Occurrence, variations, and risk assessment of neonicotinoid insecticides in Harbin section of the Songhua River, northeast China

Neonicotinoid insecticides(NNIs)have been intensively used and exploited,resulting in their presence and accumulation in multiple environmental media.We herein investigated the current levels of eight major NNIs in the Harbin section of the Songhua River in northeast China,providing the first systematic report on NNIs in this region.At least four NNIs in water and three in sediment were detected,with total concentrations ranging from 30.8 to 135 ng L^(-1) and from 0.61 to 14.7 ng g^(-1) dw,respectively.Larger spatial variations in surface water NNIs concentrations were observed in tributary than mainstream(p<0.05)due to the intensive human activities(e.g.,horticulture,urban landscaping,and household pet flea control)and the discharge of wastewater from many treatment plants.There was a significant positive correlation(p<0.05)between the concentrations of residual imidacloprid(IMI),clothianidin(CLO),and S4NNIs in the sediment and total organic carbon(TOC).Due to its high solubility and low octanol-water partition coefficient(Kow),the sediment-water exchange behavior shows that NNIs in sediments can re-enter into the water body.Human exposure risk was assessed using the relative potency factor(RPF),which showed that infants have the highest exposure risk(estimated daily intake(SIMIeq EDI):31.9 ng kg^(-1) bw$d^(-1)).The concentration thresholds of NNIs for aquatic organisms in the Harbin section of the Songhua River were determined using the species sensitivity distribution(SSD)approach,resulting in a value of 355 ng L^(-1) for acute hazardous concentration for 5%of species(HC5)and 165 ng L^(-1) for chronic HC5.Aquatic organisms at low trophic levels were more vulnerable to potential harm from NNIs.

Assessment of heavy metal contamination in the sur?cial sediments from the lower Meghna River estuary, Noakhali coast, Bangladesh

Sediment samples were collected from ten selected sites of the lower Meghna River estuary, and six heavy metals were analyzed with Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry(AAS) to assess the contamination level and the metals’ association with sediment grain size. The current results revealed that the mean concentrations of the studied metals were ranked in descending order of iron(Fe)(1.29 ? 103 mg/kg) > zinc(Zn)(42.41 mg/kg) > lead(Pb)(12.48 mg/kg) > chromium(Cr)(10.59 mg/kg) > copper(Cu)(6.22 mg/kg) > cadmium(Cd)(0.28 mg/kg). The geo-accumulation, contamination, and pollution load indexes suggested that the lower Meghna river estuary was not contaminated by Fe, Zn, Pb, Cr, and Cu.The mean size of the sediment ranged from 28.92 to 126.2 mm, and the Pearson correlation coefficient showed a significant association between Fe and Pb(coefficient of determination, r2? 0.836; p < 0.05),and no significant correlation was found between individual metals and grain size, indicating no or low influence on the metals distribution.

To investigate aerosol optical properties in the Beijing metropolitan area,aerosol absorption coefficient(Ab) ,scattering coefficient(Sc) ,and fine particulate matter(PM2.5) were measured in the Beijing urban area from 20 May to 30 August 2009.The average Ab,Sc,single scattering albedo(SSA) ,and PM2.5 concentration were 58.0±39.5 M m-1,343.5±353.7 M m-1,0.80±0.10 and 63.6±50.0-g m-3,respectively,during the observation period.Ab,Sc,and SSA all showed single peak diurnal variations,with their maximum values being measured at 0500,1000,and 1300 local time,respectively.Ab and Sc had a strong positive correlation with PM2.5,and Ab,Sc,and PM2.5 all had positive correlations with relative humidity and negative correlations with wind speed.

Gas separation is a key issue in various industrial fields. Hydrogen has the potential for application in clean fuel technologies. Therefore, the separation and purification of hydrogen is an important research subject. CO2 capture and storage have important roles in ＂green chemistry＂. As an effective clean technology, gas separation using inorganic membranes has attracted much attention in the last several decades. Membrane processes have many applications in the field of gas separation. Cement is one type of inorganic material, with the advantages of a lower cost and a longer lifespan. An experimental setup has been created and improved to measure twenty different cement membranes. The purpose of this work was to investigate the influence of gas molecule properties on the material transport and to explore the influence of operating conditions and membrane composition on separation efficiency. The influences of the above parameters are determined, the best conditions and membrane type are found, it is shown that cementitious material has the ability to separate gas mixtures, and the gas transport mechanism is studied.

Carry over from previous year environmental conditions alters dominance hierarchy in a prairie plant community

Aims To determine if an experimentally applied anomalous weather year could have effects on species composition and community structure that would carry over into the following year.Methods We conducted a field experiment applying two levels of temperature(ambient and+4C)and two levels of precipitation(ambient and doubled)and followed cover of plant species during the treatment year and one post-treatment year.Data analysis included ordination analysis,examination of species frequency distributions and comparison of cover of functional groups and individual species.Important Findings A drought during the summer and fall of the treatment year resulted in significant differences in community structure between the 2 years.C3 and winter annual species were depressed in the spring of the second year following the dry autumn.Species richness and legume cover increased in the second,wetter,year.Treatments caused no overall differences in community structure but did alter the dominance hierarchy of species among treatments as well as years.Warming decreased relative cover of winter annuals and early spring-flowering species but increased other annuals.Warming and double precipitation together increased cover of C4 perennial graminoids.In particular,the warming and precipitation treatments both increased the abundance of Andropogon gerardii,not individually altering the dominance hierarchy but together nearly doubling the relative cover of A.gerardii,making it the most abundant species in the combined treatment,while the cover of Bromus arvensis,the former dominant,decreased by 25%.The following year,Andropogon relative cover increased further in the former warmed plots,becoming dominant in both the formerly warmed and warmed plus double precipitation treatments.The year following treatments also saw an increase in relative cover of summer-blooming species in the formerly warmed plots and differences among the former treatments in species richness of functional groups.If the effects of one anomalous year on plant abundan

Sensors and Methods for Measuring Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Different Components of Livestock Production Facilities

Greenhouse gas monitoring on a broader scale is necessary to ensure that a cap-and-trade system is effective, reduces measurement uncertainty, and detects fraudulent or illegal activities. The recent strict air quality regulation in livestock production facilities has accelerated the need for accurate on-farm determination of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission rates (ERs) from livestock operations in the United States under a wide range of production, management, and climate conditions. The estimation of GHG emissions from different ground-level sources or at a property line is a very complicated process, and such measurements require multidirectional expertise including engineering, micrometeorology, agronomy, applied physics, and chemistry. Accurate measurement of gaseous concentration from an emitting source is a prerequisite and of paramount importance for estimating emissions rates (ERs) using any micro-meteorological and sampling device-based method. This paper provides an overview of the state-of-the-art sensors and analyzers used to measure GHG concentrations. Sensor and analyzer selection and their performance in the laboratory and field were discussed. In addition, protocols for data quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) when deploying sensors in the area for long-term use were also discussed. In addition, the preparation of measurement systems, coupling of air samplers with sensing systems for measuring gaseous concentrations, and uncertainties inherent to such measurement methods as a whole to estimate ERs were discussed in this paper.

Evaluating Model Effectiveness for Soil Infiltration Attribute: Comparison of Green-Ampt, Horton and Modified Green-Ampt Infiltration Models

Soil infiltration is a very important concept in hydrology as well as irrigation, which plays a vital role in estimating surface runoff and groundwater recharge. It is a complicated process that varies with numerous factors. Accurate estimation of soil infiltration is required for future irrigation, and many other purposes. To estimate the infiltration process, there are numerous models. The majority of them have some presumptions, a unique calculation method, and some limitations. The purpose of the paper was to assess the model’s performance for a similar hypothetical scenario involving soil infiltration. It compared the infiltration rate, runoff rate, and incremental infiltration versus time for three different infiltration models: the Green-Ampt model (GA), the Horton model and the Modified Green-Ampt (MGA) model. A spreadsheet was used to calculate the Horton model, and HYDROL-INF (V 5.03) was used to simulate the other two models. Among those three models, the MGA model outperformed those three models, while the GA model produced greater infiltration rate than rainfall, which was insensible. The study showed that the MGA model, which provides useful infiltration predictions, outperformed the other two infiltration models. Since the Horton model does not consider ponding conditions, it is only applicable when the effective rainfall intensity exceeds the final infiltration capacity. Moreover, the GA model’s initial infiltration rate is irrational because it disregards the intensity of the rainfall. The results of this study will assist in selecting the most accurate method for estimating soil infiltration for agricultural purposes.

Divergent responses of soil carbon and nitrogen pools to short-term nitrogen addition between two plantations in Northeast China

Nitrogen(N)deposition has a profound influence on forest soil carbon(C)and N pools,but there was no consensus on the responses of different C and N components in different forest types.In this study,a two-year simulated N deposition experiment with four levels of N(NH4NO3)-addition treatments(0,50,100,and 150 kg N/hm^(2)·a)were conducted in Larix gmelinii(LG)and Quercus mongolica(QM)plantation in Northeast China,in order to investigate the C and N pool dynamics under continuously enhanced N deposition.Soil organic carbon(SOC),soil total N(STN)and their active components(readily oxidizable C,ROC;dissolved organic C,DOC;microbial biomass C,MBC,dissolved organic N,DON;microbial biomass N,MBN)of the forest soil were measured monthly from May to October 2017.C and N contents in LG were observed higher than in QM.N addition had no effect on SOC and STN of LG,but significantly increased SOC and STN of QM at low N addition level.Low N addition generally raised active C components(ROC,DOC,and MBC)in both plantations,whereas high N addition did not significantly affect these components,or even decreased ROC in LG soil.Low N addition also increased STN and MBN of QM,while no significant change in STN and MBN of LG was observed.DON was directly affected by N addition and increased significantly with elevated N addition levels.The results indicated that N addition,especially of low rate,might enhance the C sequestration capacity of the forest soils and mitigate climate change.

Experiments and modelling of phenanthrene biodegradation in the aqueous phase by a mixed culture

Pollution by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons（PAHs） is widespread due to tmsuitable disposal of industrial waste. They are mostly defined as priority pollutants by environmental protection authorities worldwide. Phenanthrene, a typical PAH, was selected as the target in this paper. The PAH-degrading mixed culture, named ZM, was collected from a petroleum contaminated river bed. This culture was injected into phenanthrene solutions at different concentrations to quantify the biodegradation process. Results show near-complete removal of phenanthrene in three days of biodegradation if the initial phenanthrene concentration is low. When the initial concentration is high, the removal rate is increased but 20%-40% of the phenanthrene remains at the end of the experiment. The biomass shows a peak on the third day due to the combined effects of microbial growth and decay. Another peak is evident for cases with a high initial concentration, possibly due to production of an intermediate metabolite. The pH generally decreased during biodegradation because of the production of organic acid. Two phenomenological models were designed to simulate the phenanthrene biodegradation and biomass growth. A relatively simple model that does not consider the intermediate metabolite and its inhibition of phenanthrene biodegradation cannot fit the observed data. A modified Monod model that considered an intermediate metabolite （organic acid） and its inhibiting reversal effect reasonably depicts the experimental results.

The results brought out in the trials of slope protection along Qinghai-Tibet Highway are presented in this paper. The trials were carried out simultaneously at 5 sites in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from 2000 to 2002. Altitudes at the experimental sites range between （4 240） m and （5 040） m. 4 sites are in permafrost area, and 1 site is in seasonally frozen ground. According to the trials of slope protection, vegetation is preferred to protect slopes along Qinghai-Tibet Highway. Road-GoodR, a chemical stabilizer, is proved as a good material for slope protection, and soil engineering system, combined with vegetative component and grade stabilization structures is proved as the best slope protection measure in these areas. The results showed that high-altitude areas at an altitude lower than （5 040） m, annual average temperatures higher than （-5.6） ℃ and annual rainfall more than 262\^2 mm, slopes can be protected using vegetative components.\;Trials for plant species selection proved that cold resistant grasses, Elymus nutans and Elymus sibiricus can be used for vegetation recovery along Qinghai-Tibet Highway. The results demonstrated that high-altitude areas at an altitude lower than （5 040） m, annual average temperatures higher than （-5.6） ℃ and annual rainfall more than 262\^2 mm, could be replanted. Hydroseeding proved to be a good planting technique, and mulch materials benefited vegetation recovery in such area.\;The experiment also proved that planting could improve slope stability, protect the ecological environment, and improve the roadside landscape.
