The hematological and serum biochemical profiles of apparently healthy exotic breed of dogs in Jos, Plateau state, Nigeria was studied in this research. One hundred and seven exotic breed of dogs were examined from October - December, 2018. The results from physical, clinical examinations and parasitological examinations were used to determine apparently healthy exotic breed of dogs which were used in this study. The parameters measured were rectal temperature, parasitaemia, hematology which included red blood cells count, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and hemoglobin content;total white blood cell count, including eosinophils, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes counts, and platelets;serum biochemical parameters also included Aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, total proteins, albumin, globulin, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, cholesterol and triglyceride, using standard methods. Data generated from the study were statistically analyzed using students t-test one-way analysis of variance while the level of significance was measured at p < 0.05. From this study, hematological and serum biochemical values were comparable to and not different from those reported for dogs in available literature, but the upper and lower reference limits (minimum and maximum values) were different for most parameters. Sex-related significant difference (p < 0.05) occurred only in WBC and total protein while age-related significant difference occurred only in total protein and urea level. Lumpy skin disease(LSD)is a transboundary disease affecting cattle and has a detrimental effect on the cattle industries in numerous countries in Africa,Europe and *** 2021,LSD outbreaks have been reported in almost all of Thailand's ***,fitting LSD occurrences using mathematical models provide important knowledge in the realm of animal disease ***,the objective of this study is to fit the pattern of daily new LSD cases and daily cumulative LSD cases in Thailand using mathematical *** first-and second-order models in the forms of Lorentzian,Gaussian and Pearson-type VII models are used to fit daily new LSD cases whereas Richard's growth,Boltzmann sigmoidal and Power-law growth models are utilized to fit the curve of cumulative LSD *** on the root-mean-squared error(RMSE)and Akaike information criterion(AIC),results showed that both first and second orders of Pearson-type VII models and Richard's growth model(RGM)were fit to the data better than other models used in the present *** obtained models and their parameters can be utilized to describe the LSD outbreak in *** disease preparedness purposes,we can use the first order of the Pearson-type VII model to estimate the time of maximum infected cases occurring when the growth rate of infected cases starts to slow ***,the period when the growth rate changes at a slower rate,known as the inflection time,obtained from RGM allows us to anticipate when the pandemic has peaked and the situation has *** is the first study that utilizes mathematical methods to fit the LSD epidemics in *** study offers decision-makers and authorities with valuable information for establishing an effective disease control strategy.

Blood and Gastrointestinal Parasites of Chickens and Turkeys Reared in the Tropical Rainforest Zone of Southeastern Nigeria

The blood and gastrointestinal (GI) parasites of chickens and turkeys reared in Owerri, Southeastern Nigeria were studied. Out of 5600 birds, 5040 (90%) were chickens and 560 (10%) were turkeys. Of these birds, 672 (12%) were infected with blood parasites, of which 448 (8.9%) were chickens and 224 (40%) turkeys. The blood parasites found in chickens were Leucocytozoon sp., with a prevalence rate of 448 (8.9%) occurring in both male and female chickens examined. Plasmodium sp. was found in the turkeys and it gave a prevalence of 224 (40%). 1792 (32%) of the birds were infected with faecal parasites, out of which, 1456 (28.9%) were chickens and 336 (60%) turkeys examined. Ascaridia sp. infected 1232 (24.4%) of the chickens and 336 (60%) of the turkeys were examined. The only cestode observed was Raillietina spp., which infected 224 (4.4%) of the chickens, but none in the turkeys. Generally, low blood and faecal infections were observed in the chickens, while infections in the turkeys were slightly higher.

Anti-Mullerian Hormone and Follicle Counts as Predictors of Superovulatory Response and Embryo Production in Beef Cattle

This study evaluated Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) and/or follicle counts as predictors of subsequent superovulatory response and embryo production in 79 beef cows. Before superovulation, 3 to 5 mm follicles presented on the ovaries of donor cows were counted, and blood was collected for measure of serum AMH. Across cows, serum AMH ranged from 0.013 to 0.898 ng/mL, with a mean of 0.293 ng/mL. The distribution of both AMH concentrations and follicle counts were divided into quartiles (AMH Q1 through Q4, with Q1 the lowest and Q4 the highest) for analysis. Donor cows in AMH Q4 had a greater (P < 0.001) number of 3 to 5 mm follicles at the start of superovulation than did donors in either Q1 or Q2. At embryo collection, cows in AMH Q3 and 4 had more (P < 0.001) palpable corpora lutea (CL) than cows in AMH Q1. The mean number of embryos recovered from donor cows in AMH Q4 was greater (P < 0.001) than those recovered from cows in either AMH Q1 or 2, but similar to that of AMH Q3. Analysis indicated that AMH was positively correlated (P < 0.001) with mean follicles (r = 0.458), CL (r = 0.452) and embryos recovered (r = 0.430). Donor cows with higher follicle counts (F Q3 and 4) at the start of superovulation had more (P < 0.001) palpable CL at embryo collection than donor cows in F Q1 or 2. More (P < 0.001) embryos were recovered from cows with the highest follicle counts (F Q4) as compared with cows having lower (F Q1 and 2) follicle counts. Results confirm that relative AMH concentration was positively correlated with number of small antral follicles in the ovaries of cows;both AMH measure and antral follicle counts might be used to predict subsequent superovulatory response in beef cows.

The past decade has seen rapid progress in the field of canid behavioral genetics. The recent advances are summarized in this review. The identification of the genes responsible for tameness in silver foxes is the culmination of a half century of behavioral testing and,more recently, genomic investigation. There is agreement that domestic dogs evolved from wolves, but when and from which population remains *** genetic differences between wolves and dogs identified include those for neurotransmitters and *** differences in behavior are well known, but only recently have the genetics underlying these differences been investigated. The genes responsible for flank sucking in Doberman Pinschers and for several other obsessive compulsive problems in other breeds have been identified. Aggression is the least desirable canine trait, and several laboratories have detected differences in neurotransmitters and their receptors between aggressive and non-aggressive dogs. In English Cocker Spaniels, the genes linked to aggressive behavior code for dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate receptors. A dopamine transporter gene has been associated with impulsive behavior in Malinois.

Prevalence and Predictors of Salmonella spp. in Retail Meat Shops in Kathmandu

A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2008 to May 2009 to estimate the prevalence of Salmonella in retail meat shops in Kathmandu. The methods followed were ISO 18593：2004 for swab sample collection, ISO 6579：2002 for Salmonella isolation and manufacturer＇s instructions （SIFIN, Germany） for serotype identification. A questionnaire was used to collect information on some of the risk factors of shops likely to be associated with Salmonella identification. A total of 492 environmental swab samples （164 chopping board samples, 164 knife samples and 164 table samples） from 82 retail meat shops were analyzed. The prevalence of Salmonella positive shops was 40.2% （95% CI： 29-51）. The isolation rates of Salmonella from chopping boards （36.0%）, knives （32.9%） and tables （25.0%） were not significantly different （P 〉 0.05）. Retail meat shops were 1.9 times more likely to yield Salmonella in the evening （38.2%） as compared to the morning （24.4%）（P = 0.001）. S. Typhimurium （54.5%） was the most common serotype found in retail meat shops followed by S. Enteritidis （16.9%）, S. Haifa （13.6%）, S. Virchow （10.4%）, S. Agona （3.9%） and S. enterica （0.6%）. Among the risk factors examined, ＂hygiene status of shop＂, ＂type of shops＂, ＂number of person handling meats＂, ＂number of knives used＂, ＂number of kinds of meat sold＂ and ＂number of kinds of meat sold using different numbers of knives＂ were individually significantly （P 〈 0.05） associated with Salmonella contamination in the retail meat shops. After univariate analysis of these risk factors, a final logistic regression model with Salmonella yes or no category of shops as outcome variable identified four significant predictors. Odds ratios, indicating the likelihood increase of a shop to achieve Salmonella positivity status were 10.17 for multiple persons rather than a single person involved, 7.66 for open rather than closed shops, 9.44 for use of several knives rather than one knife and 5.18 for single kind of meat using

Assessment of canopy vigor information from kiwifruit plants based on a digital surface model from unmanned aerial vehicle imagery

Information about canopy vigor and growth are critical to assess the potential impacts of biotic or abiotic stresses on plant *** implementing a Digital Surface Model(DSM)to imagery obtained using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAV),it is possible to filter canopy information effectively based on height,which provides an efficient method to discriminate canopy from soil and lower vegetation such as weeds or cover *** paper describes a method based on the DSM to assess canopy growth(CG)as well as missing plants from a kiwifruit orchard on a plant-by-plant *** DSM was initially extracted from the overlapping RGB aerial imagery acquired over the kiwifruit orchard using the Structure from Motion(SfM)*** adaptive threshold algorithm was implemented using the height difference between soil/lower plants and kiwifruit canopies to identify plants and extract canopy information on a non-regular ***,a customized algorithm was developed to discriminate single kiwifruit plants automatically,which allowed the estimation of individual canopy cover fractions(fc).By applying differential fc thresholding,four categories of the CG were determined automatically:(i)missing plants;(ii)low vigor;(iii)moderate vigor;and(iv)*** were validated by a detailed visual inspection on the ground,which rendered an overall accuracy of 89.5%for the method proposed to assess CG at the plant-by-plant ***,the accuracies for CG category(i)-(iv)were 94.1%,85.1%,86.7%,and 88.0%,*** proposed method showed also to be appropriate to filter out weeds and other smaller non-plant materials which are extremely difficult to be distinguished by common colour thresholding or edge identification methods.

Predicting cutaneous leishmaniasis using SARIMA and Markov switching models in Isfahan, Iran: A time-series study

Objective:To determine the potential effect of environment variables on cutaneous leishmaniasis occurrence using time-series models and compare the predictive ability of seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average(SARIMA)models and Markov switching model(MSM).Methods:This descriptive study employed yearly and monthly data of 49364 parasitologically-confirmed cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Isfahan province,located in the center of Iran from January 2000 to December *** data were provided by the leishmaniasis national surveillance system,the meteorological organization of Isfahan province,and Iranian Space Agency for vegetation *** SARIMA and MSM models were implemented to examine the environmental factors of cutaneous leishmaniasis ***:The minimum relative humidity,maximum relative humidity,minimum wind speed,and maximum wind speed were significantly associated with cutaneous leishmaniasis epidemics in different lags(P<0.05).Comparing SARIMA and MSM,Akaikes information criterion(AIC),and mean absolute percentage error(MAPE)in MSM were much smaller than SARIMA models(MSM:AIC=0.95,MAPE=3.5%;SARIMA:AIC=158.93,MAPE:11.45%).Conclusions:SARIMA and MSM can be a useful tool for predicting cutaneous leishmaniasis in Isfahan *** cutaneous leishmaniasis falls into one of two states of epidemic and non-epidemic,the use of MSM(dynamic)is recommended,which can provide more information compared to models that use a single distribution for all observations(Box-Jenkins SARIMA model).

Has the Luangwa (Zambia) hippopotamus (<i>Hippopotamus amphibius</i>) population stabilized after reaching its asymptote? What are the management challenges?

The population size of hippo (HippopotamusamphibiusLinnaeus 1758)in Luangwa valley, Zambia was earlier assessed for the period 1976 - 2008 and repeated 2009-2012 and found to have reached and maintained carrying capacityKof 6000 individuals over a165 kmriver stretch. This study covered the period 2009 -2012 and used river bank count method as in previous studies. The method involved counting individuals and taking GPS locations of hippo schools. During the period 2009-2012the population had maintained irregular cycles oscillating above and below K of 6000 and was still within carrying capacity band of 2000 individuals. The highest population size was still 6832 hippos (rounded off to 7000) and density of 42/km reached in 1984, and the lowest was 4765 hippos (rounded off to 5000) and density of 29/km recorded in 1978. Between 1976-2008, and 2009-2012 the population still oscillated between 5000 - 7000 individuals, which is symptomatic of a population that had reached its asymptote. Plot of population size for the period 1976-2012 assumed a population model which was a hybrid between less accurate regulation and stable limit cycle. The slowdown in population growth atKand oscillationswere attributed to environmental *** studies are required to identify the impact of climate change on the population size and density fluctuations to determine whetherKwill rise or drop.
