This review summarizes the rapporteur report on tropical cyclone(TC)intensity change from the operational perspective,as presented to the 10th International Workshop on TCs(IWTC-10)held in Bali,Indonesia,from Dec.5–9,*** accuracy of TC intensity forecasts issued by operational forecast centers depends on three aspects:real-time observations,TC dynamical model forecast guidance,and techniques and methods used by *** rapporteur report covers the progress made over the past four years(2018–2021)in all three *** review focuses on the progress of dynamical model forecast *** companion paper(Part II)summarizes the advance from operational *** dynamical model forecast guidance continues to be the main factor leading to the improvement of operational TC intensity ***,we describe recent advances and developments of major operational regional dynamical TC models and their intensity forecast performance,including HWRF,HMON,COAMPS-TC,Met office Regional Model,CMA-TYM,and newly developed *** performance of global dynamical models,including NOAA's GFS,Met office Global Model(MOGM),JMA's GSM,and IFS(ECMWF),has also been improved in recent years due to their increased horizontal and vertical resolution as well as improved data assimilation *** challenging cases of rapid intensification are presented and discussed.

Here we discuss recent progress in understanding tropical cyclone(TC)subseasonal variability and its *** has been a concerted effort to understand the sources of predictability at subseasonal time-scales,and this effort has continued to make progress in recent *** the Madden-Julian Oscillation(MJO),other modes of variability affect TCs at these time-scales,in particular various equatorial ***,TC activity is also modulated by extratropical processes via Rossby wave *** has also been progress in the ability of models to simulate the MJO and its modulation of TC *** efforts have created multi-model ensemble datasets,which have made it possible to evaluate the forecast skill of the MJO and TCs on subseasonal time-scales in multiple forecasting *** there is positive skill in some cases,there is strong dependence on the ensemble system considered,the basin examined,and whether the storms have extratropical influences or ***,the definition of skill differs among *** centers are currently issuing subseasonal TC forecasts using various techniques(statistical,statistical-dynamical and dynamical).There is also a strong interest in the private sector for forecasts with 3-4 weeks lead time.

Boosting the resilience of power systems is a core requirement of smart grids. In fact, resilience enhancement is crucial to all critical infrastructure *** this study, we review the current research on system resilience enhancement within and beyond smart grids. In addition, we elaborate on resilience definition and resilience quantification and discuss several challenges and opportunities for system resilience enhancement. This study aims to deepen our understanding of the concept of resilience and develop a wide perspective on enhancing the system resilience for critical infrastructures.

In nonfullerene acceptor-(NFA-)based solar cells,the exciton splitting takes place at both domain interface and donor/acceptor mixture,which brings in the state of mixing phase into *** energetics and morphology are key parameters dictating the charge generation,diffusion,and *** is revealed that tailoringthe electronic properties of the mixing region by doping with larger-bandgap components could reduce the density of state but elevate the filling state level,leading to improved open-circuit voltage(V_(OC))and reduced *** monomolecular and bimolecular recombinations are shown to be intercorrelated,which show a Gaussian-like relationship with V_(OC) and linear relationship with short-circuit current density(JSC)and fill factor(FF).The kinetics of hole transfer and exciton diffusion scale with JSC similarly,indicating the carrier generation in mixing region and crystalline domain are equally *** the morphology perspective,the crystalline order could contribute to V_(OC) improvement,and the fibrillar structure strongly affects the *** observations highlight the importance of the mixing region and its connection with crystalline domains and point out the design rules to optimize the mixing phase structure,which is an effective approach to further improve device performance.

The Panda X-4T experiment, a 4-ton scale dark matter direct detection experiment, is being planned at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. In this paper we present a simulation study of the expected background in this experiment. In a 2.8-ton fiducial mass and the signal region between 1-10 keV electron equivalent energy, the total electron recoil background is found to be 4.9 × 10^(-5) kg^(-1) d^(-1) keV^(-1). The nuclear recoil background in the same region is 2.8 × 10^(-7) kg^(-1) d^(-1) keV^(-1). With an exposure of 5.6 ton-years, the sensitivity of Panda X-4 T could reach a minimum spin-independent dark matter-nucleon cross section of 6 × 10^(-48) cm^2 at a dark matter mass of 40 Ge V/c^2.

This study investigates the steam generating potential of a solar steam generation system and the potential for utility scale implementation in Libya oil for steam demanding enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods. The proposed system uses parabolic troughs as solar collectors. The technology is proved to be technically feasible. Solar EOR should be seen as an add-on to existing plants due to the abundance of solar energy in Libya. The System Advisor Model (SAM) model system, developed by the National office of Renewable Energy (NRE), was used to assess the plant’s active and economic performance.

Triangulation of red sprites observed above a mesoscale convective system in North China

The triangulation of red sprites was obtained, based on concurrent observations over a mesoscale convective system(MCS) in North China from two stations separated by about 450 km. In addition, broadband sferics from the sprite-producing lightning were measured at five ground stations, making it possible to locate and identify the individual causative lightning discharges for different elements in this dancing sprite event. The results of our analyses indicate that the sprites were produced above the trailing stratiform region of the MCS, and their parent strokes were located mainly in the peripheral area of the stratiform. The lateral offset between sprites and causative strokes ranges from a few km to more than 50 km. In a particularly bright sprite, with a distinct halo feature and streamers descending down to an altitude of approximately 48 km, the sprite current signal identified in the electric sferic, measured at a range of about 1,110 km, peaked at approximately 1 ms after the return stroke.
