient-centered approach is used to build a therapeutic alliance between patients and the healthcare professionals in care process which should be supported by a good engagement of both parties. The study aimed to explore the gap between healthcare professionals and patients on patient engagement in hospital. It was a cross-sectional survey. 2774 doctors and nurses from Department of Medicine of public hospitals completed the self-administered questionnaire and 1042 patients discharged from corresponding wards completed the telephone interviews. Participants were interviewed using structural questionnaires. The Mann-Whitney test or Pearson’s chi-square test was used to analyze the agreement between health-care professionals and patients on the views and experiences of patient engagement. A difference was considered to be statistically significant when the p-value was patient engagement, there was a discrepancy on understanding, views and experiences. More healthcare professionals particularly in nursing were concerned about the possible negative impact of the engagement. The majority of healthcare professionals reported that they engaged well with patients, and perceived more difficulties than patients did. The findings highlighted the mutual understanding of patient engagement, involvement and challenges encountered by both groups in Department of Medicine, which was crucial in efforts to provide meaningful patient engagement in regards to jurisdictions, health system, specialty, discipline and background of patients. It provided insight that a collaborative strategy involving both healthcare professional and patients might be an alternative approach to improving patient engagement.

Objective:The objective of the study is to describe the work-related quality of life(WRQOL)among nurses and explore its association with performance evaluation ***:A cross-sectional design was utilized measuring the WRQOL scale and the previous performance appraisal *** sampling approach was utilized with nurses stratified based on their position and then systematically random sampled based on their unit ***:One hundred and eighty-two nurses were *** half reported a high quality of work life(101;55.5%).Low scores were noted on the subscale working conditions(100;54.9%),low to average responses for home-work interface(109;59.9%),control at work(100;54.9%),and stress at work(90;49.5%).A higher proportion of nurses reported positive responses toward the areas of general well-being(113;62.1%)and job-career satisfaction(112;61.5%),than in the other *** were notable differences between WRQOL ratings:(1)Head nurses had the highest perceived quality of work life,followed by nurse supervisors and charge nurses(F=6.1,Ppatient services reported lower quality of working life,while those in office and outpatient services had more positive scores(F=4.6,P<0.01).Conclusion:Only more than half of the nurses reported a high quality of work life,some of its dimensions,particularly job and career satisfaction and working conditions,appeared to vary in the perceived degree across years in service,work hours,and *** assessment of the quality of work life may serve as an important tool to address staff burnout,absenteeism and other issues that affect job performance among health-care professionals.

Health Behaviors and Outcomes of Mobile Health Apps and patient engagement in the USA

Mobile health applications, or mHealth apps, have gained popularity due to their practical functions and strengthening the connection between patients and healthcare professionals. These apps are designed for managing health and well-being on portable devices, allowing individuals to self-manage their health or healthcare practitioners to enhance patient care. Key features include personalized recommendations, data synchronization with other health devices, and connectivity with healthcare professionals. The research describes how mobile health applications support healthy behaviors, facilitate communication between patients and physicians, and empower individuals in the United States to take charge of their health. This study also examines how adults in the US use mobile health applications, or mHealth apps, on their tablets or smartphones for health-seeking purposes. The information was taken from Cycle 4 of the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS 4). The challenges regarding these mobile health apps have also been evaluated with possible remedies. Around 100 university students participated in a cross-sectional study by answering questions on their eating habits, physical activity, lifestyle choices related to health, and use of mobile health apps. The data was then analyzed and concluded as a result. Mobile health applications have brought about a significant shift in the way patients connect with their healthcare providers by providing them with convenient access to health services and information. By keeping track of health markers like diet, exercise, and medication compliance, patients may use these tools to help better manage their chronic conditions. Mobile health applications can improve patient outcomes and save healthcare costs by empowering patients to take charge of their health. Beliefs and Practices Regarding Spirituality as a Healthcare Strategy

Objective: This study examined the perceptions and practices of medical personnel regarding the spirituality in the treatment management plan of their patients. Methods: A spirituality survey was administered to doctors and nurses, soliciting responses about their beliefs and willingness to include spirituality practices in treating patients within their facility. Respondents were asked to give their views on daily practices regarding the use of spirituality in patient care and patient response to treatment. Results: The doctors’ responses suggest that they believe that solutions to medical problems, patient recovery, and coping are related to mind and body stress issues that surgery and drugs may not necessarily cure. The emphasis on self-care for some of these medical problems can put the patient back in control and eliminate the use of excessive drugs in the treatment process. Chances for health and well being of patients are improved if good medical practices are combined with a strong mental and psychological disposition to provide a vital foundation for directly confronting diseases. Conclusion: Spiritual engagement helps to support a psychological outlook that is necessary for fighting diseases and coping adequately with life’s tragedies. This approach provides a well-balanced attack on disease and increases the patient’s chances of coping and surviving.
