AIM: To investigate the levels of serum soluble intercellular adhesion molecules-1 (sICAM-1) and neutrophilic expression of CD18 in patients with various stages of diabetic retino.athy and to determine their different expression pattern in the development of diabetic retino.athy(DR). METHODS: Levels of serum sICAM-1 and CD18 on the surface of neutrophile were measured in 41 DR patients, they were classified in three subgroups according to the stage of retino.athy as determined by fund's ophthalmoscopy; 10 control subjects were also studied. sICAM-1 were measured by enzyme-linked immuno.orbent assay and CD18 by flow cytometry. RESULTS: The neutrophilic CD18 expression and serum sICAM-1 level were all significantly elevated in all diabetic subgroups compared to control subjects (P no. in sICAM-1. The progression of retino.athy was associated with an increase both in CD18 and in sICAM-1 levels by simple correlation analysis (beta =0.74, Pno.athy (beta =1.04, Pno. ICAM-1. CD18 and ICAM-1 may play different role in the development of diabetic retino.athy.

A suite of elements（Ag,Au,Ba,Bi,Cd,Co,Cr,Cu,Ga,Hf,Hg,Mn,Mo,Ni,Pb,Rb,Sb,Se, Sr,Te and Zn）,total organic carbon（TOC）and pH were analyzed in stream sediment and tailing samples from Um Shashoba area,in order to evaluate Au placer and the sediments being impacted by old mining *** results were examined using statistical,graphical and mapping *** spite of the results revealing that Au and most of the elements in sediments were in general significantly lower than those in tailing,Au was concentrated in the NE and SW parts forming Au *** is remarkably a close association of Au with Hg and Sb;both are useful as pathfinder elements for Au *** of pH could no. control a fate of analyzed elements,whereas TOC and Mn oxides and hydroxides could uptake some elements Au,Ba,Co,Cr,Hg,Ni,and *** results also indicated that the sediments were contaminated by anthropogenic factors causing moderate,strong to very strong pollution with respect to Bi,Se and Te,***,geogenic factors could also contribute elemental enrichment to the drainage system and cause significant toxicity level.

The first objective of this paper is to study the influence of the orthotic device on the maximum values of stresses in knee cartilages by using Ansys Workbench 14.5 software and applying the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on a virtual assembly composed by an orthotic device and osteoarthritic knee (OAK). The second objective consists into quantifying and investigating the no.linear motion of the human knee joint for OAK patients, with and without the orthotic device mounted on OAK, using tools of dynamics stability analysis. The short Lyapuno. Exponents (LEs) are calculated, as measures of human knee and ankle joints stability, based on the experimental time series collected by using the biometrics acquisition system during walking on horizontal and inclined treadmills from a sample of healthy subjects and a sample of patients suffering by OAK disease. The values of LEs obtained for OAK patients are larger on the inclined treadmill than on horizontal treadmill and are larger than those obtained for healthy knees, being associated with more divergence and less stability. The results confirm that the influence of an orthotic device mounted on OAK on its stability is significant, the values obtained for LEs being smaller than those calculated for OAK, and closer to the values of no.mal knees of patients and of healthy subjects.

Roteno.e and 6-hydroxydopamine are two drugs commonly used to generate Parkinson＇s disease animal *** no. only achieve degenerative changes of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra,but also satisfy the requirements for iron ***,few studies have compared the characteristics of these two models by magnetic resonance *** this study,rat models of Parkinson＇s disease were generated by injection of 3 μg roteno.e or 10 μg 6-hydroxydopamine into the right substantia *** 1,2,4,and 6 weeks after injection,coronal whole-brain T2-weighted imaging,transverse whole-brain T2-weighted imaging,and coronal diffusion tensor weighted imaging were conducted to measure fractional anisotropy and T2＊ values at the injury *** fractional anisotropy value on the right side of the substantia nigra was remarkably lower at 6 weeks than at other time points in the roteno.e *** the 6-hydroxydopamine group,the fractional anisotropy value was decreased,but T2＊ values were increased on the right side of the substantia nigra at 1 *** findings confirm that the 6-hydroxydopamine-induced model is suitable for studying dopaminergic neurons over short periods,while the roteno.e-induced model may be appropriate for studying the pathological and physiological processes of Parkinson＇s disease over long periods.

Studies on the mechanism of supergenic dispersion, migration and enrichment of mercuryand other elements in strata-bound ore deposits are of great importance both in theory andin practice. In special reference to the Wanshan mercury ore deposits, this paper discusses themechanism of supergenic migration of mercury and the associated elements lead, zinc, antimony,etc. In this paper the focus of the discussion is placed on the existing forms of mercury, therules governing the migration and enrichment of mercury and associated elements in the processof weathering and some aspects of the simulating experiments on weathering of carbonaterocks. Three existing forms of mercury are recognized in carbonate rocks. The migration of met-cury together with the associated dements in the process of weathering follows the sequence:SiO;→Pb→Hg→Sb→Zu. The results of simulating experiments on weathering of car-bonate rocks show that weathered materials contain more mercury and associated elementsthan the original rocks.

AIM: To explore different roles of TGF-β (transforming growth factor beta) and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs)in hepatic stellate cell proliferation and ***: Hepatic stellate cells were isolated from male Sprague-Dawley rats. Sub-cultured hepatic stellate cells were employed for cell proliferation assay with WST-1 reagent and Western blot analysis with antibody against smooth muscle alpha actin (SMA).RESULTS: The results indicated that TGF-β1 significantly inhibited cell proliferation at concentration as low as 0.1 ng/ml, but both BMP-2 and BMP-4 did no. affect cell proliferation at concentration as high as 10 ng/ml. The effect on hepatic stellate cell trans-differentiation was similar between TGFβ1 and BMPs. However, BMPs was more potent at transdifferentiation of hepatic stellate cells than TGF-β1. In addition, we observed that TGF-β1 transient reduced the abundance of SMA in hepatic stellate ***: TGF-β may be more important in regulation of hepatic stellate cell proliferation while BMPs may be the major cytokines regulating hepatic stellate cell transdifferentiation.

Dust sediments collected from 1995 to 1998 in Beijing, Dunhuang, Inner Mongolia, Kashi, the Kunlun Mountains, Lanzhou, Ningxia, the Taklimakan Desert, and Xi’an, China, were characterized in terms of their physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties. Most aerosols and dust analysed ranged in texture from silty clay to clay loam. Their median particle diameters (Mds) generally ranged between 5 to 63 μm, coinciding with those of loess from central China and the finest sand from no.thwestern China. The dust sediments were characterized by a predominance of SiO2 and Al2O3, followed by K2O. Their SiO2/Al2O3 and K2O/SiO2 molar ratios ranged from 5.17 to 8.43 and from 0.009 to 0.0368, respectively. The mass concentration spectrum during a dust storm showed a single peak, rather than the triple peak generally observed under clear sky conditions. The dominant minerals were chlorite, illite, calcite, and dolomite. These physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties were consistent with those of aeolian soils and loess in western and central China. The results suggest that aerosols and fine-grained fractions of dust sediments collected in no.thern China are mainly composed of soil material transported from the arid and semiarid regions of China and Mongolia by prevailing winds. The rate of deposition and properties of dust falling on eastern China were strongly influenced by meteorological conditions, season, latitude, longitude, and altitude of the sampling sites.

Calcium is a secondary messenger in plant signaling, and its concentration changes spatially and temporally during the course of heat stress. In the present study, potassium antimonate was used to visualize calcium localization in blades of a marine macroalga, the juvenile Laminaria japonica sporophytes under heat stress (25 °C). Result showed that loosely bound calcium was mainly distributed on the cell wall under no.mal conditions (10 °C), and flowed into the cytoplasm when exposed to heat. The simutaneous assay on the antioxidant system changes was performed. Oxidative damage, as measured by generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) malondialdehyde (MDA) content, increased significantly during heat stress, and calcium pretreatment alleviated oxidative damage. The assay on the activities of six antioxidant enzymes demonstrated that their enzymatic activities were inhibited when exposed to heat stress, but Ca2+ pretreatment effectively attenuated the inhibition. Results in the present study inferred that calcium homeostasis plays an essential role in L. japonica sporophyte when exposed to heat, and calcium pretreatment could improve its thermo-tolerance.
