Invasive black spiny-tailed iguanas(Ctenosaura similis)on Gasparilla Island,florida,USA

The native range of Ctenosaura similis extends from southern Mexico through Panama. From an initial introduction of 3 animals in 1979, the species now numbers in the thousands on Gasparilla Island in southwest Florida. In response to complaints of property damage from residents and threats to native species, local officials and the US Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services began a removal program in 2008. Through 2011, trappers removed 9467 ctenosaurs. The number removed declined from 32 iguanas/day in 2008 to 1.9 iguanas/day in 2011 despite no easing of the control effort. We necropsied 2757 ctenosaurs to document aspects of their natural history. Females outnumbered males overall, although the largest size class (>300 mm snout-vent length) included 32 males and just 2 females. Reproduction was seasonal. We found oviducal eggs in females from early Apr to early Jun, approximately 2 months later than C. similis in its native range. We trapped hatchlings from late Jul to early Oct coincident with the summer rainy season. Clutch size increased with female body size, with 62 being the largest clutch size recorded. In general, the biology of the invasive population on Gasparilla Island resembles native C. similis populations in Central America, except for the lack of large individuals. We suggest that shorter day length and colder temperatures create environmental conditions that are suboptimal for individual growth compared to those in the native range.

Optimization of Adaptive Transit Signal Priority Using Parallel Genetic Algorithm

Optimization of adaptive traffic signal timing is one of the most complex problems in traffic control systems. This paper presents an adaptive transit signal priority （TSP） strategy that applies the parallel genetic algorithm （PGA） to optimize adaptive traffic signal control in the presence of TSP. The method can optimize the phase plan, cycle length, and green splits at isolated intersections with consideration for the performance of both the transit and the general vehicles. A VISSIM （VISual SIMulation） simulation testbed was developed to evaluate the performance of the proposed PGA-based adaptive traffic signal control with TSP. The simulation results show that the PGA-based optimizer for adaptive TSP outperformed the fully actuated NEMA control in all test cases. The results also show that the PGA-based optimizer can produce TSP timing plans that benefit the transit vehicles while minimizing the impact of TSP on the general vehicles.

Effects of Conservation Tillage on Total and Aggregated Soil Organic Carbon in the Andes

Many Andisols of the Andes have been disturbed by traditional potato-based rotation agriculture disrupting soil structure, water retention capacity and organic matter content. This study was undertaken to investigate the contribution of conservation farming technology or reduced tillage in potato-based rotations in the Colombian Andes in order to rehabilitate total and aggregated soil organic C in disturbed organic matter-rich Andisols. Soils were sampled from farms with 7-year of reduced tillage and farms with conventional farming practices. Ultrasound energy was applied to samples to disrupt aggregation and total soil C was determined in order to investigate the amount of carbon held inside the aggregates of different soil size classes. Results indicated that reduced tillage in potato-based crop rotations increased the soil C concentration and average C content in the whole profile (≈117 cm depth) by 50 and 33% (1636 t C ha?1 vs. 1224 t C ha?1), respectively, as compared to conventional farming practices. Carbon content increased 177% in the subsoil (A2 horizon, 78 -117 cm depth, from 215 to 596 t?ha?1), although most of the soil C was in the A1 horizon (between 0 -78 cm average thickness, 1097 t?ha?1). These increases show that reduced tillage enhances C stores in Andisols which are already high in organic matter. In addition, C in aggregates represented more than 80% of the total organic matter and it was positively affected by conservation practices. Development of countermeasures to effectively improve pedestrian safety in low-income areas

In recent years, many departments of transportation in the US have invested more resources to enhance pedestrian safety. However, there is still a need to effectively and systematically address pedestrian safety issues in low-income areas. Statistics show that pedestrians are fatally injured at disproportionately higher rates in the nation's poorer neighborhoods. Low-income areas often are sectioned by high-volume/high-speed arterials, which compound the problem. In this study, pedestrian-vehicle crash data in lowincome areas were analyzed from two aspects: how demographic factors, road environment, and land use types influence pedestrian crash occurrence(based on frequency data)and how demographic and other factors influence severity in a pedestrian crash(based on severity data). The crash frequency modeling results show that major influential variables for higher pedestrian crash frequency include four demographic factors(proportions of older adults, commuters using public transit or biking, people with low education level,and zero-car ownership), three road environmental factors(densities of traffic signals and bus stops and proportion of higher-speed roads), and three land use factors(densities of discount stores, convenience stores, and fast-food restaurants). The injury severity modeling results show that a dark-not lighted condition is the most influential variable for severe injury pedestrian crashes, and the number of impaired pedestrians and aggressive drivers also greatly increases the probability of severe injury. Based on the analysis results,this paper makes specific recommendations for both engineering countermeasures and pedestrian safety education/outreach plans that resonate with a given area's demographics to effectively improve pedestrian safety in low-income areas.

Effects of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria and N Source on Plant Growth and N and P Uptake by Tomato Grown on Calcareous Soils

Introducing specific microorganisms into the soil ecological system is an important strategy for improving nutrient use *** pot experiments were conducted in the greenhouse from December 3, 2012 to January 25, 2013(Experiment 1) and March 11 to April 23, 2013(Experiment 2) to evaluate the effect of nitrogen(N) source and inoculation with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria(PGPR) on plant growth and N and phosphorus(P) uptake in tomato(Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) grown on calcareous soils from South florida, *** included urea, controlled release urea(a controlled release fertilizer, CRF) each at low and high N rates and with or without inoculation of PGPR.A mixture of PGPR strains Bacillus amyloliquefaciens IN937 a and Bacillus pumilus T4 was applied to the soil during growing periods of *** with PGPR inoculation increased plant height compared to treatments without PGPR in both *** with PGPR increased shoot dry weight and shoot N uptake for the same N rate and N *** both experiments, only at high N rate, CRF and urea treatments with PGPR had significantly(P < 0.05)greater shoot biomass than those without *** at high N rate, CRF treatment with PGPR significantly increased shoot N uptake by 39.0% and 10.3% compared to that without PGPR in Experiments 1 and 2, ***, presence of PGPR in the soil increased shoot P uptake for all treatments in Experiment 1 and for most treatments in Experiment *** Experiment 1, only at low N rate, CRF treatment with PGPR significantly increased shoot P uptake compared with that without *** Experiment2, a significant increase in shoot P uptake by inoculation of PGPR was only observed in CRF treatment at high N *** from this study indicate that inoculation with PGPR may increase plant growth and N and P uptake by tomato grown on calcareous ***, the effect of PGPR varied and was influenced by many factors such as N source, N rate

AIM:To study functional brain abnormalities in patients with hypertensive retinopathy(HR)and to discuss the pathophysiological mechanisms of HR by fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations(fALFFs)***:Twenty HR patients and 20 healthy controls(HCs)were respectively *** age,gender,and educational background characteristics of the two groups were *** functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI)scanning,the subjects’spontaneous brain activity was evaluated with the fALFF *** operating characteristic(ROC)curve analysis was used to classify the ***,we used Pearson’s correlation analysis to explore the relationship between fALFF values in specific brain regions and clinical behaviors in patients with ***:The brain areas of the HR group with lower fALFF values than HCs were the right orbital part of the middle frontal gyrus(RO-MFG)and right lingual *** contrast,the values of fALFFs in the left middle temporal gyrus(MTG),left superior temporal pole(STP),left middle frontal gyrus(MFG),left superior marginal gyrus(SMG),left superior parietal lobule(SPL),and right supplementary motor area(SMA)were higher in the HR *** results of a t-test showed that the average values of fALFFs were statistically significantly different in the HR group and HC group(P<0.001).The fALFF values of the left middle frontal gyrus in HR patients were positively correlated with anxiety scores(r=0.9232;P<0.0001)and depression scores(r=0.9682;P<0.0001).CONCLUSION:fALFF values in multiple brain regions of HR patients are abnormal,suggesting that these brain regions in HR patients may be dysfunctional,which may help to reveal the pathophysiological mechanisms of HR.

Sodium-ion batteries(SIBs)are required to possess long cycle life when used for large-scale energy *** polyanionic Na_(4)MnV(PO_(4))_(3)(NMVP)reveals good cyclic stability due to its unique three-dimensional(3D)frame structure,but it still faces the challenge of interfacial degradation in practical *** this work,NASICON-type Na_(1.3)Al_(0.7)Ti_(1.3)(PO_(4))_(3)(NATP)was deposited on the surface of NMVP to promote interface stability by surface modification and gradient *** a result,the optimized NMVP@2%NATP released a capacity retention of 44.8%after 1000 cycles at 5 C,much higher than that of the initial NMVP(28.9%).The enhanced electrochemical performance was mainly attributed to NATP coating acting as a fast ion transport carrier and physical barrier,significantly facilitating the Na^(+)diffusion and isolating side reaction at the electrode/electrolyte *** the other hand,Ti_(4)^(+)and Al^(3+)cations from the NATP were partially doped inside the NMVP surface to boost the transport of Na^(+),and the perfect lattice matching of NVMP and NATP improved the interface and structural stability accompanying long *** work demonstrated the effectiveness of surface modification with high lattice match material and provided new perspectives for high energy density solid-state SIBs.
