Salient pairwise spatio-temporal interest points for real-time activity recognition

Real-time Human action classification in complex scenes has applications in various domains such as visual surveillance, video retrieval and human robot interaction. While, the task is challenging due to computation efficiency, cluttered backgrounds and intro-variability among same type of actions. Spatio-temporal interest point (STIP) based methods have shown promising results to tackle human action classification in complex scenes efficiently. However, the state-of-the-art works typically utilize bag-of-visual words (BoVW) model which only focuses on the word distribution of STIPs and ignore the distinctive character of word structure. In this paper, the distribution of STIPs is organized into a salient directed graph, which reflects salient motions and can be divided into a time salient directed graph and a space salient directed graph, aiming at adding spatio-temporal discriminant to BoVW. Generally speaking, both salient directed graphs are constructed by labeled STIPs in pairs. In detail, the “directional co-occurrence” property of different labeled pairwise STIPs in same frame is utilized to represent the time saliency, and the space saliency is reflected by the “geometric relationships” between same labeled pairwise STIPs across different frames. Then, new statistical features namely the Time Salient Pairwise feature (TSP) and the Space Salient Pairwise feature (SSP) are designed to describe two salient directed graphs, respectively. Experiments are carried out with a homogeneous kernel SVM classifier, on four challenging datasets KTH, ADL and UT-Interaction. Final results confirm the complementary of TSP and SSP, and our multi-cue representation TSP + SSP + BoVW can properly describe human actions with large intro-variability in real-time.

This paper presents some techniques for synthesizing novel view for a virtual viewpoint from two given views cap-tured at different viewpoints to achieve both high quality and high efficiency. The whole process consists of three passes. The first pass recovers depth map. We formulate it as pixel labelling and propose a bisection approach to solve it. It is accomplished in log2n(n is the number of depth levels) steps,each of which involves a single graph cut computation. The second pass detects occluded pixels and reasons about their depth. It fits a foreground depth curve and a background depth curve using depth of nearby fore-ground and background pixels,and then distinguishes foreground and background pixels by minimizing a global energy,which involves only one graph cut computation. The third pass finds for each pixel in the novel view the corresponding pixels in the input views and computes its color. The whole process involves only a small number of graph cut computations,therefore it is efficient. And,visual artifacts in the synthesized view can be removed successfully by correcting depth of the occluded pixels. Experimental results demonstrate that both high quality and high efficiency are achieved by the proposed techniques.

Molecular information gathering and proces- sing -- a young field of applied chemistry -- is undergoing good growth. The progress is occurring both in terms of conceptual development and in terms of the strengthening of older concepts with new examples. This review critically surveys these two broad avenues. We consider some cases where molecules emulate one of the building blocks of electronic logic gates. We then examine molecular emulation of various Boolean logic gates carrying one, two or three inputs. Some single-input gates are popular information gathering devices. Special systems, such as ＇lab-on-a-molecule＇ and molecular key- pad locks, also receive attention. A situation deviating from the Boolean blueprint is also discussed. Some pointers are offered for maintaining the upward curve of the field.

We consider a spectrum efficiency(SE)maximization problem for cooperative power beacon-enabled wireless powered communication networks(CPB-WPCNs),where each transmitter harvests en-ergy from multi-antenna power beacons(PBs)and transmits data to the corresponding *** data transmission,both orthogonal transmission,i.e.,the time splitting(TS)mode,and non-orthogonal trans-mission,i.e.,the interference channel(IC)mode,are *** to improve the system SE,the energy beamformers of PBs,the transmit power,and the transmit time duration of transmitters are jointly *** the TS mode,the original non-convex problem is transformed into a convex opti-mization problem by means of variable substitution and semidefinite relaxation(SDR).The rank-one na-ture of this SDR is proved,and then a Lagrange-dual based fast algorithm is proposed to obtain the opti-mal solution with much lower *** the IC mode,to conquer the strong non-convexity of the problem,a branch-reduce-and-bound(BRB)mono-tonic optimization algorithm is designed as a ***,a low-complexity distributed suc-cessive convex approximation(SCA)algorithm is ***,simulation results validate the perfor-mance of the proposed algorithms,achieving optimal-ity within only 1%∼2%computation time compared to the CVX solver in the TS mode and achieving 98%of the optimal performance in the IC mode.

A high-resolution finite element scheme is developed for the computation offree surface problems. The present higher-order accuracy scheme is obtained through the introductionof the difference of almost equal amount of diffusion and antidiffusion, where the antidiffusion isformulated as approximation to diffusion making use of consecutive gradient. The non-oscillatoryproperties are secured by limiters to preserve positivity constraints. The implement of the schemeis based on semi-discrete form and can be considered as reconstruction of the coefficient matrix ofalgebraic system, so, it can he conveniently used by either structured or unstructured meshes. Thepower and flexibility of the present high resolution VOF-FEM approach is validated by examplesincluding convective transport, dam breaking flow, and stilling basin flow in hydraulic engineering.
