The efficacy of electroacupuncture in the treatment of peripheral facial paralysis is known, but the specific mechanism has not been clarified. Glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor(GDNF) has been shown to protect neurons by binding to N-cadherin. Our previous results have shown that electroacupuncture could increase the expression of N-cadherin mRNA in facial neurons and promote facial nerve regeneration. In this study, the potential mechanisms by which electroacupuncture promotes nerve regeneration were elucidated through assessing the effects of electroacupuncture on GDNF and N-cadherin expression in facial motoneurons of rabbits with peripheral facial nerve crush injury. New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into a normal group(normal control, n = 21), injury group(n = 45) and electroacupuncture group(n = 45). Model rabbits underwent facial nerve crush injury only. Rabbits in the electroacupuncture group received facial nerve injury, and then underwent electroacupuncture at Yifeng(TE17), Jiache(ST6), Sibai(ST2), Dicang(ST4), Yangbai(GB14), Quanliao(SI18), and Hegu(LI4; only acupuncture, no electrical stimulation). The results showed that in behavioral assessments, the total scores of blink reflex, vibrissae movement, and position of apex nasi, were markedly lower in the EA group than those in the injury group. Hematoxylin-eosin staining of the right buccinator muscle of each group showed that the cross-sectional area of buccinator was larger in the electroacupuncture group than in the injury group on days 1, 14 and 21 post-surgery. Toluidine blue staining of the right facial nerve tissue of each group revealed that on day 14 post-surgery, there was less axonal demyelination and fewer inflammatory cells in the electroacupuncture group compared with the injury group. Chordoma as a rare malignant tumor arising from remnants of the notochord, accounts for 4% of malignant bone tumors. It occurs twice as frequently in men compared with women and is uncommon in individuals less than 40 years of age.1-3 Topographic distribution is spheno-occipital (35% to 44%), vertebral (15%), and sacrococcygeal (42% to 50%).4 Unusual locations include the mandible and the maxilla, and lesions in these locations have been called ectopic or dental chordomas. Some chordomas with nasal and paranasal presentations have been reported, but primary chordoma of the nose occurs rarely. To our knowlege only two cases have been reported so far according to the literature.4,5 In this paper, we present primary chordoma of the nose, its characteristics and our experiences with it.

Objective:To report a surgical method for the treatment of pre-auricular fistula to lower post-operative recurrence rate. Methods:Clinical data of 187 patients with pre-auricular fistula who underwent en bloc resection at the Affiliated Hospital of Luzhou Medical College from August 2006 to November 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Factors that might affect the prognosis following En bloc fistula resection bordered by the superficial temporalis fascia, helix perichondrium and auriculocephalic sulcus were investigated. Results: Of the 187 patients, 181 achieved primary healing and 6 ended up with delayed healing. During the follow-up period (one to seven years), there were 4 cases of recurrence (2.1%). Conclusions:Clear demarcation of surgical resection can facilitate easy and thorough resection of preauricular fistula and lead to low recurrence rate. Proper timing and careful search for potential fistula branches are the two crucial factors affecting prognosis. BACKGROUND： As a member of the LIM protein family Ⅱ, cysteine- and glycine-rich protein-2 （CRP2） has been demonstrated to play a role in the regulation of growth and differentiation of eukaryotic cells. Our previous study has demonstrated that CRP2 can be detected in the embryonic rat inner ear but not in the adult rat inner ear. However, at present, the expression of LIM protein family H members in stem or precursor cells has not been described. OBJECTIVE： To determine the expression and sub-cellular localization of CRP2 in olfactory stem cells. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： An experiment with repeated measures was performed in the Laboratory of otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery, Xijing Hospital, the Fourth Military Medical University from February 2008 to April 2008. MATERIALS： Olfactory stem cells, and rabbit-anti-CRP2 polyclonal antibody were prepared and kept in our laboratory. METHODS： Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis were used to detect expression of CRP2 in olfactory stem cells. Immunocytochemistry was also used to localize CRP2 in olfactory stem cells. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： The expression and sub-cellular localization of CRP2 in rat olfactory stem cells. RESULTS： CRP2 expression was found in olfactory stem cells, and CRP2 was distributed in both the nucleus and the cytoplasm. CONCLUSION： Confirmation of the expression and distribution of CRP2 in olfactory stem cells.

Objectives: The anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap is often considered the workhorse in soft tissue reconstruction of head and neck defects secondary to trauma, infection, or tumor resection. Despite its many advantages, ALT flaps have been criticized due to variability in vasculature, which may result in inadequate or non-existent perforators. This retrospective study aims to investigate the utility and validity of positron emission tomography (PET) scan to identify the location and characteristics of perforators to the ALT flap. Methods: We performed a 10-year retrospective review of ALT flaps at our institution to identify patients with preoperative PET scans available for analysis. Three reviewers (attending physician, fellow, and resident) were asked to identify the number, location, and characteristics (myocutaneous versus septocutaneous) of ALT perforators on imaging, and reviewer agreement was assessed. Results were then compared to available operative data. Results: One hundred twenty-one patients were identified who underwent ALT free flap surgery. Thirty-eight preoperative PET scans were identified for review. At least one perforator was identified in 92.1% of scans. Agreement percentages regarding the number of perforators ranged from 53% - 61% whereas agreement regarding the location of a single perforator ranged from 79% - 90%. However, reviewers did not agree regarding the type of perforator, with agreement ranging from 34% - 53%. Poor agreement was observed when compared to intraoperative data, with the number of perforators ranging from 26% - 34% and the type of perforator 11% - 24%. These findings are likely due to insufficient data available in operative reports. Conclusion: Although initial studies suggest that PET scan shows promising evidence to support the capacity to preoperatively identify ALT perforators, future prospective studies are warranted to fully validate these findings.
