Probiotic Pediococcus pentosaceus restored gossypol-induced intestinal barrier injury by increasing propionate content in Nile tilapia

Background Intestinal barrier is a dynamic interface between the body and the ingested food components, however, dietary components or xenobiotics could compromise intestinal integrity, causing health risks to the host. Gossypol, a toxic component in cottonseed meal(CSM), caused intestinal injury in fish or other monogastric animals. It has been demonstrated that probiotics administration benefits the intestinal barrier integrity, but the efficacy of probiotics in maintaining intestinal health when the host is exposed to gossypol remains unclear. Here, a strain(YC) affiliated to Pediococcus pentosaceus was isolated from the gut of Nile tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus) and its potential to repair gossypol-induced intestinal damage was *** A total of 270 Nile tilapia(2.20 ± 0.02 g) were allotted in 3 groups with 3 tanks each and fed with 3 diets including CON(control diet), GOS(control diet containing 300 mg/kg gossypol) and GP(control diet containing 300 mg/kg gossypol and 10^(8) colony-forming unit(CFU)/g P. pentosaceus YC), respectively. After 10 weeks, addition of P. pentosaceus YC restored growth retardation and intestinal injury induced by gossypol in Nile tilapia. Transcriptome analysis and si RNA interference experiments demonstrated that NOD-like receptors(NLR) family caspase recruitment domain(CARD) domain containing 3(Nlrc3) inhibition might promote intestinal stem cell(ISC) proliferation, as well as maintaining gut barrier integrity. 16S r RNA sequencing and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS) revealed that addition of P. pentosaceus YC altered the composition of gut microbiota and increased the content of propionate in fish gut. Changes in muscle strength and risk of cardiovascular disease among middle-aged and older adults in China:Evidence from a prospective cohort study

Background:Evidence indicates that low muscle strength is associated with an increased cardiovascular diseases(CVDs)***,the association between muscle strength changes based on repeated measurements and CVD incidence remains ***:The study used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study in 2011(Wave 1),2013(Wave 2),2015(Wave 3),and 2018(Wave 4).Low muscle strength was defined as handgrip strength<28 kg for men or<18 kg for women,or chair-rising time≥12 *** on changes in muscle strength from Waves 1 to 2,participants were categorized into four groups of Normal-Normal,Low-Normal,Normal-Low,and *** events,including heart disease and stroke,were recorded using a self-reported questionnaire during Waves 3 and 4 *** proportional hazards models were used to investigate the association between muscle strength changes and CVD incidence after multivariable *** ratios(HRs)and 95%confidence intervals(95%CIs)were estimated with the Normal-Normal group as the ***:A total of 1164 CVD cases were identified among 6608 *** to participants with sustained normal muscle strength,the CVD risks increased progressively across groups of the Low-Normal(HR=1.20,95%CI:1.01-1.43),the Normal-Low(HR=1.35,95%CI:1.14-1.60),and the Low-Low(HR=1.76,95%CI:1.49-2.07).Similar patterns were observed for the significant associations between muscle strength status and the incidence risks of heart disease and *** analyses showed that the significant associations between CVD and muscle strength changes were consistent across age,sex,and body mass index(BMI)***:The study found that muscle strength changes were associated with CVD *** suggests that continuous tracking of muscle status may be helpful in screening cardiovascular risk.

Dietary supplementation of laminarin improves the reproductive performance of sows and the growth of suckling piglets

Title: Integrating Consistent Individualized Carbohydrate-Controlled Anti- Inflammatory nutritional Plan (C-ICAN) in the Management of Prader-Willi Syndrome: A Case Report. Prader–Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by a loss of function of specific genes on chromosome 15. Patients with this disease present unique challenges in management, particularly regarding obesity and nutritional regulation as the disease symptoms change depending on the age of the patient and the phase of the disease. These challenges pose critical stressors to caregivers and their families. We present a case report of a 5-year-old Caucasian male diagnosed with PWS, exhibiting failure to thrive and uncontrolled weight gain. His caregiver was his elderly grandmother who, by her own admission, was ill-equipped to deal with the patient’s physical symptoms and his behavior in response to dietary restrictions. Through a multidisciplinary approach involving medical nutrition therapy (MNT) involving the implementation of a Consistent Individualized Carbohydrate-Controlled Anti-Inflammatory nutritional plan (C-ICAN), growth hormone supplementation, and behavioral interventions patient markedly improved physically and emotionally.

Prospects of sea buckthorn(Hippophae rhamnoides L.) polysaccharides: preparation， structural characterization， and bioactivities diversity

Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) is a natural homologous substance of medicine and food. Polysaccharide， as one of its primary active components， has very superior biological activity and can be used as a dietary supplement for functional foods， with good commercial prospects. Although initial progress has been made in the study of sea buckthorn polysaccharides， related studies have been fragmented and lacked systematic and generalization. This manuscript presents a critical analysis and systematic summary of the extraction and purification methods， structural characterization and physicochemical properties， biological activity and potential mechanisms， and structure-activity relationships of sea buckthorn polysaccharides. Accumulating evidence has indicated that sea buckthorn polysaccharides， which were widely prepared by water extraction and column chromatography purifications， exhibited exhibit superior biological activities in vitro and in vivo， including antioxidant， immunomodulatory， anti-inflammatory， hepatorenal protective， antibacterial， antiviral， and prebiotic activities. After analysis， it was concluded that there is a correlation between the relevant activities of sea buckthorn polysaccharides and that the structure of sea buckthorn polysaccharides has a great influence on their biological activity. We reviewed the challenges and limitations of sea buckthorn polysaccharides， summarized the critical aspects， and provided suggestions for potential breakthroughs in the research and application of sea buckthorn polysaccharide.
