Comparative Pertussis Antibody Response of Nigerian Children to Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus (DPT) and Pentavalent Vaccines

Background: In Nigeria Pentavalent vaccine had replaced Diphtheria-Pertussis- Tetanus [DPT] vaccine in the prevention of pertussis since 2012. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the anti-pertussis immunoglobin G (IgG) response of children who received DPT with those who received the pentavalent vaccine. Subjects and Methods: This study was carried out in Akpabuyo LGA of Cross River State from April to June 2016. It was a cross-sectional survey of anti-pertussis IgG levels in children aged 6 months to 5 years who received DPT and those who received pentavalent vaccine. IgG antibody levels were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The protective level was set at >11 DU according to manufacturer’s cut off point. Results: Seventy eight out of 230 children [33.9%] who had received DPT had protective levels of anti-pertussis IgG compared to 74 out of 192 children [38.5%] who had received pentavalent vaccine. The difference was not statistically significant [p = 0.61]. The median IgG antibody level in those who received DPT was 8.0 DU (interquartile range (IQR) 4.0 - 13.0) compared with 9.0 DU (IQR) 4.0 - 15.0 in those who received pentavalent vaccine [p = 0.18]. No single factor investigated predicted the development of protective levels of antibody in the multivariate analysis. Conclusion/Recommendation: There was no difference in the antipertussis antibody response between DPT and pentavalent vaccines recipients. Further study is needed to elucidate factors that could be responsible for low anti-pertussis antibody response in this population.

Trichoderma species collected from Iran

In order to identify Trichoderma species isolated from Iran, Trichoderma selective media and malt extract agar (MEA) were used to isolate Trichoderma species from the soil samples. All the cultures were purified on 2% water agar by hyphal tip method prior to morphological examination. Morphological observations were carried out on the cultures grown on 2% MEA and oat meal agar at 20°C under ambient laboratory conditions. Macroscopic features of colony and microscopic features of conidiophore, phialid and conidium including position of phialids on conidiophore and shape and size of phialids and conidia were studied and recorded 3-5 days after inoculation. Out of 36 tested isolates, using morphological features and molecular data obtained from ITS1, ITS2 and 5.8S regions fourteen species were identified as follow: T. atroviride, T. ghanense, T. spirale, T. erinaceum, T. citrinoviride, T. saturnisporum, T. longibrachiatum, T. hamatum, T. harzianum, T. inhamatum, T. tomentosum, T. virens, T. asperellum, T. koningii. Among the species T. harzianum and T. virens isolates were the most frequent species. In addition of the mentioned species two Tichoderma sp. were collected from walnut rhizospher that they are not fit to any described species so far. Although one of them are T. brevicumpactum introduced informally.

This study investigated the stimulative effect of extracorporeal shock wave therapy(ESWT) on the articular cartilage *** osteo-chondral defect,3 mm in diameter and 3 mm in depth,was drilled in the patellar groove at the distal end of each femur in twenty-four mature New Zealand rabbits. Potential of the Integrated Control of Cucumber Root Rot Using Natural, Biological and Chemical Methods

Over the few last years, cucumber （Cucumis sativus L） root rot disease became common and inflicted marked losses to yield in Fayoum. Isolation trails from infected cucumber roots revealed that Thielaviopsis basicola and Fusarium moniliforme were the main cucumber root rot pathogens. The isolation trials from the rhizosphere of healthy cucumber plants revealed that two fungal isolates and four bacterial isolates had antagonistic effects against cucumber root rot fungi. All the tested biocontrol agents reduced the radial growth of all the tested root rots fungi in dual cultures. However, all culture filtrates of the tested biocontrol agent significantly reduced radial growth of all the tested pathogenic fungi, except that T. harzianum. Under field conditions, soil treatment with any of T. harzianum and B. subtilis BI and BF, significantly reduced percentages of infected plants and significantly increased percentages of survived plants and fruit yield compared with the control. Application of the commercial product Harpin protein （Messenger）~ product, as a resistance inducer at 0.3, 0.5 and l g/L significantly reduced the percentage of infected plants under greenhouse and field conditions. Field experiments indicated that the average percentage of infected plants after 90 days significantly decreased. The percentage of the survived plants as well as fruit yield increased by using integrated disease management （IDM） package, including the most effective treatments： tolerant cultivar, Trichoderma harzianum granules formula as soil treatment, Purging cassia plant extract, Harpin protein, and a half dose of Vitavax/thiram comparing with the treatment recommended by the Ministry of Agricultural or applied treatments individually.

Pleural Effusion in a Dog with Mesothelioma

In this case; mesothelioma was likely diagnosed in 7 years old male mix breed dog which was brought to Veterinary Research and Teaching Hospital of Istanbul University with complaints of general weakness and severe dyspnea. The dog had been misdiagnosed with faryngitis and hernia diaphragmatica before it was brought to our faculty clinic. Apparent abdominal respiration was inspected and supressed heart sounds, abnormal respiratory sounds and pleural rub were detected by auscultation of thorax. Radiographic examination and blood analysis were performed. Chest X-ray examination demonstrates both sided pleural effusion. Leukocytosis （WBC = 36.2 × 10^3μL） was detected on blood count. By thoracocentesis, 40 mL fluid was drained and cytologic examination was performed. Numerous pleomorphic, atypical, multinuclear or multinucleolar mesothelial cells were observed and cytologic findings were pretty compatible with mesothelioma. The dog died before medication and the owner of the dog didn＇t give the confirmation for necropsy. In our clinical case we did not confirm any contact of the dog with asbestos or larger amount of pesticides, which are described as etiological factors of mesothelioma. As mesothelioma is a very rare health condition for dogs, it might be lead up to misdiagnosis.

Energy Intensity and Fitness Cost of Cotton aphid Exposure to Neonicotinoids

Three populations of Aphis gossypii of distinct susceptibility to neonicotinoids show differences in the accumulation and mobilization of energy reserves, what may allow the production of their defensive tools against two neonicotinoid insecticides without impairing their reproductive performance. Bioassays were also carried out for these aphid populations. According to the results obtained, the Ag-R population showed resistant rate significantly higher than the other two populations. Levels of some biochemical characteristics were determined in the resistant, susceptible and semi susceptible populations of cotton aphid. The results obtained in the assays with biochemical parameters indicated significant differences in activity among the populations, with higher activity in using glycogen in the Ag-R population. The inverse activity trends oft （generation time） and DT （doubling time） in both resistant and susceptible populations, one showing fitness disadvantage without insecticide exposure and the other not showing it, may underlay the mitigation of insecticide resistance physiological costs observed in the Ag-R population.

A Lesion-Mimic Syntaxin Double Mutant in Arabidopsis Reveals Novel Complexity of Pathogen Defense Signaling

The lesion-mimic Arabidopsis mutant, syp121 syp122, constitutively expresses the salicylic acid （SA） signaling pathway and has low penetration resistance to powdery mildew fungi. Genetic analyses of the lesion-mimic phenotype have expanded our understanding of programmed cell death （PCD） in plants. Inactivation of SA signaling genes in syp121 syp122 only partially rescues the lesion-mimic phenotype, indicating that additional defenses contribute to the PCD. Whole genome transcriptome analysis confirmed that SA-induced transcripts, as well as numerous other known pathogenresponse transcripts, are up-regulated after inactivation of the syntaxin genes. A suppressor mutant analysis of syp121 syp122 revealed that FMO1, ALD1, and PAD4 are important for lesion development Mutant alleles of EDS1, NDR1, RAR1, and SGTlb also partially rescued the lesion-mimic phenotype, suggesting that mutating syntaxin genes stimulates TIR-NB-LRR and CC-NB-LRR-type resistances. The syntaxin double knockout potentiated a powdery mildew- induced HR-like response. This required functional PAD4 but not functional SA signaling. However, SA signaling potentiated the PAD4-dependent HR-like response. Analyses of quadruple mutants suggest that EDS5 and SID2 confer separate SA-independent signaling functions, and that FMO1 and ALD1 mediate SA-independent signals that are NPRl-dependent. These studies highlight the contribution of multiple pathways to defense and point to the complexity of their interactions.
