A Eulerian population balance/Monte Carlo approach for simulating laminar aluminum dust flames

Recently,metal powders have been conceptualized as carbon-free recyclable energy carriers that may form a cornerstone of a sustainable energy *** combustion of metal dusts in oxidizing atmospheres is exothermal and yields oxide particles that could,potentially,be retrieved and,subsequently,recharged by conversion to pure metals using green primary energy *** a step towards a predictive tool for designing metal dust combustors,we present a fully Eulerian modelling approach for laminar particle-laden reactive flows that is,conceptually,based on a population balance description of the dispersed particles and relies on a stochastic Eulerian solution *** the population balance equation(PBE)is formulated for the number-weighted distribution of characteristic properties among all particles near a spatial location,it is kinetically informed by the rates at which mass,momentum and heat are exchanged between the carrier gas and the particulate phase on the single particle *** the scope of the Eulerian Monte Carlo solution scheme,the property distribution is discretely represented in terms of the total number density and a finite number of property samples and the computational work is channelled towards the Eulerian estimation of mean particle *** the case of reactive aluminum particles,we combine a kinetic description of the gas-particle heat and mass transfer with a transport-limited continuum formulation to obtain rate expressions that are valid across the entire particle size range from the free molecular through the continuum *** velocity,the particle properties include only the particle mass,temperature and oxide mass *** set of thermochemical degrees of freedom is retained also as phase transitions due to melting occur,drawing on a smooth blend of the solid and liquid thermodynamic and material *** particle-level formulation encompasses aluminum evaporation,surface oxidation,scavenging of oxi

Dutch housing associations are dealing with a growing number of tenants who are ageing in ***,there is a lack of suitable housing that meets the(social)needs of this target *** housing,which offers a socio-spatial context that facilitates encounters between residents,is considered a promising housing concept to(partly)fill this ***,clustered housing is a broad concept consisting of a variety of housing types that differ from each other in the extent to which people“live together”.Still little is known about which types of clustered housing can be distinguished in relation to the potential for social ***,in this article we distinguish between types of clustered housing based on social,organizational,and spatial building *** have mapped these characteristics by combining real estate data of housing association Woonzorg Nederland with survey data collected among their building *** on this dataset,an explorative cluster analysis was performed,resulting in four types of clustered ***,further exploration of the data shows that,from the perspective of building managers,residents of certain types of clustered housing interact more often and feel more connected with each other than residents of non-clustered housing types.

Transfer learning from synthetic data for open-circuit voltage curve reconstruction and state of health estimation of lithium-ion batteries from partial charging segments

Data-driven models for battery state estimation require extensive experimental training data,which may not be available or suitable for specific tasks like open-circuit voltage(OCV)reconstruction and subsequent state of health(SOH)*** study addresses this issue by developing a transfer-learning-based OCV reconstruction model using a temporal convolutional long short-term memory(TCN-LSTM)network trained on synthetic data from an automotive nickel cobalt aluminium oxide(NCA)cell generated through a mechanistic model *** data consists of voltage curves at constant temperature,C-rates between C/30 to 1C,and a SOH-range from 70%to 100%.The model is refined via Bayesian optimization and then applied to four use cases with reduced experimental nickel manganese cobalt oxide(NMC)cell training data for higher use *** TL models’performances are compared with models trained solely on experimental data,focusing on different C-rates and voltage *** results demonstrate that the OCV reconstruction mean absolute error(MAE)within the average battery electric vehicle(BEV)home charging window(30%to 85%state of charge(SOC))is less than 22 mV for the first three use cases across all *** SOH estimated from the reconstructed OCV exhibits an mean absolute percentage error(MAPE)below 2.2%for these *** study further investigates the impact of the source domain on TL by incorporating two additional synthetic datasets,a lithium iron phosphate(LFP)cell and an entirely artificial,non-existing,cell,showing that solely the shifting and scaling of gradient changes in the charging curve suffice to transfer knowledge,even between different cell chemistries.A key limitation with respect to extrapolation capability is identified and evidenced in our fourth use case,where the absence of such comprehensive data hindered the TL process.

We consider group CONTROL BY ADDING INDIVIDUALS(GCAI)in the setting of group identification for two procedural rules-the consensus-start-respecting rule and the liberal-start-respecting *** is known that GCAI for both rules are NP-hard,but whether they are fixed-parameter tractable with respect to the number of distinguished individuals remained *** resolve both open problems in the *** addition,we strengthen the NP-hardness of GCAI by showing that,with respect to the natural parameter the number of added individuals,GCAI for both rules are W[2]-***,the W[2]-hardness for the liberal-startrespecting rule holds even when restricted to a very special case where the qualifications of individuals satisfy the so-called consecutive ones ***,for the consensus-startrespecting rule,the problem becomes polynomial-time solvable in this special *** also study a dual restriction where the disqualifications of individuals fulfill the consecutive ones property,and show that under this restriction GCAI for both rules turn out to be polynomial-time *** reductions for showing W[2]-hardness also imply several algorithmic lowerbounds.

Audio Enhancement for Computer Audition—An Iterative Training Paradigm Using Sample Importance

Neural network models for audio tasks,such as automatic speech recognition(ASR)and acoustic scene classification(ASC),are susceptible to noise contamination for real-life *** improve audio quality,an enhancement module,which can be developed independently,is explicitly used at the front-end of the target audio *** this paper,we present an end-to-end learning solution to jointly optimise the models for audio enhancement(AE)and the subsequent *** guide the optimisation of the AE module towards a target application,and especially to overcome difficult samples,we make use of the sample-wise performance measure as an indication of sample *** experiments,we consider four representative applications to evaluate our training paradigm,i.e.,ASR,speech command recognition(SCR),speech emotion recognition(SER),and *** applications are associated with speech and nonspeech tasks concerning semantic and non-semantic features,transient and global information,and the experimental results indicate that our proposed approach can considerably boost the noise robustness of the models,especially at low signal-to-noise ratios,for a wide range of computer audition tasks in everyday-life noisy environments.

Exploring factors of disaster preparedness in UNESCO-designated heritage sites

Increased hazards threatening the United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO)-designated sites and endangering cultural heritage and community well-being require attention and ***-sidering the pivotal role of UNESCO sites in conservation and development,this study assessed their levels of disaster *** absence of studies assessing disaster awareness,risk perception,and preparedness among UNESCO site actors,as well as the pivotal place of preparedness within the Disaster Risk Management(DRM)cycle justifies this *** the tenets of the Person-Relative-to-Event framework,we hypothe-sized that a strong positive correlation exists between perceived risks,resources,and disaster *** collect pertinent data,we employed an embedded mixed-method design and conducted an online questionnaire survey yielding 141 responses from 59 *** the results of relevant analyses,wildfires,floods,and droughts are top hazards occurring frequently in UNESCO sites,with significant concerns about pollution and habitat loss during future *** emerged as the most available crucial DRM resource,with higher availability of DRM resources correlating positively and significantly with sites’*** findings con-tribute valuable insights to address missing links for disaster-ready and resilient UNESCO sites,promoting their preservation for future generations.

Describing the orientation state of the particles is often critical in fibre suspension *** descriptors,the so-called second-order orientation tensor(or moment)leading the way,are often preferred due to their low computational *** problems however arise when evolution equations for the moments are derived from the orientation distribution functions and the impact of the chosen closure is often *** this work,our aim is to provide macroscopic simulations of orientation that are cheap,accurate and *** this end,we propose an innovative data-based approach to the upscaling of orientation kinematics in the context of fibre *** the physics at the microscopic scale can be modelled reasonably enough,the idea is to conduct accurate offline direct numerical simulations at that scale and to extract the corresponding macroscopic descriptors in order to build a database of *** the online stage,the macroscopic descriptors can then be updated quickly by combining adequately the items from the database instead of relying on an imprecise macroscopic *** methodology is presented in the well-known case of dilute fibre suspensions(where it can be compared against closure-based macroscopic models)and in the case of suspensions of confined or electrically-charged fibres,for which state-of-the-art closures proved to be inadequate or simply do not exist.

Recent advances and perspectives of zinc metal-free anodes for zinc ion batteries

Zinc-ion batteries(ZIBs) are recognized as potential energy storage devices due to their advantages of low cost, high energy density, and environmental friendliness. However, zinc anodes are subject to unavoidable zinc dendrites, passivation, corrosion, and hydrogen evolution reactions during the charging and discharging of batteries, becoming obstacles to the practical application of ZIBs. Appropriate zinc metal-free anodes provide a higher working potential than metallic zinc anodes, effectively solving the problems of zinc dendrites, hydrogen evolution, and side reactions during the operation of metallic zinc anodes. The improvement in the safety and cycle life of batteries creates conditions for further commercialization of ZIBs. Therefore, this work systematically introduces the research progress of zinc metal-free anodes in “rocking chair” ZIBs. Zinc metal-free anodes are mainly discussed in four categories: transition metal oxides,transition metal sulfides, MXene(two dimensional transition metal carbide) composites, and organic compounds, with discussions on their properties and zinc storage mechanisms. Finally, the outlook for the development of zinc metal-free anodes is proposed. This paper is expected to provide a reference for the further promotion of commercial rechargeable ZIBs.

With the events of Spring 2011, the concern of the public and the industry for the safety of nuclear installations has jumped asking the industry to provide indubitable proofs of the safety. One of main issues encountered in the Spring 2011 accident was related to the spent fuel in the cooling pools. While the issue of maintaining the cold source available for insuring an appropriate cooling is being addressed in the scope of stress tests, a specific issue related to spent fuel storage on-site to be addressed is the behavior under seismic loads of high-density storage racks being deployed to answer the lack of interim storage availabilities off-site. The paper focuses on the seismic qualification of high-density storage racks immersed in cooling pools describing the method and its application to one actual case.
