Application of traditional chinese medicine in medical practice：a survey of community residents in Beijing,China

OBJECTIVE:To investigate how community residents in Beijing understood and used traditional chinese medicine(TCM) in their medical ***:This was a cross-sectional study conducted on 3410 community residents from four large communities of Tongzhou district in Beijng,China.A validated, self-administered questionnaire comprised of three sections was used to gather the data.A systematic sampling procedure was applied to recruit the community ***:A total of 3410 participants completed the questionnaire *** showed that in highly educated residents, 33.4%(170) knew of the names of 3-10 chinese herbals, 35.8%(182) knew of names of 3-10 traditional chinese patent *** all the respondent residents, 80.7%(2753)believed that TCM herbal therapy and TCM non-drug treatments were effective in disease treatment, health enhancement, 85.7%(2923) had taken traditional chinese patent drug in their life,56.8%(1937) of residents had used herbal decoction, 40.0%(1365) had received non-drug treatment of TCM, such as acupuncture, massage, cupping, auricular *** the elderly residents, 11.4%(98) often used chinese patent drug and 9.8%(85) often used herbal *** addition, 70.8%(2415) of residents were willing to accept knowledge and information on TCM for health enhancement and disease prevention, such as medicated diet, medicinal tea, Tai Chi and Qi Gong, although 82.8%(2825) of residents had never used ***:chinese patent drug and herbal decoction are widely used in the communities in Beijing, and there existed a possible close correlation between high educational level and better understanding of *** and occupation also correlated with the attitude to TCM *** characteristics of the residents should be considered seriously in the course of promoting the understanding and application of TCM.

Different Acupuncture for Neurodynia and Skin Lesions with Acute Herpes Zoster

Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of different acupuncture-moxibustion therapies for neurodynia and skin lesions of acute herpes zoster. Patients and Methods: From April 2007 to October 2009, 500 patients with clinical acute herpes zoster were included in the study. They were randomly divided into five groups as follow: electroacupuncture (E);electroacupuncture + cottonpave moxibustion (EC);electroacupuncture + fire acupuncture (EF);electroacupuncture + tapping combined with cupping (ET);control group of western medicine (WM). Results: The time of staunch bleb, scab and scab-off had no obvious statistical difference in the five groups;however, five methods could obviously reduce symptoms of herpes zoster and improved general symptoms. Within five days of treatment, compared to control group, the other four methods could more quickly ameliorate the general symptom of herpes zoster, and EF was superior to EC. In addition to electroacupuncture group, the treatment groups could relieve neuralgia and shortened duration of pain, which was superior to control group treatment. In addition, within first 3 days of treatment, the efficacy of treatment with E, EF or ET was superior to that of EC, and EF was better to E. After five days or end-of-treatment, the efficiency of odynolysis by treatment with EF, ETor EC was no more than E. The incidence of neurodynia was reduced after treatment with EC, EF or ET at 30th, 60th and 90th day, and pain of postherpetic neuralgia was relived. Conclusion: It is a certain advantages for organism reparation, abatement of neurodynia, and reduction of postherpetic neuralgia by acupuncture treatment.

Esophageal cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in the world. In recent years, the incidence and mortality of esophageal cancer have increased year by year, which has seriously threatened human health. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as the primary treatments of Western medicine, have achieved specific results in the clinic, but each has its limitations, this is mainly related to their side effects. The diversified treatment methods of traditional chinese medicine have visible clinical effects, especially in terms of reducing toxicity and increasing efficiency. This present review reviews the research progress of esophageal cancer in terms of traditional chinese medicine treatment, including the application of chinese medicine extract, chinese herbal compound, chinese patent medicine and TCM external treatment in clinical practice, may provide valuable information for the adjuvant treatment of esophageal cancer with traditional chinese medicine.

Anti-oxidative and immunological role of Cyclocarya paliurus polysaccharide on the liver injury of diabetic rats

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of Cyclocarya paliurus(C. paliurus) polysaccharide on the liver injury of diabetic rats. METHODS: Rats were divided into 6 groups, including normal group, model group, control group, low-dose group of C. paliurus polysaccharide treatment, middledose group of C. paliurus polysaccharide treatment and high-dose group of C. paliurus polysaccharide treatment. Histological analysis of liver was analyzed using hematoxilin and eosin. Levels of plasma biological parameters and anti-oxidative enzymes were determined by spectrophotometry. Nuclear factor kappa-B-p65(NF-κB p65), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), interleukins 6(IL-6), IL-1β were measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: Compared with that of model group, the glucose level of plasma decreased 62.32%(P < 0.01), but glycogen and insulin level increased 1.51 times and 1.27 times in the high-dose group of C. paliurus polysaccharide treatment, respectively. Plasma alanine aminotransferase(ALT), aspartate aminotransferase(AST), alkaline phosphatase(ALP) level decreased 47.47%(P < 0.05), 43.65%(P < 0.05) and 50.51%(P < 0.05) in the high-dose group of C. paliurus polysaccharide treatment, respectively. Superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase level increased 1.16 times(P < 0.01), 71.28%(P < 0.05), 1.29 times(P < 0.01) and 87.46%(P < 0.05) in the high-dose group of C. paliurus polysaccharide treatment, respectively. Enzyme activities of NF-κB, TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 were decreased 39.29%(P < 0.05), 51.11%(P < 0.05), 37.42%(P < 0.05) and 36.50%(P < 0.05), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Administration of C. paliurus polysaccharide may play a protecting role for liver injury of diabetic rats through lowering glucose, ALT, AST, ALP level, increasing glycogen and insulin level, enhancing the anti-oxidative ability and down-regulating the inflammatory factors expression.

Objective： To assess the effectiveness of Yishen Jiangu Granules（益肾健骨颗粒, YSJGG） on aromatase inhibitor-associated musculoskeletal symptoms（AIMSS）. Methods： A single-arm, open-label study was conducted in 34 postmenopausal women with breast cancer who experienced AIMSS. Patients were treated with YSJGG for 12 weeks（12.4 g orally twice daily）. The primary outcome was a change in the mean worst pain score of Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form（BPI-SF） over 12 weeks, and the second outcomes included changes in pain severity and pain-related interference of BPI-SF and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index（WOMAC）, Modified Score for the Assessment of Chronic Rheumatoid Affections of the Hands（M-SACRAH）, the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast（FACT-B）, bone mineral density（BMD） and blood indices such as calcium（Ca）, phosphate（P）, and alkaline phosphatase（ALP）. Results： Of 37 women recruited, 30 initiated the therapy and 24 were evaluable at 12 weeks. The primary outcome（BPI-SF worst pain scores） achieved a 2.17-point reduction compared with baseline（5.75±1.87 vs 3.58±2.15, P〈0.01）. There were reductions in pain severity（decreased 1.65, P〈0.01） and pain-related interference（decreased 2.55, P〈0.01）. The changes in WOMAC and M-SACRAH scores were similar to BPI-SF（P〈0.05）. In the FACT-B, only physical wel-being and functional wel-being were improved compared with baseline（P〈0.05）. No clinical differences were found in BMD, Ca, P and ALP. Conclusion： YSJGG is an effective and wel-tolerated agent to reduce AIMSS.

The first examples of ilexgenin A hybrids as a new class of multi-potent,anti-platelet agents

Seventeen novel ilexgenin A hybrids（lA-aspirin） and（IA-NO）,as donor hybrids（IA-NO will release NO in vivo and function as NO donor）,were designed and synthesized in order to develop new multi-targeting agents for the treatment of platelet *** in vitro activities against ADP,AA and thrombin were *** a result,IA hybrids achieved substantial increases in the three tested pathways compared with ***,the most potent hybrid compounds 6d and 14d displayed about 8-fold higher potency than aspirin,and 3-fold higher potency than the simultaneous administration of aspirin and IA in inhibiting ADP-induced aggregation with IC_（50） values of 0.15 mmol/L and 0.14 mmol/L,respectively. The results suggest these IA hybrids are good candidates for multi-target therapies,and especially,may be considered as promising ADP agonists.

Effect of Detoxification,Removing Stasis and Nourishing Yin Method on Corticosteroid-induced Hyperlipidemia in Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Objective： To observe the effect of TCM therapy for detoxification, removing stasis, and nourishing yin on corticosteroid-induced hyperlipemia in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus （SLE）, and to investigate its mechanism. Methods： One hundred and seventy patients with SLE were randomly assigned to the integrative medicine group （IM group） and the Western medicine group （WM group）, 85 in each group. Also, 30 healthy subjects selected from blood donors were enrolled in the normal control （NC） group. All patients were treated mainly with prednisone, while those in the IM group were given TCM therapy additionally, and the therapeutic course for both groups was 6 successive months. The changes of serum total cholesterol （TC）, triglyceride （TG）, high density lipoprotein cholesterol （HDL-C）, low density lipoprotein cholesterol （LDL-C）, very low density lipoprotein cholesterol （VLDL-C） and apolipoprotein A （ApoA） were determined and observed. A 2-year follow-up study was carried out in 16 patients of the WM group and 25 of the IM group. Results： Before treatment, no significant difference had been found among the three groups in the serum levels of lipids and lipoproteins. After the 6-month treatment, as compared with the WM group, the IM group showed lower levels of TC, TG, LDL-C, and VLDL-C （P〈0.05 or P〈0.01） and higher levels of HDL-C and ApoA （P〈0.05）. A similar effect was also shown by the follow-up study in the IM group （P〈0.05 or P〈0.01）. Conclusion： TCM therapy for detoxification, removing stasis, and nourishing yin can effectively regulate the levels of serum lipids and lipoproteins in preventing and treating SLE patients with corticosteroid-induced hyperlipemia.

The tubers and roots of Aconitum(Ranunculaceae)are widely used as heart medicine or analgesic agents for the treatment of coronary heart disease,chronic heart failure,rheumatoid arthritis and neuropathic pain since ancient *** a type of natural products mainly extracted from Aconitum plants,Aconitum alkaloids have complex chemical structures and exert remarkable biological activity,which are mainly responsible for significant effects of Aconitum *** present review is to summarize the progress of the pharmacological,toxicological,and pharmacokinetic studies of Aconitum alkaloids,so as to provide evidence for better clinical *** data concerning pharmacological,toxicological and pharmacokinetic studies of Aconitum alkaloids were collected from different scientific databases(PubMed,CNKI,Google Scholar,Baidu Scholar,and Web of Science)using the phrase Aconitum alkaloids,as well as generic *** alkaloids are both bioactive compounds and toxic ingredients in Aconitum *** produce a wide range of pharmacological activities,including protecting the cardiovascular system,nervous system,and immune system and anti-cancer ***,Aconitum alkaloids also exert strong cardiac toxicity,neurotoxicity and liver toxicity,which are supported by clinical ***,pharmacokinetic studies indicated that cytochrome P450 proteins(CYPs)and efflux transporters(ETs)are closely related to the low bioavailability of Aconitum alkaloids and play an important role in their metabolism and detoxification in vivo.
