Correlation between critical thinking and emotional intelligence:a national crosssectional study on operating room nursing students in Iran

Objective:According to the World Federation of Medical Education,critical thinking should be part of the training of medical and paramedical students.Professionals can improve the quality of care of patients after surgery by having or acquiring this skill in health care.Also,Emotional intelligence is introduced as an impor tant and effective factor on the professional performance and mental health of healthcare professionals.Thus,the present study was designed and implemented to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence and critical thinking among operating room nursing students of medical sciences universities in Iran.Methods:This cross-sectional study was done on 420 operating room students in 10 top medical sciences universities of Iran in 2022.The sampling method in this research was multistage sampling.The data collection instruments included demographic characteristics,Rickett's critical thinking,and Bradberry-Greaves'emotional intelligence questionnaires.After receiving the ethics code,data collection was done for 2 months.For data analysis,descriptive and inferential analyses including independent t-tests,analysis of variance,and Pearson correlation were used.The collected data were analyzed by SPSS 18(IBM Corporation,Armonk,New York,United States).P-value<0.05 was considered significant.Results:The mean age of the students participating in this study was 23.02±3.70 years,with women constituting 67.4%of them.The results of data analysis indicated that the mean total score of critical thinking and emotional intelligence was 124.10±37.52 and 114.12±43.63,respectively.A direct significant correlation between critical thinking and emotional intelligence(r=0.459,P-value<0.001)and a significant relationship between gender and emotional intelligence(P-value=0.028)were found.Conclusions:Based on the present study results,educational managers in the Ministry of Health are suggested to consider suitable educational programs for improving critical thinking and emotional intelligence to enhance the qu

Assessment of the knowledge level of radiographers and CT technologists regarding computed tomography parameters in Iran

Objective:To evaluate the knowledge of CT technologists and radiographers concerning CT parameters,in order to keep CT users be aware of all CT parameters and their impact on image quality and patient dose while keeping their knowledge up to date.Methods:This cross-sectional descriptive-analytic study was conducted in Zanjan province,Iran,using a valid and reliable online questionnaire with 53 questions distributed to 153 radiology personnel.Each questionnaire included questions about demographic characteristics and CT parameters,including kVp,mAs,image noise,slice thickness,pitch and automatic tube current modulation(ATCM),and the effects of these parameters on image quality and radiation dose.Results:A response rate of 61.0%(94/153)was achieved.This study enrolled 30 radiographers and 64 CT technologists.There was no significant difference in the mean scores of the two groups(52.169.90 vs.56.0912.00,t=1.545,P=0.126).CT personnel had the highest and lowest knowledge scores in image reconstruction(t=28.33,P=0.001)and mAs(t=4.27,P=0.590),respectively,whereas radiographers had the highest and lowest knowledge scores in the fields of image noise(t=9.85,P=0.015)and kVp(t=12.73,P=0.007),respectively.Conclusions:The total knowledge scores of CT technologists and radiographers for various scan parameters affecting image quality and dose were insufficient.Thus,it is recommended that regular retraining courses be held to enhance and update technologists’knowledge.

Syringic acid induces cancer cell death in the presence of Cu(Ⅱ)ions via pro-oxidant activity

Objective:To investigate the effects of syringic acid on HEK 293 and HepG2 cells in the absence and presence of exogenous Cu(Ⅱ)and Fe(Ⅱ)ions.Methods:The antiproliferative effects of syringic acid on HEK 293 and HepG2 cells in the absence and presence of exogenous Cu(Ⅱ)and Fe(Ⅱ)ions were examined by MTT assay.Additionally,colony-forming,reactive oxidative species(ROS)generation,apoptosis induction,autophagy,mitochondrial membrane potential,and mitochondrial mass were investigated.Results:At 24 and 72 h,no significant differences were observed in the viability of HepG2 cells between the control and syringic acid+Fe(Ⅱ)groups.However,exposure of HepG2 cells to syringic acid+Cu(Ⅱ)for 72 h reduced the cell viability significantly.Furthermore,ROS formation,induction of apoptosis,and autophagic vacuoles were significantly increased in HepG2 cells without marked changes in mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial mass.Moreover,syringic acid+Cu(Ⅱ)reduced the plating efficiency and surviving fraction significantly.Conclusions:The combination of syringic acid with Cu(Ⅱ)was toxic to cancer cells and showed pro-oxidant activity.In addition,this combination induced autophagy in cancer cells with less cytotoxic effects on normal cells,which is a potential candidate for the development of novel therapeutics towards cancer.

Prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis and other intestinal parasitic infections among mentally retarded residents in central institution of southern Iran

Objective:To determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections among mentally retarded residents of rehabilitation center of Bandar Abbas,Hormozgan province,southern Iran.Methods:A cross-sectional study was carried out in central rehabilitation institute of Hormozgan province in summer 2010.Fecal samples of all 133 residents(72 males,61 females)aged 3-52,were collected in triplicate.Specimens were examined by direct smear,formalin-ether concentration techniques and stained by permanent Trichrome,Ziehl-Neelsen stains.Statistical analysis was conducted by SPSS 13.5.Results:Intestinal parasitic infections were seen in 48.5%(64 out of 133 subjects:53.4%in males and 46.6%in females).Strongyloides stercoralis with17.3%showed the highest incidence followed by Entamoeba coli(9.8%),Blastocystis hominis(7.5%),Giardia lamblia(2.3%),Endolimax nana(2.3%),Hymenolepis nana(0.8%),Oxyuris vermicularis(0.8%),and Chilomasix mesnili(0.8%).Double infections were found to be as:Strongyloides stercoralis+Giardia lamblia(2.3%),Entamoeba coli+Giardia lamblia(1.5%),Entamoeba coli+Blastocystis hominis(1.5%),Oxyuris vermicularis+Entamoeba coli(0.8%),Strongyloides stercoralis+Entamoeba coli(0.8%),respectively.Conclusions:Our findings reveal that strongyloidiasis is a common disease among mentally retarded population in southern Iran.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in human lymphomas

Lymphomas are a diverse group of haematologic malignancies, which occur in infection-fighting cells of the lymphatic system. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are non-coding RNAs, which have recently received significant attention as the main mediators of gene expression. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on lncRNAs involved in lymphomas, their molecular functions, as well as their potential clinical value. Relevant literature was identified by a PubMed search of English language papers using the following terms: Lymphoma, LncRNA, leukemia, proliferation, apoptosis, and prognosis. LncRNAs are imperative for lymphoma carcinogenesis through affecting apoptosis, cell proliferation, invasion, and response to chemotherapy. The expression level of lncRNAs can affect chemotherapy-induced apoptosis. Taken together, lncRNA dysregulation in lymphoma cells is not only an epiphenomenon but also lncRNA transcription is critically related to the initiation and progression of lymphomas. Aberrant expression of lncRNAs can lead to the transformation of normal lymphocytes into lymphoma cells.

Assessment of the anterior chamber parameters after laser iridotomy in primary angle close suspect using Pentacam and gonioscopy

AIM:To evaluate the changes in the anterior segment parameters of the subjects with primary angle closure suspect(PACS) before and after laser iridotomy(LI) using the Pentacam and gonioscopy. METHODS:Forty-eight eyes of 48 PACS were included.Anterior chamber angle(ACA),central anterior chamber depth(ACD),anterior chamber volume(ACV) and central corneal thickness(CCT) were recorded from the Pentacam before and one month after LI.ACA was graded according to Shaffer classification using Goldmann gonioscopy.RESULTS:ACA increased significantly from 25.59±4.41 to 26.46±4.33 degrees(P=0.009) and ACV changed from 85.97±16.07mm3to 99.25±15.83mm3(P=0.000).The changes in ACD,CCT and intraocular pressure were non-significant(P>0.05).Gonioscopy showed significant widening of the Shaffer angle in 4 quadrants(P<0.001).CONCLUSION:Pentacam can serve as the objective instrument in assessing the efficacy of LI.

AIM:To determine the distribution and associated factors of intraocular pressure(IOP) in an Iranian elderly population 60 years of age and above.METHODS:The present report is part of the Tehran Geriatric Eye study(TGES),a population-based cross-sectional study that was conducted on the residents of Tehran 60 years of age and above.The sampling was performed using multistage stratified random cluster sampling methods from 22 districts of Tehran,Iran.Demographic and history information,blood samples,and blood pressure were collected from all participants.Ocular examinations included measurement of uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity,objective and subjective refraction,and slit-lamp biomicroscopy.The IOP was measured using Goldmann applanation tonometry(GAT).Corneal imaging and ocular biometry were performed using Pentacam AXL.RESULTS:The data of 3892 eyes of 2124 individuals were analyzed for this report.The mean age of the study participants was 66.49±5.31y(range:60 to 95y).The mean IOP was 15.2 mm Hg(95%CI:15.1 to 15.4),15.3 mm Hg(95%CI:15.1 to 15.5) and 15.1 mm Hg(95%CI:15.0 to 15.3) in all participants,males,and females,respectively.Of the study participants,1.3% had an IOP of ≥20 mm Hg.The mean IOP increased from 15.1 mm Hg in the age group 60-64y to 16.3 mm Hg in the age group ≥80y.According to the final multiple GEE model,the IOP was statistically significantly higher in men than in women.All the studied age groups,except for the 75-79-year-old age group,had significantly higher IOP compared to the 60-64-year-old age group.The IOP was significantly higher in underweight compared to other body mass index groups.Moreover,the IOP had a statistically significant direct relationship with the mean corneal power(mean CP),central corneal thickness(CCT),and systolic blood pressure.CONCLUSION:The present study presents the distribution of IOP in an Iranian elderly population.A higher IOP(within the range 14 to 17 mm Hg) is significantly associated with older age,male sex,high systolic blood pressure,increased

Ethnobotanical and Indigenous Knowledge of Important Plants in East Hararghe, Eastern Ethiopia

An ethnobotanical study was conducted in East Hararghe, Ethiopia to identify and investigate the use of various plants by the traditional healers and communities engaged in domestic, pesticide and medicinal use. A total of 78 species were observed to be used by the local inhabitants in the region for the treatments of various ailments. Out of these, herbs constitute 49% followed by trees(36%) and shrubs only 15%. However, most frequently used plant parts were leaf and aerial parts(20) followed by seed(13), fruit(12), other parts(10), rhizome(7) and bark(1). Most of the plants were found to be used for medicinal, aromatic and food flavouring(spices, condiments) purposes. Out of 78 species recorded in the present study, 11 were reported to cure stomachache, seven for cold, cough and respiratory problem, six for diarrhoea and five species were found capable of curing fever. Fabaceae was the largest family contributing to medicinal plant use with seven species followed by Solanaceae, Myrtaceae,(5 spp.), and Zingiberaceae, Asteraceae, Liliaceae(4 spp. each). Some of the important plants utilized for taking care of variety of ailments are Azadirachta indica, Brassica nigra, Balanites aegyptiaca, Maytenus ovatus, Rosmarinus officinalis and Trigonella foenum graecum. Most of these medicinal and aromatic plants(MAPs) play a significant role in the household economy and were observed to be very popular among the people. Unpopular plants were left out of the study. This study provides useful and basic information on usage of different plants for conducting further studies aimed at conservation and documentation of traditional medicine system and economic welfare of rural peoples of the East Hararghe, Ethiopia. It also revealed that indigenous practices contributed to sustainable management of plants.
