Can back-calculated lengths based on otoliths measurements provide reliable estimates of Atlantic halibut(Hippoglossus hippoglossus)growth in the Gulf of Maine (U.S.A.)?

Atlantic halibut(Hippoglossus hippoglossus,Linnaeus,1758)are a data-poor stock within the waters of the United *** study evaluated the use of otolith measurements to back-calculate lengths of Atlantic halibut at previous ***-calculations have proven useful for estimating length at age and growth rates of other *** the best knowledge of the authors,this study is the first to document the use of this method for Atlantic *** back-calculations rely on a few key assumptions,such as proportionality of fish length and otolith length,which are not always *** study shows that backcalculations using the Fraser-Lee method can provide reasonable estimates of Atlantic halibut length at previous ages,especially when samples from young halibut are included to improve estimates of the intercept of the linear *** on back-calculated estimates,female and male halibut in the Gulf of Maine showed different growth rates after age *** was no evidence of changes in growth rates over an approximately 15 year time *** caught in the Gulf of Maine and on the neighboring Scotian Shelf showed some differences in growth rates;however,the results did not support strong conclusions about differences between the two regions as the direction of the differences was not consistent between the sexes and previous tagging studies have shown extensive movement between the two *** finding of reasonably accurate back-calculated lengths at previous ages is important for this data-poor species,as back-calculations increase the amount of information that can be obtained from otoliths.

Truffle-like fungi sporocarps in a eucalypt-dominated landscape: patterns in diversity and community structure

Truffle-like fungi are highly diverse yet poorly known in *** assess the species richness,biomass,and community assemblages of truffle-like fungi in different habitats we sampled sporocarps of truffle-like fungi in three eucalypt-dominated forest types(grassy woodland,wet sclerophyll forest,and dry sclerophyll forest)once in summer and once in winter,at two sites(Mount Kaputar and new england)in northern new South Wales,*** hundred and eighteen species in 35 genera were collected;over half(51.7%)of the species were *** woodland and wet forest communities had greater species richness and a lower standing crop than dry forest *** richness and standing crop was greater in winter than in ***,species from the family Russulaceae,and the genera Dermocybe,Descomyces,and Hysterangium were *** composition varied among forest types and each forest type exhibited a suite of unique and common species,although much variation was *** in community structure was associated with some habitat attributes;at Mount Kaputar,woody plant species richness,canopy cover,litter depth,soil phosphorous,and elevation helped explain the sporocarp communities of different forest types,while at new england,woody plant species richness,rainfall,topographic aspect,soil texture,and soil nitrogen helped explain *** work contributes to knowledge of trufflelike fungal diversity,the factors affecting sporocarp distribution across landscapes,and the availability of sporocarps as a food resource for mycophagous *** understanding of fungal diversity and mammal-fungal interactions also has important implications for managing forest biodiversity.

China’s 13th Five-Year Plan elevated the national mandate for environmental *** fisheries are characterized by full retention of high diversity catch harvested using unselective gears,creating ecological ***,China launched pilot projects in management by Total Allowable Catch(TAC)in five coastal provinces in 2017 and 2018 to build experience with output *** province launched an important pilot in its swimming crab fishery,the first to adopt a multispecies *** guide Fujian and other provinces in multispecies management,a workshop in April 2018 shared international *** workshop considered 13 case studies spanning a wide range of underlying scientific models and types of harvest *** harvest controls based on simple survey-or index-based models that aggregate trends for many species are typically operationally easier for managers and ***,inadequate management can cause declines of individual species,sometimes leading to adoption of species-specific models and then species-specific harvest *** transition often incurs economic costs through scientific and management demands,and constraints on harvest of co-occurring *** lessons revealed by the case studies suggest multispecies TACs might be effective in the Fujian swimming crab fishery given the modest number of species with similar and productive life history traits,and the market demand for all *** experimentation with different management approaches through pilot projects can enable China to maintain progress toward sustainable fisheries goals under the 14th Five-Year Plan.

Disasters exact a heavy toll ***,the degree to which we can accurately quantify their impact,in particular mortality,remains *** is critical to ensure that disaster data reliably reflects the scale,type,and distribution of disaster impacts given the role of data in:(1)risk assessments;(2)developing disaster risk management programs;(3)determining the resources for response to emergencies;(4)the types of action undertaken in planning for prevention and preparedness;and(5)identifying research *** Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 s seven global disaster-impact reduction targets represent the first international attempt to systematically measure the effectiveness of disaster-impact reduction as a means of better informing policy with *** A of the Sendai Framework aims to‘‘substantially reduce global disaster mortality by 2030,aiming to lower the average per 100,000 global mortality rate in the decade 2020–2030 compared to the period 2005–2015.’’This article provides an overview of the complexities associated with defining,reporting,and interpreting disaster mortality data used for gauging success in meeting Target A,acknowledging different challenges for different types of hazard events and subsequent *** concludes with suggestions of how to address these challenges to inform the public health utility of monitoring through the Sendai Framework.

The Role of Public Health Within the United Nations Post-2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction

This article explores the role of public health systems before, during, and after disasters, particularly within the scope of the United Nations Post-2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. It also examines the role of scientific and technological developments in assisting with improving the resilience of public health professionals and the communities they work in. In addition, it explores how the wide-ranging activities in public health have already contributed to the improved management of disasters and a decrease in associated risks. The article identifies areas of synergy in five key areas of recent policy and practice in public health(the health systems approach, risk assessments, the WHO/UNISDR/HPA Disaster Risk management fact sheets, chronic disease and disasters, and mental health impacts following disasters) and makes suggestions based on lessons identified from the previous(2005) global disaster risk reduction framework. In particular, we advocate the use of scientific evidence that addresses health and disaster risk simultaneously to increase the effectiveness of policy and practice in disaster risk reduction, health, and public health.

A risk table to address concerns external to stock assessments when developing fisheries harvest recommendations

This paper develops a risk table to facilitate incorporation of additional information into the fisheries stock assessment and management *** risk table is designed to evaluate unanticipated ecosystem and environmental impacts on marine resources that may require a rapid management *** risk table is a standardized framework to document concerns about the assessment model,population dynamics,and the ecosystem/environment that are not explicitly addressed within the stock assessment model.A scoring procedure is used to evaluate the severity of the *** concerns can then be evaluated in support for or against a reduction from the maximum Acceptable Biological Catch while providing reviewers and stakeholders transparent documentation of the *** risk table was applied successfully to several stocks on a trial basis during the 2018 groundfish assessment cycle for the North Pacific fishery management council,and will be used for all full groundfish assessments in *** changes in climate are likely for Alaska marine ecosystems in coming decades,and these changes are not entirely ***,we avocate that the risk table approach should be included in the suite of management tools used to address the effects of climate change on Alaska marine resources.

Developing an intermediate-complexity projection model for China's fisheries:A case study of small yellow croaker(Larimichthys polyactis)in the Haizhou Bay,China

Projection models are commonly used to evaluate the impacts of ***,previously developed projection tools were not suitable for China’s fisheries as they are either overly complex and data-demanding or too simple to reflect the realistic management ***,an intermediate-complexity projection model was developed that could adequately describe fish population dynamics and account for management measures including mesh size limits,summer closure,and spatial closure.A two-patch operating model was outlined for the projection model and applied to the heavily depleted but commercially important small yellow croaker(Larimichthys polyactis)fishery in the Haizhou Bay,China,as a case *** model was calibrated to realistically capture the fisheries dynamics with *** simulation scenarios featuring different fishing intensities based on status quo and maximum sustainable yield(MSY)were proposed and evaluated with *** projections were additionally performed to investigate the influence of uncertainty associated with recruitment strengths and the implementation of control *** was found that fishing at FMSY level could effectively rebuild the depleted stock biomass,while the stock collapsed rapidly in the status quo *** in recruitment and implementation could result in variabilities in management effects;but they did not much alter the management effects of the FMSY *** results indicate that the lack of science-based control targets in fishing mortality or catch limits has hindered the achievement of sustainable fisheries in ***,the presented work highlights that the developed projection model can promote the understanding of the possible consequences of fishing under uncertainty and is applicable to other fisheries in China.

Mitochondrial DNA suggests a single maternal origin for the widespread triploid parthenogenetic pest species, Paratanytarsus grimmii, but microsatellite variation shows local endemism

Parthenogenesis is common among invasive pest species, with many partheno- genetic species also showing polyploidy. Parthenogenetic polyploid species often have multiple hybrid origins and the potential to rapidly spread over vast geographical ar- eas. In this study, we examine patterns of mitochondrial and microsatellite variation in a widespread triploid parthenogenetic chironomid pest species, Paratanytarsus grimmii. Based on samples from five countries, including Australia, england, Germany, Japan, and Canada, we found extremely low mitochondrial diversity （〈0.14%）, with most individuals sharing a common and widespread haplotype. In contrast, microsatellite diversity revealed 41 clonal variants, which were regionally endemic. These findings suggest a single invasive maternal lineage ofP grimmii is likely to have recently spread over a broad geographical range. High levels of genotypic endemism suggest P grimmii populations have remained relatively isolated after an initial spread, with little ongoing migration. This, in part, can be attributed to rapid genetic differentiation via mutations of common clonal genotypes after P. grimmii spread, but multiple polyploidization and subsequent founder events are also likely to be contributing factors.

A preliminary snapshot of the trophic model and ecosystem attributes of Kaptai reservoir ecosystem, Bangladesh

A mass-balanced Ecopath model presents a quantitative description of the trophic structure,fl ow of energy and trophic interaction among ecological groups of an *** Ecopath with Ecosim(EwE)modeling program(Version 6.5)was used to develop a preliminary trophic model for a tropical freshwater *** total fi sh biomass was 6.245 t/km 2 and the highest trophic level of the reservoir was 3.362(for snakehead).The ecosystem is phytoplankton based because primary producers originated 68%and detritus originated 32%of the total fl ow from lower trophic *** gross effi ciency of the fi shery was 0.004,suggesting the ineffi ciency of the *** positive eff ect of phytoplankton and detritus on most of the other groups were evident from mixed trophic analysis while moderately higher ecotrophic effi ciency(EE)of phytoplankton shows the ecosystem’s potential bottom-up *** competition for the same resources among diff erent groups was also *** ratio of primary production/respiration(1.969)suggests that the ecosystem is at the developing stage and utmost contemplation should be given to concerned human *** low value of relative ascendancy(30.13)and overhead(69.87)reveals the stability of the ecosystem and some degrees of *** also predicts the presence of signifi cant strength in reserve of the system to withstand or overcome any ***,ecologically sustainable resource management plans should be implemented to ensure the sustainability of this reservoir resources.

The monitoring and management of aquatic ecosystems depend on precise estimates of *** analyses of environmental nucleic acids(eNAs),including environmental DNA(eDNA)and environmental RNA(eRNA),have garnered attention for their cost-effective and non-invasive biomonitoring ***,the accuracy of biodiversity estimates obtained through eNAs can vary among different organismal *** we evaluate the performance of eDNA and eRNA metabarcoding across nine organismal groups,ranging from bacteria to terrestrial vertebrates,in three crosssections of the Yangtze River,*** observe robust complementarity between eDNA and eRNA *** relative detectability of eNAs was notably influenced by major taxonomic groups and organismal sizes,with eDNA providing more robust signals for larger *** eDNA and eRNA exhibited similar cross-sectional and longitudinal ***,the detectability of larger organisms declined in eRNA metabarcoding,possibly due to differential RNA release and decay among different organismal groups or *** underscoring the potential of eDNA and eRNA in large river biomonitoring,we emphasize the need for differential interpretation of eDNA versus eRNA *** highlights the importance of careful method selection and interpretation in biomonitoring studies.
