Numerical study of the scaling of the maximum kinetic energy per unit length for imploding Z-pinch liner

Numerical computation based on a zero-dimensional thin-plasma-shell model has been carried out to study the scaling of the maximum kinetic energy per unit length, the current amplitude and the compression ratio for the imploding Z-pinch liner driven by peaked current pulses. A dimensionless scaling constant of 0.9 with an error less than 10{%} is extracted at the optimal choice of the current and liner parameters. Deviation of the chosen experimental parameter from the optimal exerts a minor influence on the kinetic energy for wider-shaped and slower-decaying pulses, but the influence becomes significant for narrower-shaped and faster-decaying pulses. The computation is in reasonable agreement with experimental data from the Z, Saturn, Blackjack 5 and Qiangguang-I liners.

Some physical characteristics of foilless diodes are obtained and analysed by numerical simulations. Relations between diode current and configuration parameters, i.e. diode voltage and external magnetic field, are investigated. Employing these relations and assuming that the external magnetic field is strong enough, the diode current can be approximately written as Ib = (7.5/x)(x+(0.81?x)/(1+0.7Ld2/δr))(γ02/3?1)3/2, in which Ld is the Anode–Cathode (AK) gap, Rc the outer radius of cathode and Rp the radius of drifting tube; x = ln (Rp/Rc), δr = Rp?Rc. This expression is comparatively accurate for different configuration parameters and voltages; results obtained from this expression are consistent with that of numerical simulations within an error of 10%.

Frequency conversion of probe electromagnetic wave induced by relativistic ionization front is theoretically analysed based on ray-tracing equations in different regimes. Downshifting as well as upshifting in frequency produced by the front is predicted. The reflected and transmitted angles can be also dramatically changed in certain cases.

In this paper, the finite difference method is used to develop the Fortran software MCHII. The physical process in which the electromagnetic signal is generated by the interaction of nuclear-explosion-induced Compton currents with the geomagnetic field is numerically simulated. The electromagnetic pulse waveforms below the burst point are investigated. The effects of the height of burst, yield and the time-dependence of γ-rays are calculated by using the MCHII code. The results agree well with those obtained by using the code CHAP.
