Epstein-Barr virus-associated gastric carcinoma: Evidence of age-dependence among a Mexican population

AIM： To investigate features of Epstein-Barr virus （EBV）associated gastric carcinoma （EBVaGC） among a Mexican population. METHODS： Cases of primary gastric adenocarcinoma were retrieved from the files of the Departments of Pathology at the Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia and the Instituto Nacional de la Nutrición in mexico City. The anatomic site of the gastric neoplasia was identified, and carcinomas were histologically classified as intestinal and diffuse types and subclassified as proposed by the Japanese Research Society for Gastric Cancer. EBV-encoded small non-polyadenylated RNA-1 （EBER-1） in situ hybridization was conducted to determine the presence of EBV in neoplastic cells. RESULTS： We studied 330 consecutive, non-selected, primary gastric carcinomas. Among these, there were 173 male and 157 female patients （male/female ratio 1.1/1）. EBER-1 was detected in 24 （7.3%） cases （male/ female ratio： 1.2/1）. The mean age for the entire group was 58.1 years （range： 20-88 years）, whereas the mean age for patients harboring EBER-1-positive gastric carcinomas was 65.3 years （range： 50-84 years）. Age and histological type showed statistically significant differences, when EBER-1-positive and -negative gastric carcinomas were compared. EBER-1 was detected in hyperplastic- and dysplastic-gastric mucosa surrounding two EBER-1-negative carcinomas, respectively. CONCLUSION： Among Latin-American countries, mexico has the lowest frequency of EBVaGC. Indeed, the Mexican population 〉50 years of age was selectively affected. Ethnic variations are responsible for the epidemiologic behavior of EBVaGC among the worldwide population.

Polyurethane as substrate for fungal strains

Polyurethane is a versatile plastic with several industrial applications in the modern life, but it is considered as a very recalcitrant material. Biodegradation of this plastic has been poorly explored, and most of the studies that have been published focus on bacterial enzymes. In this work, some fungi with the capacity of growing with polyurethane foam as nutrient source were isolated from sands contaminated with this plastic and from DIA/UAdeC collection, testing their ability to grow on polyurethane as sole carbon and nitrogen sources and their enzymatic activities were determined in specific media as well as their invasion capacity on polyurethane agar plates. 22 fungal strains demonstrated their capacity of growing on polyurethane. Among the enzymatic activities evaluate, the most common was the urease activity (95% of the strains).Protease, esterase and laccase activities were present in 86%, 50% and 36% respectively. The great ability of the isolated fungal strains to use polyurethane foam as nutrient opens an important opportunity to study at detail the biodegradation of this plastic, with clear implications in cell biology and environmental technology.

Improving Traffic Conditions by Using Neural Networks

The paper promotes the implementation of a neural network approach to improve one of the most transcendent traffic conditions: the mobility of the cars in any particular junction. Neural networks have proven to be an effective paradigm of modern computing, providing extensive benefits in a wide range of applications. In this sense, the paper uses a BPNN (backpropagation neural network) model. The three input nodes are related to: n1: the amount of cars in the road; n2: the green light interval; and n3:the distance (taking into account the quantity of cars) between the first car in the intersection and the last car in the longest line in front of it. In particular, the paper promotes that each traffic light signal will be capable of offering a new green light interval according to the requirement and constrains of the vitality, ensuring a vehicular mobility level greater than 65%. To assess this idea, the paper presents two experiments confronting the real world data versus experimental results. For example, in the first experiment, the BPNN improves the performance of the real data about vehicular mobility in almost 30%. Finally, some conclusions and future work are presented.

Linking Numerical Water Quality Models in an Environmental Information System for Integrated Environmental Assessments

Decision makers involved in prevention of water contamination often lack the technical knowledge of water quality evaluation or the comprehension of complex software for environmental information management required to make effective decisions. Providing information about the environment is not an easy task due to its complex structure, relationships, and dynamic processes. Because environmental models play an important role in environmental decision support systems, the integration of models into user-friendly integrated information systems is a key factor in the support of such users. This paper presents an environmental information system which supports water protection of Coatzacoalcos River in mexico, having as a main building block water quality assessments supported by mathematical modeling through the two-dimensional Saint Venant and Advection-Diffusion-Reaction equations to calculate the river hydrodynamics and the contaminant transport, respectively. The mathematical modeling solution yields appropriate results representing the river contaminant distribution when compared with field measurements. But the direct use of these models by decision makers is difficult at best, meaning they are not likely to be used in making practical decisions. The system described in this paper integrates these models, and several other tools, into a seamless, user-centered application, improving model usability, initial configuration, and results visualization.

Spectrum and visual outcomes of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease in Argentina

AIM： To review all cases of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada （VKH） disease in an Inflammatory Eye Disease Service in Argentina and to describe the clinical profile and outcomes of ***： The records from patients with VKH disease between January 1980 and December 2008 were retrospectively analyzed for clinical profile, complications, and treatment. Patients were classified according to their initial treatment in group 1： high corticosteroid dose [≥1 mg/（kg·d）] within 2wk of illness onset; group 2： high corticosteroid dose, 2 to 4wk of onset and group 3： patients who received the high dose after 1mo of illness onset, patients who received lower oral doses than 1 mg/（kg·d） without regarding the time of beginning of the ***： A total of 210 eyes of 105 patients were included. The mean age at presentation was 32.6±13y （range： 10-74y）, and 86.7% were female. The mean duration of follow up was 144±96.6mo. Patients in the group 1 had significantly higher visual acuity than the other groups （P〈0.0001）, none had （loss of, or no） light perception at the end of follow up, whereas 24.7% patients in group 3 ended in light perception （P〈0.004）.CONCLUSION： Patients with early high dose corticosteroid treatment have better visual acuity and fewer complications. Proper timing in referral and treatment is critical for better visual outcome in VKH disease.

Objective:To investigate the vasorelaxant effect of organic extracts from Apium graveolens(***)which is a part of a group of plants subjected to pharmacological and phytochemical study with the purpose of offering it as an ideal source for obtaining lead compounds for designing new therapeutic agents with potential vasorelaxant and antihypertensive ***:An ex vivo method was employed to assess the vasorelaxant *** consisted of using rat aortic rings with and without endothelium precontracted with ***:All extracts caused concentration-dependent relaxation in precontracted aortic rings with and without endothelium;the most active extracts were Dichloromethane and Ethyl Acetate extracts from *** results suggested that secondary metabolites responsible for the vasorelaxant activity belong to a group of compounds of medium ***,our evidence showed that effect induced by dichloromethane and ethyl acetate extracts from *** is mediated probably by calcium ***:*** represents an ideal source for obtaining lead compounds for designing new therapeutic agents with potential vasorelaxant and antihypertensive effects.

A plant-pollinator system： How learning versus cost-benefit can induce periodic oscillations

In this paper, we propose a model describing the interaction between two species： a plant population that gets pollinated by an insect population. We assume the plant population is divided into two groups： the first group in mutualistic relationship with the insect and the second group attracting the insects while deceiving them and not delivering any reward. In addition, we assume that the insect population reduces the number of visits to the plants after several unsuccessful visits. We are interested in the conditions for the coexistence of both species, especially in the appearance of damped or sustained oscillations. We focus the analysis on the parameters that measure the balance among deceit, the benefit that the insect gets from the plant, and the learning by the pollinators. We are especially interested in analyzing the effect of learning by the insect population due to unsuccessfully visiting the deceiving plants.

BACKGROUND The definition of metabolic-dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)allows identification of metabolically complicated *** risk scores are related to cardiovascular risk(CVR)scores and could be useful for the identification of patients at risk of systemic *** To evaluate the relationship between MAFLD and CVR using the Framingham risk score in a group of Mexican *** Cross-sectional,observational and descriptive study carried out in a cohort of 585 volunteers in the state of Veracruz with MAFLD *** risk of liver fibrosis was calculated with aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index,nonalcoholic fatty liver disease score and fibrosis-4,as well as with transient hepatic elastography with Fibroscan~?.The CVR was determined by the Framingham *** One hundred and twenty-five participants(21.4%)with MAFLD criteria were evaluated,average age 54.4 years,63.2%were women,body mass index 32.3 kg/m~*** Framingham CVR was high in 43 patients(33.9%).Transient elastography was performed in 55.2%of volunteers;39.1%with high CVR and predominance in advanced fibrosis(F3–F4).The logistic regression analysis showed that liver fibrosis,diabetes and hypertension independently increased *** One of every three patients with MAFLD had a high CVR,and in those with high fibrosis risk,the CVR risk was even greater.

Celecoxib enhances the detoxification of diethylnitrosamine in rat liver cancer

AIM： To study the effect of celecoxib （CXB） on diethylnitrosamine activation through the regulation of cytochrome P450 in a hepatocarcinogenesis ***： Six-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups, a non-treated group （NT）, a diethylnitrosamine-treated group （DEN）, a DEN＋CXB-treated group （DEN＋CXB）,and CXB 8 d-treated and CXB 32 d-treated groups. The effects of celecoxib on the enzymatic activities of CYP1A1, 2A, 2B1/2, and 2E1 were assessed in hepatic microsomes 24 h after DEN *** in CYPIA1 and CYP2B1/2 protein expression were also evaluated. The rate of DEN metabolism was measured by the production of the deethylation metabolite acetaldehyde, and the denitrosation metabolite ***： DEN＋CXB administration produced a significant increase in the enzymatic activities ofCYP2B1/2 and 1A1, whereas it did not change the activities of CYP2A and 2E1, compared to that of the DEN group. CXB treatment for eight days did not produce a significant effect on enzymatic activity when compared to the NT group; however, when it was administered for prolonged times （CXB 32 d group）,the enzymatic activities were increased in a similar pattern to those in the DEN＋CXB group. The observed increase in the enzymatic activities in the DEN＋CXB group was accompanied by an increase in the CYP2B1/2 protein levels; no changes were observed in the levels of CYPIA1. In vitro, CXB increased the denitrosation of DEN, a pathway of metabolic detoxification. The addition of SKF-525A, a preferential inhibitor of CYP2B, abrogated the denitrosation of ***： These results suggest that the mechanism of action of CXB involves enhancement of the detoxification of DEN by an increasing denitrosation via CYP2B1/2.
