Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation(AMOC)plays a central role in long-term climate variations through its heat and freshwater transports,which can collapse under a rapid increase of greenhouse gas forcing in climate *** studies have suggested that the deviation of model parameters is one of the major factors in inducing inaccurate AMOC *** this work,with a low-resolution earth system model,the authors try to explore whether a reasonable adjustment of the key model parameter can help to re-establish the AMOC after its *** a new optimization strategy,the extra freshwater flux(FWF)parameter is determined to be the dominant one affecting the AMOC’s *** traditional ensemble optimal interpolation(EnOI)data assimilation and new machine learning methods are adopted to optimize the FWF parameter in an abrupt 4×CO_(2) forcing experiment to improve the adaptability of model parameters and accelerate the recovery of *** results show that,under an abrupt 4×CO_(2) forcing in millennial simulations,the AMOC will first collapse and then re-establish by the default FWF parameter ***,during the parameter adjustment process,the saltier and colder sea water over the North Atlantic region are the dominant factors in usefully improving the adaptability of the FWF parameter and accelerating the recovery of AMOC,according to their physical relationship with FWF on the interdecadal timescale.

In this paper, the interdecadal variability of upper-ocean temperature in the South china Sea（SCS） is investigated based on several objectively analyzed data sets and two reanalysis data sets. The trends of the SCS sea surface temperature（SST） have changed from warming to cooling since the late 1990 s. A heat budget analysis suggests that the warming of the surface mixed layer during 1984-1999 is primarily attributed to the horizontal heat advection and the decrease of upward long wave radiation, with the net surface heat flux playing a damping role due to the increase of upward latent and sensible heat fluxes. On the other hand, the cooling of the surface mixed layer during 2000-2009 is broadly controlled by net surface heat flux, with the radiation flux playing the dominant role. A possible mechanism is explored that the variation of a sea level pressure（SLP） over the North Pacific ocean may change the prevailing winds over the SCS, which contributes to the change of the SST in the SCS through the horizontal heat advection and heat fluxes.

china has launched her first ocean color satellite HY-1A on May 15, 2002 since American ocean color satellite SeaSTAR was on the orbit in 1997. First, the properties and characteristics of HY-1A are briefly introduced; second, the quality and availability are evaluated by means of the complex signal noise ratio ( CSNR) which is simulated theoretically; third, the received HY-1A data are compared with SeaSTAR data to understand the accuracy of radiance measurement by the HY-1A; finally, the remote sensing products of ocean color and temperature are mapped to study the application potentiality of HY-1A. The results show that the HY-1A has its latent capability for the application of marine environment detection, the management and protection of marine resources, and the national rights and interests. Meanwhile some suggestions are proposed to modify the next ocean satellite.

A large number of papers have been published and great efforts have been made in the recent 20 years by the Chinese oceanographic and meteorological scientists in the ocean-atmosphere interaction studies. The present paper is an overview of the major achievements made by Chinese scientists aad their collaborators in studies of larger scale ocean-atmosphere interaction in the following oceans： the South china Sea, the Tropical Pacific, the indian ocean and the North Pacific. Many interesting phenomena and dynamic mechanisms have been discovered and studied in these papers. These achievements have improved our understanding of climate variability and have great implications in climate prediction, and thus are highly relevant to the ongoing international Climate Variability and Predictability （CLIVAR） efforts.

In a barotropic model the propagation of long-lived anticyclonic Gaussian eddies larger than the radius of deformation over a Gaussian-shaped topography and the merging of the two anticyclonic eddies are investigated by solving the generalized Flierl-Yamagata equation. It is shown that whether or not the basic flow is present, the isolated topography seems to encourage the amplification of an anticyclonic eddy and its southwest movement around the hill In the absence of both the westward flow and the topography, two anticyclonic eddies of identical sizes and amplitudes can merge. However, either the including of the topography or the westward basic flow can make them not merge. In the presence of both, the eddies can merge, but this merging depends on whether the parameter condition is appropriate or not. Therefore, it can be concluded that the topographic forcing might be a possible mechanism for the merging of two anticyclonic eddies.

The primary results of quantitative ocean color retrieval in china coastal area with CBERS CCD data

Using the techniques of quantitative ocean color sensing, the in-water ocean color algorithms for sediment and chlorophyll-a retrieval are established for CBERS-02 CCD broad spectral bands based on in situ data. The remote sensing reflectance of water is derived from CCD radiance data by a clear water atmospheric correction algorithm. Then, the sediment and chlorophyll-a concentrations are retrieved from CCD image. The sediment retrieval is quite satisfactory, but the chlorophyll-a retrieval is not so good because of the broadband width and low signal-to-noise ratio of the CCD camera.

Using wavelet transform, the sea surface temperature (SST) during the period of 1982-1999 of the South china Sea and the equatorial Pacific, from datasets of NOAA/AVHRR, was analyzed. It is shown that there are 4- and 8-year interannual oscillations in the eastern equatorial Pacific and 8-year interannual oscillation in the western equatorial Pacific. In terms of attractive time-frequency localization and multi-scale properties of wavelet transform, as shown by the Morlet wavelet, it is found that an in-phase coupling oscillation occurs between the SCS and the equatorial Pacific. The SST changes of SCS will have echoed every event of El Nino (abnormally warm) and La Nina (abnormally cold) in the equatorial Pacific. There is a positive correlation between the SCS and the western equatorial Pacific in the 8-year time-scale. Evidence is presented that the SST anomalies of the equatorial Pacific influence the SST of the SCS.

Temperature in the Eastern china Seas(ECS), including the Bohai, Yellow, and East china seas, is crucially important with regard to weather forecasting and fishery activities of adjacent countries. Although sea surface temperature(SST) in the ECS has demonstrated a dramatically accelerated trend of warming after a regime shift(1976–1996), trends beneath the surface remain poorly understood because of the sparsity of observations. This study used in situ hydrographic data from 1976 to 1996 to examine upperocean temperature trends in the ECS. It was found that the multilevel trends show consistency with that of the surface water; i.e., warming is faster in winter than summer. However, the magnitudes of the trends weaken with increasing depth. Furthermore, the seasonal dif ference in the upper ocean is mainly associated with the warm currents in the ECS, which implies an essential contribution from horizontal advection. These phenomena could also be detected from data acquired from the routinely observed PN and 34°N sections. The spatiotemporal patterns of temperature trends in the upper ECS extend our understanding beyond the SST, especially highlighting the role of ocean dynamics in forming temperature patterns beneath the surface in comparison with atmospheric ef fects.
