In the present study, we reconstructed upper airway and soft palate models of 3 obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome（OSAHS） patients with nasal obstruction. The airflow distribution and movement of the soft palate before and after surgery were described by a numerical simulation method. The curative effect of nasal surgery was evaluated for the three patients with OSAHS. The degree of nasal obstruction in the 3 patients was improved after surgery. For 2 patients with mild OSAHS, the upper airway resistance and soft palate displacement were reduced after surgery. These changes contributed to the mitigation of respiratory airflow limitation. For the patient with severe OSAHS, the upper airway resistance and soft palate displacement increased after surgery, which aggravated the airway obstruction. The effcacy of nasal surgery for patients with OSAHS is determined by the degree of improvement in nasal obstruction and whether the effects on the pharynx are beneficial. numerical simulation results are consistent with the polysomnogram（PSG） test results, chief complaints, and clinical findings, and can indirectly reflect the degree of nasal patency and improvement of snoring symptoms, and further,provide a theoretical basis to solve relevant clinical problems.

Abstract Lesion of ossicular chain is a common ear disease impairing the sense of hearing. A comprehensive numerical model of human ear can provide better understanding of sound transmission. In this study, we propose a three-dimensional finite element model of human ear that incorporates the canal, tympanic membrane, ossicular bones, middle ear suspensory ligaments/muscles, middle ear cavity and inner ear fluid. numerical analysis is conducted and employed to predict the effects of middle ear cavity, malleus handle defect, hypoplasia of the long process of incus, and stapedial crus defect on sound transmission. The present finite element model is shown to be reasonable in predicting the ossicular mechanics of human ear.

In numerical modelling,selection of the constitutive model is a critical factor in predicting the actual response of a *** use of oversimplified or inadequate models may not be sufficient to reproduce the actual geomaterial *** selection is especially relevant in the case of aniso-tropic rocks,and particularly for shales and slates,whose behaviour may be affected,*** stability in geothermal or oil and gas production *** this paper,an alternative anisotropic constitutive model has been implemented in the finite element method software CODE_BRIGHT,which is able to account for the anisotropy of shales and slates in terms of both deformability and *** this purpose,a transversely isotropic version of the generalised Hooke’s law is adopted to represent the stiffness anisotropy,while a nonuniform scaling of the stress tensor is introduced in the plastic model to represent the strength ***,a detailed approach has been proposed to determine the model parameters based on the stressestrain results of laboratory ***,numerical analyses are performed to model uniaxial and triaxial tests on Vaca Muerta shale,Bossier shale and slate from the northwest of Spain(NW Spain slate).The experimental data have been recovered from the literature in the case of the shale and,in the case of the slate,performed by the authors in terms of stress-strain curves and strengths.A good agreement can be generally observed between numerical and experi-mental results,hence showing the potential applicability of the approach to actual case ***,the presented constitutive model may be a promising approach for analysing the anisotropic behaviour of rocks and its impact on well stability or other relevant geomechanical problems in aniso-tropic rocks.

Peristalsis of Carreau-Yasuda fluid is investigated. analysis is carried out in the presence of velocity slip and convective boundary conditions. Thermal conductivity of the fluid is taken to be temperature dependent. Lubrication analysis is used in the formulation of the problem. Resulting nonlinear system of equations is solved numerically. Impact of embedded parameters on the quantities of interest is examined through graphs and tables. Comparison of the behavior of the Carreau-Yasuda, Carreau and Newtonian fluid models is presented. Results show that the heat transfer rate at the wall for the Carreau fluid model is large when compared with the Newtonian or the Carreau-Yasuda fluid model. Also the heat transfer rate at the wall decreases with increase in the velocity slip and variable thermal conductivity parameters. Further, an increase in the Biot number reduces the fluid temperature by a considerable amount.

A three-dimensional numerical model is proposed for modeling the TP transport in the Horizontal Subsurface Flow （HSSF） and Wavy subsurface Flow （WSSF） constructed wetland in this article. Both numerical simulations and physical experiments indicate that the removal efficiency of WSSF is higher than that of HSSF. The difference ofperforrnance in removing pollutants, e.g., Total Phosphorus （TP）, between HSSF and WSSF is numerically analyzed from three interactive aspects, that is, the hydraulic behavior, the substrate and the plant roots. It is shown that the dead zone volume in WSSF is smaller than in HSSF with less short circuiting. The soil in the top layer is more used in WSSF than in HSSF. The TP uptake by the plant roots in WSSF is higher than that in HSSF.

Based on mesoscopic damage mechanics, numerical code RFPA2D （dynamic edition） was developed to analyze the influence of tunnel reinforcing on failure process of surrounding rock under explosive stress waves. The results show that the propagation phenomenon of stress wave in the surrounding rock of tunnel and the failure process of surrounding rock under explosive stress waves are reproduced realistically by using numerical code RFPA2O; from the failure process of surrounding rock, the place at which surrounding rock fractures is transferred because of tunnel reinforcing, and the rockfall and collapse caused by failure of surrounding rock are restrained by tunnel reinforcing; furthermore, the absolute values of peak values of major principal stress, and the minimal principal stress and shear stress at center point of tunnel roof are reduced because of tunnel reinforcing, and the displacement at center point of runnel roof is reduced as well, consequently the stability of tunnel increases.
