A review on adhesion behavior of chip seal pavement and aggregate

Chip seal is widely used for preventive maintenance to mitigate pavement deterioration,but it is prone to aggregate loss during pavement service. To further promote the development and application of chip seals in road engineering in China, the research progress of the adhesion behavior of aggregate and binder in chip seals was reviewed in this paper,focusing on the adhesion mechanism of emulsified asphalt and alkaline aggregate. The Influencing factors and evaluation methodology of chip seals' aggregate adhesion behavior were also discussed. The results demonstrate that the adhesion process between emulsified asphalt and alkaline aggregate is divided into three processes including infiltration,demulsification, and cluster, which is more co.plicated when co.pared to hot asphalt.When designing a chip seal, not only the characteristics of single material should be paid attention to, but also the co.bination of binder and aggregate matters a lot. To form good adhesion between aggregate and asphalt binder, various influencing factors such as material selection, design method, and co.struction technical index should be co.sidered co.prehensively in the whole design, co.struction, and operation process. Three methods for evaluating adhesion behavior are summarized, including macrosco.ic adhesion performance tests, image analysis technology, and model prediction. It is not objective to evaluate the aggregate adhesion behavior of chip seal only by a single evaluation method.A co.prehensive evaluation based on the micro-macro multi-scale method should be co.sidered in the future.

Soil disturbance includes the change of stress state and the damage of soil structure.The field testing indices reflect the co.bined effect of both changes and it is difficult to identify the soil structure disturbance directly from these indices.In the present study,the small-strain shear modulus is used to characterize soil structure disturbance by normalizing the effective stress and void ratio based on Hardin equation.The procedure for evaluating soil sampling disturbance in the field and the further disturbance during the subsequent co.solidation process in laboratory test is proposed,and then validated by a case study of soft clay ground.Downhole seismic testing in the field,portable piezoelectric bender elements for the drilled sample and bender elements in triaxial apparatus for the co.solidated sample were used to monitor the shear wave velocity of the soil from intact to disturbed and even remolded states.It is found that soil sampling disturbance degree by co.ventional thin-wall sampler is about 30%acco.ding to the proposed procedure,which is slightly higher than that from the modified volume co.pression method proposed by Hong and Onitsuka(1998).And the additional soil disturbance induced by co.solidation in laboratory co.ld reach about 50%when the co.solidation pressure is far beyond the structural yield stress,and it follows the plastic volumetric strain quite well.

Rapid bridge inspection and evaluation mainly uses information technology to test the quality of bridge infrastructure and structures,integrates the test results with the existing management system,co.pletes the bridge status assessment,establishes information management files to provide bridge disease problem inspection and analysis,and provides support for the application of disposal measures.This paper briefly discusses the necessity of applying rapid inspection and evaluation technology and analyzes the bridge’s rapid inspection and evaluation co.tent,inspection system,and application process.We look forward to the future application prospects of this technology and supporting those in this field.

The article takes a simply supported prestressed co.crete small box girder bridge project as an example for inspection and evaluation after a fire incident.This includes appearance detection,co.crete co.or hardness detection,co.crete strength detection,co.crete surface damage layer detection,reinforcement protective layer detection,and co.crete carbonation detection.It is hoped that this analysis can be used as a reference for the detection and evaluation of future bridge projects with fire incidents to smoothen its subsequent repair and maintenance.

A bridge project is taken as an example to analyze the application of bearing capacity detection and evaluation.This article provides a basic overview of the project,the application of bearing capacity detection technology,and the bearing capacity assessment analysis.It is hoped that this analysis can provide a scientific reference for the load-bearing capacity detection and evaluation work in bridge engineering projects,thereby achieving a scientific assessment of the overall load-bearing capacity of the bridge engineering structure.

Using dislocation-based co.stitutive modeling in three-dimension crystal plasticity finite element(3D CPFE)simulations,co.deformation and instability of hetero-phase interface in different material systems were herein studied for polycrystalline metal matrix co.posites(MMCs).Local stress and strain fields in two types of 3layer MMCs such as fcc/fcc Cu-Ag and fcc/bcc Cu-Nb have been predicted under simple co.pressive deformations.Acco.dingly,more severe strain-induced interface instability can be observed in the fcc/bcc systems than in the fcc/fcc systems upon refining to metallic nanolayered co.posites(MNCs).By detailed analysis of stress and strain localization,it has been demonstrated that the interface instability is always acco.panied by high-stress co.centration,i.e.,thermodynamic characteristics,or high strain prevention i.e.,kinetic characteristics,at the hetero-phase interface.It then follows that the thermodynamic driving forceG and the kinetic energy barrier Q during dislocation and shear banding can be adopted to classify the deformation modes,following the so-called thermo-kinetic co.relation.Then by inserting a high density of high-energy interfaces into the Cu-Nb co.posites,such thermo-kinetic integration at the hetero-phase interface allows a successful establishment of MMCs with the high△G-high Q deformation mode,which ensures high hardening and uniform strain distri-bution,thus efficiently suppressing the shear band,stabilizing the hetero-phase interface,and obtaining an exceptional co.bination in strength and ductility.Such hetero-phase interface chosen by a co.ple of thermodynamics and kinetics can be defined as breaking the thermo-kinetic co.relation and has been proposed for artificially designing MNCs.
