An examination of predictive markers for successful sperm extraction procedures:a linear model and systematic review

The authors performed a comprehensive review of current literature to create a model comparing commonly evaluated variables in male factor infertility,for example,follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH),testicular volume(TV),and testosterone(T),to better predict sperm retrieval rate(SRR).Twenty-nine studies were included,9 with data on conventional testicular sperm extraction(cTESE)for a total of 1227 patients and 20 studies including data on microdissection testicular sperm extraction(mTESE)for a total of 4760 patients.A weighted-means value of SRR,FSH,T,and TV was created,and a weighted linear regression was then used to describe associations among SRR,type of procedure,FSH,T,and *** this study,weighted-means values demonstrated mTESE to be superior to cTESE with an SRR of 51.9%vs 40.1%.Multiple weighted linear regressions were created to describe associations among SRR,procedure type,FSH,T,and *** models showed that for every 1.19 mIU ml^(−1)increase in FSH,there would be a significant decrease in SRR by 1.0%.Seeking to create a more clinically relevant model,FSH values were then divided into normal,moderate elevation,and significant elevation categories(FSH20 mIU ml^(−1),respectively).For an index patient undergoing cTESE,the retrieval rates would be 57.1%,44.3%,and 31.2%for values normal,moderately elevated,and significantly elevated,*** conclusion,in a large meta-analysis,mTESE was shown to be more successful than cTESE for sperm *** has an inverse relationship to SRR in retrieval techniques and can alone be predictive of cTESE SRR.

In this paper, we propose a scheme for implementing quantum game （QG） in cavity quantum electrodynamics（QED）. In the scheme, the cavity is only virtually excited and thus the proposal is insensitive to the cavity fields states and cavity decay. So our proposal can be experimentally realized in the range of current cavity QED techniques.

Recent studies have demonstrated the ability of seismic oceanography to reveal finescale vertical structures of water column in the oceans based on multichannel seismic(MCS)reflection *** information can clarify the dynamic processes of mixing,exchange,and translation of water mass and *** this study,we present four MCS lines and satellite data to show high-resolution seismic images of shallow waters over the Shatsky Rise in the Northwest Pacific Ocean,where the Kuroshio Exten-sion passes and *** of our MCS transects crossed the center of an anticyclonic warm eddy on August 28,2010,confirmed by satellite data such as sea level anomaly(SLA),geostrophic current anomaly(GCA),and sea surface temperature anomaly(SSTa).The seismic image showed that the eddy vertical structure featured a bowl-like shape and onion-like internal *** slightly tilted(2°-3°)at the boundaries between water masses with differing *** addition,the discrepancies in SLA,GCA,and SSTa between water masses resulted in different seismic *** water masses with high SLA,anticyclonic GCA and positive SSTa featured high-amplitude,continuous,clear-layered,and non-linear reflections,whereas those with low SLA,cyclonic GCA,and negative SSTa were associated with weak,fragmented,less stratification,and more linear reflectors.

BACKGROUND Paragonimiasis is a food-borne parasitic infection caused by lung flukes of the genus Paragonimus. Although the most common site of infection is the pleuropulmonary area, the parasite can also reach other parts of the body on its journey from the intestines to the lungs, ending up in locations such as the brain,abdomen, skin, and subcutaneous tissues. Ectopic paragonimiasis is difficult to diagnose due to the rarity of this *** SUMMARY Here, we report a rare case of simultaneous breast and pulmonary paragonimiasis in a woman presenting painless breast mass and lung nodule with a history of eating raw trout. Grenvillian orogeny in the southern Cathaysia Block:Constraints from U-Pb ages and Lu-Hf isotopes in zircon from metamorphic basement

Metamorphic basement rocks in the Cathaysia Block are composed mainly of meta-sediments with different ages. new zircon U-Pb geochronological results from the meta-sedimentary rocks exposed in the Zengcheng and Hezi areas, southern Cathaysia Block, show that they consist dominantly of early Neoproterozoic (1.0―0.9 Ga) materials with minor Paleo- to Mesoproterozoic and late Neoproterozoic (0.8―0.6 Ga) components, suggesting that the detritus mostly come from a Grenvillian orogen. The youngest detrital zircon ages place a constraint on the deposition time of these sediments in Late Neoproterozoic. Zircon Hf isotopic compositions indicate that the Grenvillian zircons were derived from the reworking of Mesoproterozoic arc magmatic rocks and Paleoproterozoic continental crust, implying an arc-continent collisional setting. Single-peak age spectra and the presence of abundant euhedral Grenvillian zircons suggest that the sedimentary provenance is not far away from the sample location. Thus, the Grenvillian orogen probably preexisted along the southern margin of the Cathaysia Block, or very close to the south. Similarity in the ages of Grenvillian orogeny and the influence of the assembly of Gondwana in south China with India and East Antarctic are discussed, with suggestion that south China was more likely linked with the India-East Antarctica continents in Early Neoproterozoic rather than between western Laurentia and eastern Australia.

Phosphorylation/dephosphorylation is probably the most common and important reversible post-translational modification of proteins. Analyzing the functional effects of phosphorylation is helpful for understanding the biological functions of proteins. Identification of the phosphorylation sites of phosphorylated protein is a prerequisite for research on phosphorylation. In this work, an effective and simple method of identification of protein phosphorylation sites has been developed. Phosphopeptides were selectively enriched with immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) and subsequently chemically modified by 4-sulfophenyI isothiocyanate, and then the chemically modified phosphopeptides were sequenced with post-source decay (PSD) matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight mass spectrometry for detecting phosphorylation sites. The charge of derivatization by 4-sulfophenyl isothiocyanate introduces a negative sulfonic acid group at the N-terminus of a peptide, and enables the selective detection of only a single series of C-terminal y-type ions. This chemically assisted method greatly simplifies the extremely complex pattern of PSD fragment ions and makes the PSD spectra more easier to be interpreted. The phosphorylation sites of a synthesized model phosphopeptide and human c-myc protein have been successfully identified by this method.

S1P/S1PR1 signaling differentially regulates the allogeneic response of CD4 and CD8 T cells by modulating mitochondrial fission

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) significantly contributes to patient morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) signaling is involved in the biogenetic processes of different immune cells. In the current study, we demonstrated that recipient sphingosine kinase 1 (Sphk1), but not Sphk2, was required for optimal S1PR1-dependent donor T-cell allogeneic responses by secreting S1P. Using genetic and pharmacologic approaches, we demonstrated that inhibition of Sphk1 or S1PR1 substantially attenuated acute GVHD (aGVHD) while retaining the graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect. At the cellular level, the Sphk1/S1P/S1PR1 pathway differentially modulated the alloreactivity of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells;it facilitated T-cell differentiation into Th1/Th17 cells but not Tregs and promoted CD4+ T-cell infiltration into GVHD target organs but was dispensable for the CTL activity of allogeneic CD8+ T cells. At the molecular level, the Sphk1/S1P/S1PR1 pathway augmented mitochondrial fission and increased mitochondrial mass in allogeneic CD4+ but not CD8+ T cells by activating the AMPK/AKT/mTOR/Drp1 pathway, providing a mechanistic basis for GVL maintenance when S1P signaling was inhibited. For translational purposes, we detected the regulatory efficacy of pharmacologic inhibitors of Sphk1 and S1PR1 in GVHD induced by human T cells in a xenograft model. Our study provides novel mechanistic insight into how the Sphk1/S1P/S1PR1 pathway modulates T-cell alloreactivity and validates Sphk1 or S1PR1 as a therapeutic target for the prevention of GVHD and leukemia relapse. This novel strategy may be readily translated into the clinic to benefit patients with hematologic malignancies and disorders.
