Economic analysis of solar energy development in North Africa

The economic analysis of solar energy development is the basis of promoting the solar energy planning in north Africa and realizing the clean energy power transmission among continents. In this paper, the cost development trend of photovoltaic(PV) power and concentrating solar power(CSP) generation is analyzed, and the levelized cost of energy(LCOE) of solar power generation is forecasted. Then, taking the development of Tunisian solar energy as an example in the context of transcontinental transmission, PV power with energy storage and PV-CSP power generation are given as two kinds of development plan respectively. The installed capacity configurations of the two schemes are given with production simulation method, and comprehensive LCOE are calculated. The studies show that based on the LCOE forecast value, the LCOE of PV-CSP combined power generation will decrease when the annual utilization hours of transmission channel is increased. It can be chosen as one of important mode of the North Africa solar energy development.

As an industry and a discipline,geotechnical investigation in China differs from that in the USA and European countries in its course of emergence and evolution. For over half a century,Chinese geotechnical investigation professionals witnessed continuous technical advances as they undertook independently almost all of China's large-scale construction projects. Based on projects that won the "National Outstanding Engineering Investigation" Gold Medal Awards since the year 2000,this paper discusses the achievements of geotechnical investigation in the context of comprehensive technical ability,project evaluation and analysis,hi-tech applications and engineering monitoring,and analyzes several factors that have hindered the industry's further development and alignment with international practice. Finally,some suggestions are given for future improvement.

Food safety,specifically in restaurants,is becoming a key public health priority because of the increased number of meals eaten outside the *** illness prevention thus is a significant concern and a public health priority in the United Arab Emirates,particularly Dubai,because of the extensive tourism *** purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of using demonstrations in training sessions to improve food safety knowledge and practices amongst food handlers.A descriptive and quantitative approach has been applied to collect the quantifiable information related to the research *** has been further analyzed using the correlation tests to gather the required *** comparison of the pre-test scores between the intervention and the control group,the t-test analysis showed significant difference in the level of food safety knowledge between the two ***-test score for the control group was 78.33 and post-test score was *** the case of the intervention group,pre-test score was 91.37 and post-test score was *** scores of food handlers’food safety practice for control group:pre-treatment score was 470 and post-treatment score was *** intervention group:pre-test score was 723 and post-test score was 1,*** study concluded that training with demonstration techniques is an effective way of improving compliance with food safety *** has been understood that training helps in improving the performance of the employees while reducing the foodborne diseases and maintaining hygiene in the *** study recommends every restaurant needs to provide regular trainings to the employees so that the restaurants can maintain hygiene and food safety practices.

Multi-objective and multi-scheme research on water and sediment regulation potential of reservoirs in the upper Yellow River

The problems of the deteriorating relation between water and sediment, and the escalating conflict between water supply and demand in the upper Yellow River(YR), need to be addressed. Reservoirs of Longyangxia, Liujiaxia, and Heishanxia(Long-Liu-Hei) in the upper YR are taken as the research object, and a multi-objective, water-sediment optimal operation model for cascade reservoirs Long-Liu-Hei has been developed. This operation model considers the comprehensive requirements of water supply, power generation, flood control, and especially, water and sediment regulation. The improved Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithms(NSGA-II) method is used to demonstrate the water and sediment regulation potential of three scenario schemes under long-term conditions, and the adjustable water allocation of four schemes under typical year conditions are calculated. It is recommended to use the mode of generating hydropower depending on the available water amount as the best operating mode under the conditions of a long time series and for typical years. This recommended operation mode has verified the rationality and accuracy of the reservoir operations *** the same time, compared with the calculation results for water and sediment regulation after the construction of the Heishanxia, the current research indicates:(1) Under the recommended model, the potential for water and sediment regulation under the long-term series and typical years is once every four years.(2) Inter-basin water transfer greatly improves the cascade power generation. When the adjustable water volume is converted into the controlled volume for water and sediment regulation,the intensity frequency of water and sediment regulation of cascade reservoirs are improved.(3) With the intensification of the contradiction between the supply of and demand for water resources in the upper YR in the future, the amount of transferable water exhibits a decreasing trend, and the regulation of water and sediment in th

Currently, the monitoring of bridges in China heavily relies on manual operation, which has several major problems. It generally takes a very long time to complete an inspection process on bridges. The manual data is sometimes unreliable or even wrong in the case of careless operation. The inspection activity itself is dangerous for inspectors, e.g., bridges are located in the sea or river. Some semi-automatic monitoring methods are recently employed, but they are either very expensive or do not work properly. Therefore, the traditional bridge monitoring process becomes an increasing challenge for bridge operators. In this paper, a real-time and automatic bridge monitoring system is presented to meet the bridge monitoring needs, and MEMS （Micro Electro Mechanical Systems） are the key building block in this system. By using the MEMS-based sensors, it is much more efficient and accurate in monitoring bridges with the measurement of inclination, acceleration, displacement, moisture, temperature, stress and other data.

Over the last 25 years the conservation of 20^(th)-century heritage has developed into a distinct area of practice, catalysed by the efforts of dedicated international and local interest groups and the forward thinking of a number of government and inter-government organisations who identified, protected and developed approaches to its care. Much has been achieved, but more work is needed to address many of the distinct challenges to conserving the heritage of the 20^(th) century. In 2011, the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) launched its Conserving Modern Architecture Initiative (CMAI), which seeks to respond to the outstanding current challenges and contribute to advancing practice in this emerging area of conservation. It began with a survey of the field to identify where existing efforts could be best supported and enhanced, or where knowledge gaps could be potentially filled. In response the GCI built a comprehensive program to meet these identified needs and five years later, a number of activities and projects are underway. These include a series of publications, a training program, historical and technical research and two field projects at Louis Kahn’s Salk Biological Institute (1965) and the house of Ray and Charles Eames (1949), both in California. This paper outlines current GCI efforts, reports on initial outcomes and describes forthcoming activities.
