Replacing the human driver:An objective benchmark for occluded pedestrian detection

Early detection of vulnerable road users is a crucial requirement for autonomous vehicles to meet and exceed the object detection capabilities of human *** of the most complex outstanding challenges is that of partial occlusion where a target object is only partially available to the sensor due to obstruction by another foreground object.A number of leading pedestrian detection benchmarks provide annotation for partial occlusion,however each benchmark varies greatly in their definition of the occurrence and severity of *** demonstrates that a high degree of subjectivity is used to classify occlusion level in these cases and occlusion is typically categorized into 2–3 broad categories such as“partially”and“heavily”*** addition,many pedestrian instances are impacted by multiple inhibiting factors which contribute to non-detection such as object scale,distance from camera,lighting variations and adverse *** can lead to inaccurate or inconsistent reporting of detection performance for partially occluded pedestrians depending on which benchmark is *** research introduces a novel,objective benchmark for partially occluded pedestrian detection to facilitate the objective characterization of pedestrian detection *** is carried out on seven popular pedestrian detection models for a range of occlusion levels from 0%–99%to demonstrate the impact of progressive levels of partial occlusion on pedestrian *** show that the proposed benchmark provides more objective,fine grained analysis of pedestrian detection algorithms than the current state of the art.

Sodium-ion batteries are expected to be more affordable for stationary applications than lithium-ion batteries,while still offering sufficient energy density and operational capacity to power a significant segment of the battery *** this,thermal runaway explosions associated with organic electrolytes have led to concerns regarding the safety of sodium-ion *** electrolytes,ionic liquids are promising because they have negligible vapor pressure and show high thermal and electrochemical *** review discusses the safety contributions of these electrolyte properties for high-temperature *** ionic liquids provide thermal stability while at the same time promoting high-voltage window battery ***,apart from cycle stability,there is an additional safety feature attributed to modified ultra-concentrated ionic liquid *** these contributions,the following have been discussed,heat sources and thermal runaway mechanisms,thermal stability,the electrochemical decomposition mechanism of stable cations,and the ionic transport mechanism of ultra-concentrated ionic liquid *** addition,the contributions of hybrid electrolyte systems consisting of ionic liquids with either organic carbonate or polymers are also *** thermal stability of ionic liquids is found to be the main contributor to cell safety and cycle *** high-temperature applications where electrolyte safety,capacity,and cycle stability are important,highly concentrated ionic liquid electrolyte systems are potential solutions for sodium-ion battery applications.

Nanometer-sized manganese oxides materials are one of the focuses for scientists in this field and novel properties may be found, due to quantum confinement effects. The most widely used cathode materials in primary alkaline batteries nsutite (γ-MnO2) is often described as an intergrowth of pyrolusite and ramsdellite tunnel structures. Our research concerns the preparation, structures, and properties of nanometer-sized nsutite with the longest diameter sizes of about 30-40 nm from basic systems, instead of traditional nsutite synthesized in the acidic environments. Flat perfect crystal surfaces of nanometer-sized nsutite characterized by FESEM show that there are pure and fewer cation vacancies et al defects on the surface of the frameworks, further proved by IR, TG, and BET methods. CV experiment results showed that the currents at -240 mV, corresponding to the homogeneous reduction from Mn4+ to Mn3+ , were twice of traditional samples from acidic environments, due to the small particle size, fewer cation vacancies, and larger numbers of Mn4+ ions on the surfaces.

Lessons Learned from Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) Systems in the United States

This paper is the result of a survey and analyses of available data from 204 Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) sites in the United States. This ASR site survey included all active and inactive sites and collected both operational and construction details. The inactive sites are of particular interest here because these are the projects from which valuable lessons can often be learned. The intent of this paper is to examine the reasons for those projects that are terminated. Statistical analyses indicated that there were factors associated with terminated ASR projects: general geographic location (e.g., region), operational issue, storage cycle, casing material, and injection formation. The injection formation involves local geology and aquifer characteristics (i.e., whether the aquifer is leaky and/or unconfined, and if water can be displaced to surface water bodies or adjacent aquifers). Operational problems associated with inactive projects include well clogging, metals mobilization, a low percentage of recovery for injected water, and disinfection byproducts in the recovered water.

Combinative approach of transzonular triamcinolonemoxifloxacin and perioperative drops to minimize postoperative complications of cataract surgery

AIM: To investigate the effectiveness of combinationtherapy with transzonular triamcinolone-moxifloxacin andconventional perioperative drops in reducing postoperativecomplications of cataract surgery. METHODS: Electronic medical records of cataractsurgery patients (single surgeon) were reviewed fromJanuary 2018 to September 2021. The rate of postoperativecomplications including prolonged and/or recurrentpostoperative inflammation, endophthalmitis, cystoid macularedema (CME), and intraocular pressure (IOP) was comparedbetween the patients receiving combinative therapy andpatients receiving drops only. RESULTS: Totally 596 patients and 1057 eyes(Combinative-Therapy group 493 and Drop-Only group 564)were included in this study. Using combination therapyreduced the relative risk of postoperative inflammationby 26.9% (16.6% Combinative-Therapy vs 22.7% Drop-Only, P=0.013). The incidence of endophthalmitis was 0in Combinative-Therapy group vs 0.5% in Drop-Only group(relative risk reduction 100%), although not statisticallysignificant (P=0.10). The incidence of severe IOP spikeswas not significantly different between Combinative-Therapy (2.4%) and Drop-Only (1.6%) groups (P=0.33).The relative risk of postoperative CME was 51.4% less inthree months follow up visit in Combinative-Therapy group,although not statistically significant (P=0.07). The visualoutcome 1-month postop. (best corrected visual acuity) wassignificantly better in Combinative-Therapy (logMAR 0.10)compared to Drop-Only (logMAR 0.14) groups (P=0.02) whilethe baseline visual acuity was not significantly different. CONCLUSION: The combinative approach oftranszonular triamcinolone-moxifloxacin plus perioperativeeyedrops is an effective method to minimize postoperativeinflammation, with better visual outcomes. It couldpotentially reduce the risk of postoperative endophthalmitisand CME (near-significant P-values;larger studies couldanalyze better considering low incidence).

Analytical Modeling and Experimental Validation of Electromagnetic Field Radiated by In-house PLC Lines

Broadband PLC （power line communication） technology is a main factor of the development of digital convergence in the indoor network. It uses the already existing power cable infrastructure for communication purposes. The EM （electromagnetic） field radiating from the cable could, however, disturb other communication systems, and thus should be evaluated. The MoM （method of moment） and the FEM （finite element method） have been studied to estimate the EVI field emitted from the power cable. However, the M oM is difficult to treat the dielectric material of the cable and the FEM is time consuming. This paperpresents a new approach to estimate the radiated EM fields caused by PLC sy stems from the CM current along the cable, based on the transmission line theory. The proposed model has the advantage of using the measured primary parameters of the cable. An experimental analysis of the EM radiation distribution is also presented. A comparison showed that the model results agree quite well with the measurements performed in this study.

Data Envelopment Analysis Model for Assessment of Safety and Security of Intermodal Transportation Facilities

Following September 11, 2001, numerous security policies have been created which have caused a number of unique challenges in planning for transportation networks. Transportation policy and funding to improve the transportation infrastructure has historically been addressed as individual modes not as intermodal transportation. As a consequence of this inopportune allocation, it is now apparent that the transportation modes are disconnected and have unequal levels of security and efficiency. Improved intermodal connectivity has therefore been identified as one of the main challenges to achieve a safer, secure, and productive transportation network. Tools need to be refined for collaboration and consensus building to serve as catalysts for efficient transportation solutions. In this study, a mathematical model using data envelopment analysis (DEA) was developed and investigated to assess the safety and security of intermodal transportation facilities. The model identifies the best and worst performers by assessing several safety and security-related variables. The DEA model can assess the efficiency level of safety and security of intermodal facilities and identify potential solutions for improvement. The DEA methodology presented is general in its framework and can be applied to any network of intermodal transportation systems. Availability of credible data, complemented with DEA methodology will help in management decisions making concrete safety and security decisions for intermodal transportation facilities.

Tai Chi in Parkinson’s Disease: A Preliminary Randomized, Controlled, and Rater-Blinded Study

Background: Given the limited benefits of current treatments for Parkinson’s disease (PD), inter-ventions that might provide supplementary benefits would be of value. The traditional Chinese medicine practice of Tai Chi has been said to improve some aspects of PD, particularly imbalance. Methods: Preliminary randomized, controlled, and rater-blinded clinical trial of Tai Chi, focusing on its effects on global motor, daily function, mood and quality of life. Subjects continued their standard medical therapy and were randomly assigned to Tai Chi (16 weekly classes, expert trainer, practice at home between classes) or no Tai Chi (control group) in a 2:1 ratio. The primary outcome measure was the total motor score of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and this was scored by an experienced rater who was blinded to the treatment assignment. The same rater scored the Schwab and England Activities of Daily Living Scale. The patient-completed Geriatric Depression Scale, PD (quality of life) Questionnaire-39, and fall diary were also analyzed. Results: 44 subjects participated with 29 assigned to Tai Chi and 15 serving as controls. Tai Chi was well-tolerated. Seven subjects withdrew prior to completion (2 from Tai Chi, 5 from control). We found no significant difference between treatment groups in the change in scores from baseline to end of intervention for any of the scales. Trends toward a benefit of Tai Chi were observed for individual UPDRS items (depression, finger tapping, hand movements, posture). Conclusions: Tai Chi does not appear to improve global measures in patients with PD. The practice may have benefits for PD, but these appear to be largely restricted to specific motor tasks and perhaps mood rather than being a global functional response. More study is needed to clarify and establish efficacy.

Interannual and Decadal Variability of Landfalling Tropical Cyclones in the Southeast Coastal States of the United States

The interannual variability of the atlantic tropical cyclone (TC) frequency is well known. Separately, recent studies have also suggested that a much longer, multidecadal (40-60 year) trend might be emerging from the recent increase in atlantic TC activity. However, the overall structure of the intrinsic frequencies (or temporal modes) of atlantic TC activity is not yet known. The focus of this study is to systematically an-alyze the intrinsic frequencies of atlantic TC activity using hurricane and tropical storm landfall data collec-ted along the southeast coast(SEC) of the United States, Based on an Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) analysis of the frequency of landfall TCs along the SEC from 1887-1999, we have found that atlantic TC activity has four primary, temporal modes. The interannual and multidecadal modes reported in the published literature are two such modes. After identifying all primary modes, the relative importance of each mode and its physical cause can be analyzed. For example, the most energetic mode is the interannual mode (2-7 year period). This mode is known to be associated with the 2-7 year El Nino/ La Ni na cycle. The average number of annual landfalling TCs along (he SEC decreased by 24% during El Nino years, but did not show significant increase during weak and moderate La Nina years. However, intense La Nina years were generally associated with more than average landfalling TCs along the SEC. The effects of El Nino and La Nina also became more significant when only hurricanes were considered. The significance of the effects of El Nino and La Nina on landfalling TCs and hurricanes in different US southeast coastal states showed significant differences.
