Probabilistic back-analysis of rainfall-induced landslides for slope reliability prediction with multi-source information

Probabilistic back-analysis is an important means to infer the statistics of uncertain soil parameters,making the slope reliability assessment closer to the engineering ***,multi-source information(including test data,monitored data,field observation and slope survival records)is rarely used in current probabilistic *** the probabilistic back-analysis of spatially varying soil parameters and slope reliability prediction under rainfalls by integrating multi-source information is a challenging task since thousands of random variables and high-dimensional likelihood function are usually *** this paper,a framework by integrating a modified Bayesian Updating with Subset simulation(mBUS)method with adaptive Conditional Sampling(aCS)algorithm is established for the probabilistic back-analysis of spatially varying soil parameters and slope reliability *** this framework,the high-dimensional probabilistic back-analysis problem can be easily tackled,and the multi-source information(*** pressure heads and slope survival records)can be fully used in the back-analysis.A real Taoyuan landslide case in Taiwan,China is investigated to illustrate the effectiveness and performance of the established *** findings show that the posterior knowledge of soil parameters obtained from the established framework is in good agreement with the field ***,the updated knowledge of soil parameters can be utilized to reliably predict the occurrence probability of a landslide caused by the heavy rainfall event on September 12,2004 or forecast the potential landslides under future rainfalls in the Fuhsing District of Taoyuan City,Taiwan,China.

Are school uniforms associated with gender inequalities in physical activity? A pooled analysis of population-level data from 135 countries/regions

Purpose:It is aimed to assess whether school uniforms are associated with population-level gender inequalities in physical activity,and whether associations differ by school level,country/region income,and assessment ***:An ecological study design was *** collected data about global uniform practices using an online *** searched for country/region-level estimates of school-aged youth meeting physical activity guidelines from international surveillance *** selection was conducted in duplicate using a systematic process,and a random sample of all data was checked to ensure extraction and pooling processes were *** calculated absolute and relative gender inequalities in physical activity for each *** regression examined associations between country/region-level uniform practices(binary yes/no exposure variable) and country/region-level gender inequalities in physical activity guideline compliance(absolute and relative inequalities).We investigated moderation by school level,stratified analyses by income group,and repeated primary analyses using device-measured ***:Pooling data from 135 countries/regions(n=1,089,852),we found no association between population-level uniform practices and gender inequalities in physical activity across all ages(absolute:β=-0.2;95% confidence interval(95%CI):-1.7 to 1.3,p=0.74;relative:β=0.1;95%CI:-0.1 to 0.2,p=0.51).Subgroup analysis suggested a positive association in primary school settings(absolute:β=4.3;95%CI:-0.0 to 8.6,p=0.05).Among high-income countries,absolute inequalities were significantly greater in countries/regions with uniform practices(N=37) compared to those without(N=48)(9.1(SD=3.6) vs.7.8 percentage points(SD=4.3)).Repeating analyses using device-measured data(n=32,130;N=24) did not alter our primary *** initial descriptive statistics,we found that in countries/regions where a maj ority of schools(>50%) reportedly use uniforms,there was lower compli

Surrogate modeling for unsaturated infiltration via the physics and equality-constrained artificial neural networks

Machine learning(ML)provides a new surrogate method for investigating groundwater flow dynamics in unsaturated *** pure data-driven methods(*** neural network,DNN)can provide rapid predictions,but they do require sufficient on-site data for accurate training,and lack interpretability to the physical processes within the *** this paper,we provide a physics and equalityconstrained artificial neural network(PECANN),to derive unsaturated infiltration solutions with a small amount of initial and boundary *** takes the physics-informed neural network(PINN)as a foundation,encodes the unsaturated infiltration physical laws(*** equation,RE)into the loss function,and uses the augmented Lagrangian method to constrain the learning process of the solutions of RE by adding stronger penalty for the initial and boundary *** unsaturated infiltration cases are designed to test the training performance of PECANN,***-dimensional(1D)steady-state unsaturated infiltration,1D transient-state infiltration,two-dimensional(2D)transient-state infiltration,and 1D coupled unsaturated infiltration and *** predicted results of PECANN are compared with the finite difference solutions or analytical *** results indicate that PECANN can accurately capture the variations of pressure head during the unsaturated infiltration,and present higher precision and robustness than DNN and *** is also revealed that PECANN can achieve the same accuracy as the finite difference method with fewer initial and boundary training ***,we investigate the effect of the hyperparameters of PECANN on solving RE *** provides an effective tool for simulating unsaturated infiltration.

Mechanical behaviours of bedded sandstone under hydromechanical coupling

The combination of the dipping effect and hydromechanical(H-M)coupling effect can easily lead to water inrush disasters in water-rich roadways with different dip angles in coal ***,H-M coupling tests of bedded sandstones under identical osmotic pressure and various confining pressures were ***,the evolution curves of stress-strain,permeability and damage,macro-and mesoscopic failure characteristics were ***,the mechanical behaviour was characterized,and finally the failure mechanism was *** results showed that:(1)The failure of the sandstone with the bedding angle of 45°or 60°was the structure-dominant type,while that with the bedding angle of 0°,30°or 90°was the force-dominant type.(2)When the bedding angle was in the range of(0°,30°)or(45°,90°),the confining pressure played a dominant role in influencing the peak ***,withinβ∈(30°,45°),the bedding effect played a dominant role in the peak strength.(3)With the increase in bedding angle,the cohesion increased first,then decreased and finally increased,while the internal friction angle was the opposite.(4)When the bedding angle was 0°or 30°,the“water wedging”effect and the“bedding buckling”effect would lead to the forking or converging shear *** the bedding angle was 45°or 60°,the sliding friction effect would lead to the shear slipping *** the bedding angle was 90°,the combination of the“bedding buckling”effect and shear effect would lead to the mixed tension-shear *** above conclusions obtained are helpful for the prevention of water inrush disasters in water-rich roadways with different dips in coal mines.

A resolved CFD-DEM method is proposed to simulate the fluid-particle interaction for large complex *** airflow in a vertical sinter fixed bed is numerically studied using this *** multi-sphere clumped method is used to create irregular sinter particles in *** immersed boundary method and dynamic cell refinement are applied to describe the fluid flow around particles with higher resolution,by which the fluid-particle interaction can be simulated more *** simulation results presented the packing voidage distributions and the airflow fields in the sinter beds of different single and mixed particle size *** bed pressure drops were simulated and the results were compared with the corresponding experimental *** good agreement indicated that the proposed resolved CFD-DEM method is an effective tool to model the fluid-particle interaction for irregular large granules in the gas-solid multi-phase systems.

The effect of ethanol fuel dilution on oil performance and MoDTC tribofilms formation and composition

Ethanol has emerged as a promising alternative to fossil fuels,but its use can lead to significant dilution in lubricants,particularly during cold start or heavy *** dilution can affect the performance of additives,including friction modifiers like molybdenum dithiocarbamate(MoDTC),which are designed to reduce friction under extreme contact *** research suggests that ethanol may impact the performance of MoDTC,prompting this study’s goal to investigate the effects of ethanol on MoDTC tribofilms and their friction response under boundary lubrication ***,reciprocating tribological tests were performed with fully formulated lubricants containing MoDTC with varying ethanol *** results indicate that a critical ethanol dilution level inhibits friction reduction by MoDTC activation,resulting in friction coefficients(COFs)similar to the base *** tested with simple mixtures of polyalphaolefin(PAO)+MoDTC showed increased COFs with added *** of tested surfaces using Raman spectroscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),and X-ray absorption spectroscopy near the edge structure(XANES)revealed the presence of sulfates,MoO_(3),MoS_(2),and MoS_(x)O_(y)compounds in the tribofilms formed on the surfaces,with and without ethanol diluted in the ***,the addition of ethanol increased the sulfates and MoO_(3)content of the tribofilms at the expense of friction-reducing compounds such as MoS_(2)and MoS_(x)O_(y).These findings suggest that ethanol dilution in lubricants containing MoDTC creates an oxygen-rich interfacial medium that favors the formation of compounds with insufficient friction-reducing capabilities.

Aqueous perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA)elimination has raised significant concerns due to its persistence and ***β-PbO_(2)plate anodes have shown efficient mineralization of PFOA,it remains unclear whether PFOA can be effectively degraded usingβ-PbO_(2)reactive electrochemical membrane(REM).Herein,we assessed the performance of Ti/SnO_(2)-Sb/La-PbO_(2)REM for PFOA removal and proposed a possible degradation *** a current density of 10 mA/cm2and a membrane flux of 8500(liters per square meter per hour,LMH),the degradation efficiency of 10 mg/L PFOA was merely8.8%,whereas the degradation efficiency of 0.1 mg/L PFOA increased to 96.6%.Although the porous structure of theβ-PbO_(2)REM provided numerous electroactive sites for PFOA,the generated oxygen bubbles in the pores could block the pore channels and adsorb PFOA *** hindered the protonation process and significantly impeded the degradation of high-concentration *** experiments indicated that·OH played dominant role in PFOA *** electrical energy per order to remove 0.1 mg/L PFOA was merely 0.74 Wh/L,which was almost an order of magnitude lower than that of other anode *** study presents fresh opportunities for the electrochemical degradation of low-concentration PFOA usingβ-PbO_(2)REM.

Pillar is closely related to the stability and reliability of underground spaces in closed/abandoned *** present research introduced a new technique to strengthen square cement mortar columns via fiber-reinforced polymer(FRP)strips to verify the strengthening effect of FRP on *** to a fully wrapped FRP jacket,the advantages of FRP strip are cost-effective and easy-to-construct.A series of compression tests as well as theoretical analysis were carried out to explore the mechanical behavior of square cement mortar specimens partially strengthened with FRP *** results verified the effectiveness of FRP strips in enhancing the stress and strain of cement *** from unconfined cement mortar specimens,these FRP-strengthened cement mortar specimens are featured with the double-peaked behaviors,mainly attributed to the stress state transformation from a one-dimensional to a three-dimensional stress *** also indicated that the enhancement of stress increased with the FRP strip ***,the brittle-ductile transition ductile failure characteristics were also observed in FRP-confined cement mortar *** ultimate ductility of the cement mortar specimen decreases gradually with the growth of the FRP strip *** main contribution of this research is to enrich the strengthening techniques for residual pillars.

Mechanisms of Organelle Inheritance in Dividing Plant Cells

Organelles form essential compartments of all eukaryotic cells. Mechanisms that ensure the unbiased inheritance of organelles during cell division are therefore necessary to maintain the viability of future cell generations. Although inheritance of organelles represents a fundamental component of the cell cycle, surprisingly little is known about the underlying mechanisms that facilitate unbiased organelle inheritance. Evidence from a select number of studies, however, indicates that ordered organelle inheritance strategies exist in dividing cells of higher plants. The basic requirement for unbiased organelle inheritance is the duplication of organelle volume and distribution of the resulting organelle populations in a manner that facilitates unbiased partitioning of the organelle population to each daughter cell. Often, partitioning strategies are specific to the organelle, being influenced by the functional requirements of the organelle and whether the cells are mitotically active or re-entering into the cell cycle. Organelle partitioning mechanisms frequently depend on interactions with either the actin or microtubule cytoskeleton. In this focused review, we attempt to summarize key findings regarding organelle partitioning strategies in dividing cells of higher plants. We particularly concentrate on the role of the cytoskeleton in mediating unbiased organelle partitioning.
