Synthesizing active and durable cubic ceria catalysts(<6 nm)for fast dehydrogenation of bio-polyols to carboxylic acids coproducing green H_(2)

Dehydrogenation is considered as one of the most important industrial applications for renewable *** ceria-based catalysts are known to display promising dehydrogenation performances in this *** particle size(>20 nm)and less surface defects,however,hinder further application of ceria ***,an alternative strategy involving lactic acid(LA)assisted hydrothermal method was developed to synthesize active,selective and durable cubic ceria of<6 nm for dehydrogenation *** studies of growth mechanism revealed that,the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in LA molecule synergistically manipulate the morphological evolution of ceria *** groups determine the cubic shape and particle size,while hydroxyl groups promote compositional transformation of ceria precursors into CeO_(2) ***,enhanced oxygen vacancies(Vo)on the surface of CeO_(2) were obtained owing to continuous removal of O species under reductive *** CeO_(2) catalysts synthesized by the LA-assisted method,immobilized with bimetallic PtCo clusters,exhibit a record high activity(TOF:29,241 h^(-1))and Vo-dependent synergism for dehydrogenation of bio-derived polyols at 200℃.We also found that quenching Vo defects at air atmosphere causes activity loss of PtCo/CeO_(2) *** regenerate Vo defects,a simple strategy was developed by irradiating deactivated catalysts using hernia *** outcome of this work will provide new insights into manufacturing durable catalyst materials for aqueous phase dehydrogenation applications.

Materials are the building blocks of various functional *** Moore’s Law approaching Si’s physical limits,traditional semiconductor-based monolithic three-dimensional(M3D)integrated circuits always suffer from the issues,including electrical performance(carrier scattering),chip-overheating(low heat conductivity),electromagnetic ***,two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides(2D TMDs)inherit the atomically-thin thickness of 2D materials and exhibit outstanding natures,such as smooth flatness(excellent compatibility),electronic property(thickness below 1 nm),absence of dangling bonds(decreasing carrier scattering),making them highly promising for next-generation functional devices in comparison with traditional bulk *** to now,2D TMD-based transistors have already exhibited the feasibility of replacing conventional one in terms of ***,the technology of large-area 2D TMDs films has been greatly successful,which lays the foundation for the fabrication of scalable 2D TMD-based ***,the scalable devices based on 2D TMDs also show the prospects of realizing ultra-high-density M3D integrated circuits owing to the presence of outstanding ***,we focus some thriving research areas and provide a systematic review of recent advances in the field of scalable electronic and optoelectronic devices based on 2D TMDs,including large-area synthesis,property modulation,large-scale device applications,and multifunctional device *** research in 2D TMDs has clearly exhibited the tremendous promise for scalable diversified *** addition,scalable 2D TMD-based devices in terms of mass production,controllability,reproducibility,and low-cost have also been highlighted,showing the importance and benefits in modern ***,we summarize the remaining challenges and discuss the future directions of scalable 2D TMDs devices.

Anthropogenic Influence on Decadal Changes in Concurrent Hot and Dry Events over China around the Mid-1990s

The frequency and duration of observed concurrent hot and dry events(HDEs) over China during the growing season(April–September) exhibit significant decadal changes across the mid-1990s. These changes are characterized by increases in HDE frequency and duration over most of China, with relatively large increases over southeastern China(SEC), northern China(NC), and northeastern China(NEC). The frequency of HDEs averaged over China in the present day(PD,1994–2011) is double that in the early period(EP, 1964–81);the duration of HDEs increases by 60%. Climate experiments with the Met Office Unified Model(MetUM-GOML2) are used to estimate the contributions of anthropogenic forcing to HDE decadal changes over China. Anthropogenic forcing changes can explain 60%–70% of the observed decadal changes,suggesting an important anthropogenic influence on HDE changes over China across the mid-1990s. Single-forcing experiments indicate that the increase in greenhouse gas(GHG) concentrations dominates the simulated decadal changes,increasing the frequency and duration of HDEs throughout China. The change in anthropogenic aerosol(AA) emissions significantly decreases the frequency and duration of HDEs over SEC and NC, but the magnitude of the decrease is much smaller than the increase induced by GHGs. The changes in HDEs in response to anthropogenic forcing are mainly due to the response of climatological mean surface air temperatures. The contributions from changes in variability and changes in climatological mean soil moisture and evapotranspiration are relatively small. The physical processes associated with the response of HDEs to GHG and AA changes are also revealed.

High Thermal Conductivity of Carboxyl-rich Carbon/Polyethylene Glycol Composites for Enhanced Photothermal Conversion and Latent Heat Storage

Polyethylene glycol(PEG)as phase change material(PCM)and carboxyl-rich carbon(RHTC)with different carboxyl content was introduced to prepare RHTC/PEG *** composites have high thermal conductivity,photothermal conversion ability,and improved the phase change enthalpy of the *** microstructure and thermal properties of the samples were analyzed by various characterization *** promoted the benign growth of PEG crystallinity(110.0%),influenced the phase change enthalpy of PEG,and improved the latent heat storage capacity of *** non-leakage loading of PEG in the composites can be as high as 97 wt%,and the actual phase change enthalpy is 10.7 J/g higher than that of pure PEG,10%higher than the theoretical *** to the heat storage bridge formed between PEG and RHTC,the thermal conductivity of the composites was up to 0.51 W/mK,which was 99.4%higher than that of ***,the introduction of environmentally friendly and low-cost RHTC gives the composites excellent photothermal conversion capability,and its photothermal conversion energy storage efficiency is as high as 90.1%.These results prove that the prepared composites are promising potential candidates in the field of thermal storage and thermal management systems.

Global Change in Agricultural Flash Drought over the 21st Century

Agricultural flash droughts are high-impact phenomena, characterized by rapid soil moisture dry down. The ensuing dry conditions can persist for weeks to months, with detrimental effects on natural ecosystems and crop cultivation. Increases in the frequency of these rare events in a future warmer climate would have significant societal impact. This study uses an ensemble of 10 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project(CMIP) models to investigate the projected change in agricultural flash drought during the 21st century. Comparison across geographical regions and climatic zones indicates that individual events are preceded by anomalously low relative humidity and precipitation, with long-term trends governed by changes in temperature, relative humidity, and soil moisture. As a result of these processes, the frequency of both upperlevel and root-zone flash drought is projected to more than double in the mid-and high latitudes over the 21st century, with hot spots developing in the temperate regions of Europe, and humid regions of South America, Europe, and southern Africa.

Structural performance of flexible freeform panelssubjected to wind loads

An increased number of hurricanes and tornadoes have been recorded worldwide in the last decade,while research efforts to reduce wind-related damage to structures become *** architecture,which focuses on generating complex curved shapes including streamlined shapes,has recently gained *** study focuses on investigating the potential of kerf panels,which have unique flexibility depending on the cut patterns and densities,to generate complex shapes for facades and their performance under wind *** investigate the kerf panel's potential capacity against wind loads,static and dynamic analyses were conducted for two kerf panel types with different cut densities and pre-deformed *** was observed that although solid panels result in smaller displacement amplitudes,stresses,and strains in some cases,the kerf panels allow for global and local cell deformations resulting in stress reduction in various locations with the potential to reduce damage due to overstress in *** the predeformed kerf panels,it was observed that both the overall stress and strain responses in kerf cut arrangements were lower than those of the flat-shaped *** study shows the promise of the use of kerf panels in achieving both design flexibility and performance demands when exposed to service *** that this newly proposed architectural configuration(design paradigm)for facades could revolutionize structural engineering by pushing complex freeform shapes to a standard practice that intertwines aesthetic arguments,building performance requirements,and material design considerations has the potential for significant practical applications.

Simulation and experimental study on the surface morphology and energy lost of the target material under non-overlapping impact of angular particles

In order to further understand the effect of solid impurities on pipeline wall during erosion,the particle impact process without fluid was extracted for specific *** effect of multi-impact particles on the wall of pipeline was studied experimentally and *** this experiment,an improved ejection apparatus was implemented to carry out multi-impacts non-overlapping impingement by rhombic particles made of high speed steel(W18Cr4V)on the AA6061 aluminum alloy plate through changing particle angle,incident angle,orientation angle and impact *** a result,each particle's penetration depth was investigated and particles' rebound trajectory can be described through this experiment as well as surface morphology of the target material after *** ductile damage criterion,shear damage criterion and MSFLD damage criterion were jointly implemented in ABAQUS/CAE software to simulate the whole process of collision which proved to be effective by getting consistent result compared with experimental *** is found that under the condition of continuous non-overlapping impact,the target material produces a small work hardening effect in the impact area by converting kinetic energy of moving particles into internal energy of plate so as to reduce the penetration depth of each impact particle.

Polymer transfer film formation from cryogenic to elevated temperatures

This study reports on the tribological performance of aromatic thermosetting co-polyester(ATSP)and polyether ether ketone(PEEK)-based polymer composite coatings mixed with PTFE *** coatings were tested across a wide temperature range from−180 to 110℃ to simulate the environmental temperatures on Titan,Moon,and Mars,which are of particular interest for NASA’s future exploratory *** experimental setup was developed to conduct the pin-on-disk experiments under dry sliding conditions and extreme temperature and contact *** film formation and its characteristics were found to play significant roles in the tribological performance,and the characteristics of the film were *** XPS and SEM analysis indicated the increase of the PTFE content in the transfer film as the temperature decreased to cryogenic *** coefficient of friction did not follow a linear trend with temperature and was minimum at 110℃ and maximum at−180℃.ATSP coating showed superior performance with lower friction and unmeasurable wear at all temperatures,whereas PEEK coating exhibited maximum wear at 25℃ followed by−180,and 110℃.
