Hydraulic model tests for evaluating sediment control function with a grid-type Sabo dam in mountainous torrents

There are two kinds of Sabo dams in order to control sediment transport by debris flow and flash floods in mountainous area,which arc closed and open-type’s *** Japan,open-type’s Sabo dams are constructed taking into account the continuity of sediment routing from upstream to downstream reach in a basin.A plan to construct a 20 m high grid-type Sabo dam which can capture a sediment volume of 400,000 nr is proposed in the Amahata river basin in *** model tests are conducted to decide on the section for a dam(Section A,B) and the grid size such as clearance of vertical/horizontal bars for evaluating the *** runs of flume tests are conducted and the sediment control function of the Sabo dam is discussed using several experimental data such as dimensionlcss sediment runoff rate from Sabo dam,temporal changes of bed profile and mean diameter and so *** was found that sediment deposition in sediment storage area of Sabo dam was affected by curved channel,and that next the grid size of steel bars and thirdly the section of a dam was able to capture sediment in storage area of Sabo *** was controlled well in the section B and in the grid size of l.0×d95,and the problems related to sediment runoff after sediment capturing in Sabo dam are pointed out.

An Inventory of the Above Ground Biomass in the Mau Forest Ecosystem,Kenya

Biomass assessment of the Mau Forest Ecosystem (MFE) was done as part of Kenya’s greenhouse gas inventory. Trans Mara and Mount Londiani forest blocks representing extremes of vegetation types in the MFE were selected for ground data. Based on canopy closure, four forest strata were identified as very dense, moderately dense, open and bamboo. In each stratum, 5 clusters each with 4 plots measuring 30 m × 30 m were located. Big trees (D1.3 ≥ 10 cm) were measured per species for diameter at breast height (D1.3) in the whole plot while height was measured for every 5th tree. Poles (10 cm > D1.3 ≤ 5) were measured for D1.3 in a 10 × 10 m concentric sub plot. Saplings (5 cm > D1.3;ht ≥ 1.5 m) and seedlings (ht < 1.5 m) were enumerated per species within 5 × 5 m and 2 × 2 m concentric sub plots, respectively. Data were recorded in a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) and quality checked with Open Foris Collect software. Allometric equations that have been used for similar vegetation in Kenya were used to relate D1.3 and height with biomass. The tree data were uploaded to ArboWebForest (AWF) cloud-service and using the AWF-SIMO calculation tool, average values of diameter, height, and biomass were calculated for each plot. The data were generalised to cover all areas for each block using the Sparse Bayesian linear regression process on the vegetation characteristics with 10 m resolution ALOS-AVNIR-2 images of the MFE. ANOVA was used to compare biomass generated from several allometric equations. Results show that the average biomass of the MFE was 236 Mg·ha1. Degradation that converts dense forests into open and moderately dense forests contributed to a biomass loss of 228 Mg·ha1 and 194 Mg·ha1 respectively. Four allometric equations gave no significant difference (P < 0.05) in biomass for the 80 plots implying that costly processes of developing new equations may not improve accuracy. Contribution of Ground-Based Cloud Observation to Satellite-Based Cloud Discrimination

One of the biggest factors to deteriorate the satellite product quality is cloud coverage. Therefore, cloud masking process is important to improve the quality of various satellite products. However, satellite-based cloud discrimination algorithm has been developing and efficient ground-based cloud observations are necessary to validate satellite-based cloud discrimination. The purpose of this study is to develop the efficient ground-based cloud observation methodology using whole sky camera. This paper deals with methods how to discriminate cloud portions on whole sky image, how to apply the ground-based cloud observation to the validations for satellite products. For the cloud discrimination on whole sky image, we propose SI （sky index） and BI （brightness index） calculated from RGB （red, green and blue） channels. SI shows the extent of the blueness and gray scale and BI indicates the extent of the brightness. Sun, cloud and blue sky portions are divided by SI and BI threshold. As an application of ground-based cloud observation for the validation of satellite products, clouds portions discriminated from whole sky image are projected onto ground surface with map coordinate. We also examine to compare with cloud portions on whole sky images and MODIS （MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer） image as one of experiments. The proposed ground-based cloud observation method and its extension to satellite-based cloud discrimination should be connected to improve the quality of satellite products.

Climate and seasonal rainfall anomalies along an elevational gradient in the El Sira Mountains,Peru,and their impacts on tree radial growth

The explicit purpose of this study was to characterize climate and vegetation along the western slope of the El Sira Mountains(Peru)and evaluate radial tree growth in response to seasonal rainfall *** May 2011 until September 2015,we monitored radial stem growth of 67 trees using point dendrometers and measured climate within five sites along an altitudinal *** transect extends from lowland terra firme forests,over submontane forests,late and mid successional montane cloud forests up to exposed elfin *** rainfall estimates by the TRMM PR satellite(product 3B42)were highly correlated with our rain gauge observations but underestimate rainfall at high *** intra-annual tree growth patterns could be identified within each elevational forest type,showing species with strictly seasonal growth,continuous growth or alternating growth patterns independent of the *** growth at each site was generally larger during rainy seasons,except for the elfin *** rainy season from October 2013 to March 2014 was extraordinarily dry,with only 73%of long-term mean precipitation received,which resulted in reduced radial growth,again with the exception of the elfin *** indicates that montane tropical rain forests may suffer from prolonged droughts,while exposed ridges with elfin forests still receive plenty of precipitation and benefit from receiving more solar radiation for photosynthesis.
