Impacts of wetting-drying cycles on short-term carbon and nitrogen dynamics in Amynthas earthworm casts

Effects of earthworm casts on soil nutrient dynamics and their responses to changing moisture availability in subtropical ecosystems remain poorly *** study aimed to examine short-term carbon(C)and nitrogen(N)dynamics and their interactions with wetting-drying cycles in three different structural forms(i.e.,granular,globular,and heap-like)of Amynthas earthworm *** rates of C and N mineralization in the earthworm casts were examined under two different wetting-drying cycles(i.e.,2-d and 4-d wetting intervals)using a rainfall simulation *** three simulated rainfall events,subsamples of the earthworm casts were further incubated for 4 d for the determination of CO2 and N2O *** results of this study indicated that the impacts of wetting-drying cycles on the short-term C and N dynamics were highly variable among the three cast forms,but wetting-drying cycles significantly reduced the cumulative CO2 and N2O fluxes by 62%-83%and 57%-85%,respectively,when compared to the control without being subjected to any rainfall *** C mineralization rates in different cast forms were affected by the amount of organic substrates and N content in casts,which were associated with the food preference and selection of ***,the cumulative N2O fluxes did not differ among the three cast *** wetting and drying of casts not only enhanced aggregate stability by promoting bonds between the cast particles,but also inhibited microbial survival and growth during the prolonged drying period,which together hindered decomposition and *** findings demonstrated that the interactions between the structural forms,aggregate dynamics,and C and N cycling in the earthworm casts were highly complex.

Development and controversies of adjuvant therapy for pancreatic cancer

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive malignancy with a dismal prognosis. Radical surgery provides the only chance for a cure with a 5-year survival rate of 7%-25%. An effective adjuvant therapy is urgently needed to improve the surgical outcome. This review describes the current status of adjuvant therapy for pancreatic cancer, and highlights its controversies. DATA SOURCES: A Medline database search was performed to identify relevant articles using the keywords 'pancreatic neoplasm', and 'adjuvant therapy'. Additional papers were identified by a manual search of the references from the key articles. RESULTS: Eight prospective randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the use of adjuvant chemotherapy and chemoradiation for pancreatic cancer could be identified. The results for adjuvant regimens based on systemic 5-fluorouracil with or without external radiotherapy were conflicting. The recent two RCTs on gemcitabine based regimen gave promising results. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the available data, no standard adjuvant therapy for pancreatic cancer can be established yet. The best adjuvant regimen remains to be determined in large-scale RCTs. Future trials should use a gemcitabine based regimen.

Slope Instability at Nablus-Al Bathan Road, Palestinian territories (Causes, Analysis and Remedy Measurements)

Nablus-Al Bathan Road which connects Nablus City and Jordan Valley in the West Bank of Palestinian territories, was widened, reconstructed and rehabilitated in 2009, however, between 2010 and 2012 road defects at several locations were observed. To fix these defects especially at station 2 + 100 of the road, soil replacement in the body of the road and big boulders to support the edge of the road were used. Unfortunately, large settlement occurred in the part of the road under maintenance and more sliding and slope instability occurred in the road at station 2+ 100 during the remedial measures. Studies were carried out to find the causes of this problem. These included surveying of the area, geotechnical studies (making trial pits, performing geophysical seismic exploration and digging out several boreholes), in addition to slope stability analysis. It was found that the main causes of landslides were types of soils at the site, high slopes, groundwater recharged from rainfall and changing of weights (cut and fill). Remedy measures were suggested to overcome sliding problem based on available resources and local technology.

Loco-regional intervention for hepatocellular carcinoma

A novel lamellar feather-like CeO_(2) structure has been fabricated by using a triblock copolymer as the structure-directing *** material was characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy,transmission electron microscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,and BET surface area *** with conventional spherical shaped ceria prepared by ammonia gelation,the ceria feathers have superior ability to support nanosized platinum particles due to their special ***“skeletons”of ceria feathers can serve as an ideal host matrix to anchor the platinum ***,the inter-crossing pattern of the“skeletons”also acts as a partition to separate platinum particles,allowing the Pt nanoparticles(average diameter~6 nm)to be highly dispersed in the *** Pt/feather-like CeO_(2) catalyst exhibits high activity in the water gas shift reaction.

Acupuncture as a potential approach to improve the health of women with obesity

In addition to higher risks of various obstetric and gynaecological illnesses among women with obesity or who are overweight, maternal adiposity threatens the lifetime health of their offspring. Diverse treatments are provided, including complementary and alternative medicine such as Chinese medical practices. Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicinal method, is increasingly being applied to this health problem. This literature review analyses 25 clinical studies, involving 2407 participants aged 13-65 in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and North America. This illustrates the use of acupuncture alone or with other approaches to control body weight, obesity-induced diseases, and gynaecological health. Although positive indicators are presented, this study offers recommendations for enhancing reliability and validity in further research. It therefore suggests the use of acupuncture in dealing with obesity due to its efficacy, and economic and safety benefits.

Domesticating Time： Gendered Temporalities in Hou Hsiao-hsien＇s Cafe Lumiere

This article utilizes the trope of domesticity/domestication in order to explore notions of gendered temporality in Hou Hsiao-hsien＇s Cafe Lumiere （2003）. In dialogue with the Chinese writer Eileen Chang and Western theories about women＇s time and domestic temporality, the article proposes that the works of both Hou and Chang can be described as instances of ecriture feminine that interrogate an ambivalence toward domesticity. Drawing on Chantal Akerman＇s film in contrast to that of Hou, the article further demonstrates how the use of the cinematographic long take domesticates time and space, as well as the ways in which the horror of everyday domesticity have been captured through what Rey Chow calls ＂feminine details.＂ Finally, the present article argues that Cafe Lumiere domesticates a fear of domesticity and pregnancy through a reconfiguration of linear and cyclical time, a reversal of gender roles in its protagonists, and a privileging of aurality over visuality in its cinematic style, such that it presents the potential for a new kind of union and a new kind of futurity premised upon reordered gendered forms of temporality.

The chemistry of inclusion compounds has a long history and is nowadays a subject of wide-ranging and intense study. With the awarding of the 1987 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Donald J. Cram, Jean-Marie Lehn and Charles J. Pedersen for their fundamental work on 'host-guest' or 'supramolecular' systems, inclusion chemistry has come to the fore front in contemporary researches. Increasing varieties of novel inclusion compounds and new host molecules have been synthesized recently. Quantitative phase microscopy(QPM)has emerged as an important tool for material metrology and biological *** broader adoption in those applications,we have proposed and demonstrated a new portable off-axis QPM method,which works in both transmission and reflection modes to meet different sample measurement *** temporal and spatial sensitivities of our system,as quantified by optical path-length difference values,are 0.65 nm and 1.04 nm,*** demonstrate its applicability for a wide range of applications,we deployed our system for profiling transistor gold electrode samples,observing red blood cell membrane fluctuations,imaging living cells flowing in a microfluidic chip,*** portable QPM system has a low-cost design and involves a simple and robust phase-retrieval algorithm that we envision will allow for broader deployment at different environmental settings,including in resource-limited sites and integration with other metrology or imaging modalities.

Two Translations of Ji Yun＇s Close Scrutiny： the Translator, the Reader and the Settings of Translation

This article focuses on two English translations of Ji Yun＇s 纪昀 eigh- teenth-century collection of ＂stories of the strange,＂ Random Jottings at the Cottage of Close Scrutiny （Yuewei caotang biji 阅微草堂笔记）. The translation done by Leo Tak-hung Chan is set within the context of his 1998 sinological monograph, while David Pollard＇s recent translation, published in 2014, stands as an edited volume of translation oriented toward the general reader. Referring to textual and paratextual elements in these two translations, I hope to show how the ＂setting＂ of a translation modulates its tone and message, which in turn unfolds with the selection, style and overall structure of the translation. I also draw from an actual dialog between Leo Chan and David Pollard, which evolves around the various aspects in translating Ji Yun＇s work and the more general issues in sinology and translating Chinese literature. The dialog between the two translators of Ji Yun further illustrates the translators＇ approaches to the original text, their mediating efforts toward crosscultural readability and literary felicity and specifically, how the state of mind of a translator might come into play with the ＂flavor＂ of a translation.
