Background Anthrax is a non-contagious zoonotic disease caused by the Gram-positive,spore-forming bac-terium Bacillus anthracis.Infection is common in livestock and wild animals such as cattle,goats,sheep,camels,and antelopes.In humans,anthrax may occur after contact with contaminated carcasses or animal products like milk and meat.The best method to prevent anthrax in people is to ensure livestock are vaccinated,which significantly limits the risk of zoonotic spread to humans.However,the rate of vaccination of domesticated animals kept by nomadic pastoralists in West Africa is low.These groups regularly cross over national boundaries with their grazing herds.Nigeria is a country that historically has done comparatively well to contain this public health threat.However,in 2023 several outbreaks of human disease appear linked to the consumption of anthrax-contaminated animal products brought into Nigeria by pastoralists from neighboring countries.Clinical manifestations include skin sores or ulcers,nausea,vomiting,and fever.This article aims to raise awareness of recent outbreaks of anthrax in West Africa and to callfor a renewed focus on measures to combat this neglected public health concern to the region.Main body The imperative to pinpoint pivotal issues relating to the ongoing emergence of anthrax cases in Nigeria cannot be overstated.By delving into the prevalence of anthrax in both livestock and human populations residing along Nigeria's borders,unraveling the genetic diversity and potential sources of B.anthracis strains,and identify-ing the primary animal host(s)responsible for transmission,we stand to enhance our understanding of this critical issue.Furthermore,investigating the multifaceted factors contributing to anthrax transmission,assessing community knowledge and practices,mapping common migratory routes of pastoralists,and formulating targeted interven-tion strategies tailored to the challenges of border communities,are each crucial steps towards effective control andprevention.Conclusion Closing

Study of linseed oil,its biodiesel and xylene as flow improver for nigerian waxy crude oils

In this study,the physicochemical properties of linseed and linseed biofuel were studied and their effect on the flow properties of nigerian waxy crude oil at different volume fractions was investigated.The nigerian wax crude oil was characterized for its specific gravity,API gravity,wax content,pour point and cloud point.The properties of the linseed oil and linseed biodiesel investigated include:density,specific gravity,viscosity,pour point,cloud point and flash point.Upon esterification of the free fatty acid(FFA)contained in the linseed oil reduced from 3.5 to 0.75 and the viscosity of the seed oil reduces from 2169 to 362 mm^(2)/s.The linseed oil and its biodiesel exhibited similar trend of reduced viscosity at higher shear rate,however,linseed biodiesel demonstrated the lowest viscosities,cloud points and pour points owing to reduced fatty contents.The effect of the linseed oil and its biodiesel on the pour point and cloud point of the waxy crude oil was determined;and the performance compared to that of xylene.A rapid drop in the pour point and cloud point was observed with the wax crude pre-heated with 0.1 v/v linseed oil,its biodiesel and xylene.

Martensite decomposition under thermal-mechanical coupling conditions to fabricate an ultrafine-grained Ti6Al4Mo4Zr1W0.2Si alloy

The fabrication of ultrafine-grained microstructures(grain size below 1μm)in titanium alloys is beneficial for improving their mechanical properties at room temperature and medium tempera-tures(400-550°C).However,a long-standing challenge involves the low-cost manufacturing of bulk ultrafine-grained titanium alloys.In this work,we developed a facile strategy through martensite de-composition at thermal-mechanical coupling conditions,to fabricate an equiaxed microstructure in a Ti6Al4Mo4Zr1W0.2Si model alloy with an averageαgrain size of 315±62 nm.The formation of the ultrafine-grained microstructure was because the lattice strain stored in the martensitic initial mi-crostructure enhanced the nucleation rate of dynamic recrystallization,meanwhile,the pinning role of martensite decomposition productsβand(Ti,Zr)_(5)Si_(3)phases suppressed grain coarsening at high tem-peratures.Compared to conventional(α+β)alloys,the tensile strength of this alloy improved by 20%-30%at both room temperature and 550°C,without decreasing its ductility.In situ SEM observations revealed that the ultrafine-grained microstructure would not only suppress dislocation motions but also contribute to the homogenous deformation in the matrix of the material,therefore,it resulted in higher mechanical performance.The research results may be of great significance to the development of next-generation aviation titanium alloys.

Knowledge of aflatoxin contamination in groundnut and the risk of its ingestion among health workers in Ibadan,Nigeria

Objective:To assess the awareness and knowledge of aflatoxin contamination in groundnut and the risk of its ingestion among health workers in Ibadan.Methods:The study was a descriptive cross-sectional study.Study instrument was a semi-structured self administered questionnaire. The respondents were health workers from a public health facility.Results:A total of 417 health workers participated out of which males were 60.2%.The mean age of respondents was(28.0±4.9) years old.Doctors made up 83.0%while others were nurses.95%of the respondents had previous awareness of aflatoxin and class room lectures was the most common source of information(56%).Occupation and religion both showed a significant association with previous awareness of aflatoxin(P<0.05).Knowledge regarding aflatoxin contamination in groundnut and the risk of its ingestion was obtained showing knowledge score range of 0 to 14.In all,80.6%had good scores of 11 to 14.None of the respondents had ever told their patients about the risk of aflatoxin ingestion. Conclusions:There is a need to explore the possibility of incorporating aflatoxin awareness into routine health talk to increase the level of awareness of patients and their relatives.

The Indian meal moth,Plodia interpunctella(Lepidoptera:Pyralidae),a globally distributed storage pest,relies on odors that are emitted from stored foods to select a suitable substrate for oviposition.However,the molecular mechanism underlying the chemical communication between P.interpunctella and its host remains elusive.In this study,130 chemosensory genes were identified from the transcriptomes of 7 P.interpunctella tissues,and the quantitative expression levels of all 56 P.interpunctella odorant receptor genes(PintORs)were validated using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction.The functional characteristics of 5 PintORs with female antennae-biased expression were investigated using 2-electrode voltage clamp recordings in Xenopus laevis oocytes.PintOR23 was found to be specifically tuned to acetophenone.Acetophenone could elicit a significant electrophysiological response and only attracted mated females when compared with males and virgin females.In addition,molecular docking predicted that the hydrogen bonding sites,TRP-335 and ALA-167,might play key roles in the binding of PintOR23 to acetophenone.Our study provides valuable insights into the olfactory mechanism of oviposition substrate detection and localization in P.interpunctella and points toward the possibility of developing eco-friendly odorant agents to control pests of stored products.

Levels of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Healthcare Waste Incinerators’ Bottom Ash from Five County Hospitals in Kenya

Health-care waste contains potentially harmful microorganisms and compounds which can infect and affect hospital patients, healthcare workers, the general public and environment. Therefore, management of health care waste requires safe handling, treatment and disposal procedures. While incineration reduces the volume and quantity of waste for final disposal, it leads to the production of fly and bottom ashes laden with toxic incomplete combustion products such as Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxins, furans and heavy metals. This exposes workers who handle and dispose the bottom ashes, hospital patients, the general public and environment. The goal of this study was to determine the total and individual levels of 16 most prevalent and toxic PAHs. Bottom ash samples were collected from incinerators in five county hospitals in Kenya, namely;Moi-Voi, Narok, Kitale, Makindu and Isiolo. Bottom ash samples were collected over a period of six months from the five hospitals. The samples were then sieved, homogenised and stored at 4°C in amber coloured glass containers. The PAHs were extracted using 30 ml of a hexane-acetone solvent (1:1) mixture by ultrasonication at room temperature (23°C) for 45 minutes. The PAHs were then analyzed with a GC-MS spectrophotometer model (Shimadzu GCMS-QP2010 SE) connected to a computer work station was used for the PAHs analysis. The GC-MS was equipped with an SGE BPX5 GC capillary column (30 m × 0.25 mm × 0.25 μm) for the separation of compounds. Helium was used as the carrier gas at a flow rate of 15.5 ml/minute and 14.5 psi. 1 μl of the sample was injected at 280°C, split mode (10:1). The oven programming was set for a total runtime of 40 minutes, which included: 100°C (2-minute hold);10°C /min rise to 200°C;7°C /min rise to 249°C;3°C /min rise to 300°C (2-minute hold). The interface temperature was set at 290°C. In Central African Republic, edible caterpillars of Imbrasia gender are income of rural populations, present an opportunity to improve food security and belonging to the category of Non-wood forest products. The goal of this study is to document the ecology of caterpillars of genre Imbrasia in relation to its host plants in Boukoko. The questionnaire was addressed to the actors of the collection and consumption of caterpillars in this Commune, to their local knowledge concerning this food resource as well as the plants of their locality on which caterpillars are collected. The survey took place in September to October 2022 and as a general rule, the 120 respondents were elderly people whose age range varied from 35 to 70 years old. Plant samples are collected in their natural environment. Based on local names;herbaria are mounted, plants photographed and samples collected. The types of edible caterpillars have been inventoried in the field in collaboration with the local populations who consume them. Based on local names, the caterpillars are captured manually from morphological traits and then stored in bottles containing 70% ethanol. The specimens were identified. The data was entered into the Excel spreadsheet which also made it possible to produce histograms with the frequencies of the plant species most valued by the different caterpillars. A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was then performed using R software to highlight the correlation between caterpillars and host plants. The main economic importance trees hosting edible caterpillars of Imbrasia gender in Boukoko region are: Entandrophragma cylindricum, Pentaclethra macrophylla, Maesopsis eminii, Albizia ferruginea, Macaranga spinosa, Amphimas ferrugineus, Pentaclethra macrophylla, Racosperma auriculiforme, Eribroma oblonga. Melatonin retards leaf senescence by modulating phytohormone metabolism in stored Chinese flowering cabbage

This paper was conducted to explore the effects of melatonin(MT)on the senescence of stored Chinese flowering cabbage and the potential modulatory mechanisms involved.The physiological findings demonstrated that MT successfully reduced chlorophyll loss and improved the photochemical effectiveness of cabbage leaves.In addition,MT decreased the transcription of senescence-associated genes(BrSAG12)and genes responsible for chlorophyll breakdown.Transcriptome analysis showed that MT-regulated genes were enriched in oxidative phosphorylation,hormone metabolism and signal transduction,and MT treatment reduced the high expression of genes linked to generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS),energy metabolism,phytohormone(abscisic acid(ABA),ethylene(ET),and jasmonic acid(JA))biological synthesis and signal transduction while promoting the activation of genes related to scavenging ROS,energy biosynthesis and plant–pathogen interactions.We emphasized the examination of the potential interaction between phytohormone metabolism and MT.The results showed that the application of MT decreased ABA,ET,and JA levels as well as the expression of their biosynthesis genes,concurrently maintaining higher expression of cytokinin,auxin and gibberellin biosynthetic genes and lower expression of degradation genes.Regulatory networks of transcription factors(TFs)and genes related to ABA,ET and JA metabolism showed that TFs such as DNA-binding One Zinc Finger 5.7(DOF5.7),WRKY40,and homeobox-leucine zipper protein-16(ATHB-16)might play important transcriptional regulatory roles in mediating MT postponed leaf senescence.Taken together,these findings suggested that the postponed senescence of cabbage treated with MT might be ascribed to the regulated oxidative phosphorylation,energy,phytohormone metabolism,and transcription factors.

One decade(2011–2020)of European agricultural water stress monitoring by MSG-SEVIRI:workflow implementation on the Virtual Earth Laboratory(VLab)platform

Cloud computing facilities can provide crucial computing support for processing the time series of satellite data and exploiting their spatio-temporal information content.However,dedicated efforts are still required to develop workflows,executable on cloud-based platforms,for ingesting the satellite data,performing the targeted processes,and generating the desired products.In this study,an operational workflow is proposed,based on monthly Evaporative Stress Index(ESI)anomaly,and implemented in cloud-based online Virtual Earth Laboratory(VLab)platform,as a demonstration,to monitor European agricultural water stress.To this end,daily time-series of actual and reference evapotranspiration(ETa and ET0),from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager(SEVIRI)sensor,were used to execute the proposed workflow successfully on VLab.The execution of the workflow resulted in obtaining one decade(2011–2020)of European monthly agricultural water stress maps at 0.04˚spatial resolution and corresponding stress reports for each country.To support open science,all the workflow outputs are stored in GeoServer,documented in GeoNetwork,and made available through MapStore.This enables creating a dashboard for better visualization of the results for end-users.The results from this study demonstrate the capability of VLab platform for water stress detection from time series of SEVIRI-ET data.

Background:Cowpea(Vigna unguiculata L.Walp.)is an economically important crop.It is nutritious and popular with consumers.However,it has been listed as one of the agricultural products of critical concern about safety in China and cyromazine is the major risk factor.Objectives:This study analyzed the dissipation and permeation kinetics of cyromazine residue in cowpea,to offer a scientific basis for the rational use of pesticide and ensure the safety of agricultural products.Materials and methods:The dissipation and residue level of the systemic insecticide cyromazine on cowpea under field and stored conditions were investigated.Subsequently,the spatial distribution of cyromazine was studied using mass spectrometry imaging to visualize the dynamic processes of permeation and migration in the tissues post pesticide application.Results:The dissipation processing of cyromazine in cowpea was shown to follow the first-order kinetics and half-life was 7.76 d in the field.In cowpea,the permeation and migration rate of cyromazine was faster than that in kidney beans and accumulation was mainly in the pulp.It is not safe to apply cyromazine to cowpeas with reference to the application method on kidney beans.Conclusions:These findings present vital data for the determination of risks linked with cowpea consumption and pesticide intake.
