Plastic mulches have become an essential component of modern agriculture since their introduction in the ***,disposal of plastic mulches poses serious environmental challenges as plastics that are not considered biodegradable or compostable can take several hundred years to *** year in the United States,only 9%of overall plastic waste is recycled while 79%is accumulated in landfills or the natural *** of plastic mulch is especially constrained due to the contamination that results from their use in ***,recovered mulches are reported to have 30%–80%surface contamination,primarily from soil and plant *** mulch waste is concentrated in areas where they are used and can provide logistical opportunities to the plastic recycling *** recycling includes mechanical,advanced(chemical and thermal),and biological methods,that may all be used for polyethylene(PE).Most plastic is recycled using the mechanical method,while advanced and biological methods are promising but face significant financial and technical *** all recycling methods,strategies are needed for managing surface contamination to realize the recycling potential of plastic mulch.

High rate production of concentrated sulfides from metal bearing wastewater in an expanded bed hydrogenotrophic sulfate reducing bioreactor

Metallurgical wastewaters contain high concentrations of sulfate,up to 15 g L^(-1).Sulfate-reducing bioreactors are employed to treat these wastewaters,reducing sulfates to sulfides which subsequently coprecipitate *** loading and reduction rates are typically restricted by the total H2S *** stripping,sulfide precipitation and dilution are the main strategies employed to minimize inhibition by H2S,but can be adversely compromised by suboptimal sulfate reduction,clogging and additional energy ***,metallurgical wastewater was treated for over 250 days using two hydrogenotrophic granular activated carbon expanded bed bioreactors without additional removal of sulfides.H2S toxicity was minimized by operating at pH 8±0.15,resulting in an average sulfate removal of 7.08±0.08 g L^(-1),sulfide concentrations of 2.1±0.2 g L^(-1) and peaks up to 2.3±0.2 g L^(-1).A sulfate reduction rate of 20.6±0.9 g L^(-1)d^(-1) was achieved,with maxima up to 27.2 g L^(-1)d^(-1),which is among the highest reported considering a literature review of 39 *** rates reported here are 6e8 times higher than those reported for other reactors without active sulfide removal and the only reported for expanded bed sulfate-reducing bioreactors using *** increasing the influent sulfate concentration and maintaining high sulfide concentrations,sulfate reducers were promoted while fermenters and methanogens were *** wastewater containing 4.4 g L^(-1) sulfate,0.036 g L^(-1) nitrate and various metals(As,Fe,Tl,Zn,Ni,Sb,Co and Cd)was successfully treated with all metal(loid)s,nitrates and sulfates removed below discharge limits.

Biopolymers play a critical role as scaffolds used in tendon and ligament(TL)*** advanced biopolymer materials have been proposed with optimised mechanical properties,biocompatibility,degradation,and processability,it is still challenging to find the right balance between these ***,we aim to develop novel hybrid biocomposites based on poly(p-dioxanone)(pdo),poly(lactide-co-caprolactone)(LCL)and silk to produce high-performance grafts suitable for TL tissue *** containing 1-15%of silk were studied through a range of characterisation *** then explored biocompatibility through in vitro and in vivo studies using a mouse *** found that adding up to 5%silk increases the tensile properties,degradation rate and miscibility between pdo and LCL phases without agglomeration of silk inside the ***,addition of silk increases surface roughness and *** vitro experiments show that the silk improved attachment of tendon-derived stem cells and proliferation over 72 h,while in vivo studies indicate that the silk can reduce the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines after six weeks of ***,we selected a promising biocomposite and created a prototype TL graft based on extruded *** found that the tensile properties of both individual fibres and braided grafts could be suitable for anterior cruciate ligament(ACL)repair applications.
