Background and purpose The therapeutic potential of different stem cells for ischaemic stroke treatment is intriguing and somewhat *** results from our laboratory have demonstrated the potential benefits of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells(MSC)in a rodent stroke *** hypothesised that MSC treatment would effectively promote the recovery of sensory and motor function in both males and females,despite any apparent sex differences in post stroke brain *** Transient focal cerebral ischaemia was induced in adult Sprague-Dawley rats by occlusion of the middle cerebral *** the procedure,male and female rats of the untreated group were euthanised 1 day after reperfusion and their brains were used to estimate the resulting infarct volume and tissue *** groups of stroke-induced male and female rats were treated with MSC or vehicle and were subsequently subjected to a battery of standard neurological/neurobehavioral tests(Modified neurological Severity Score assessment,adhesive tape removal,beam walk and rotarod).The tests were administered at regular intervals(at days 1,3,5,7 and 14)after reperfusion to determine the time course of neurological and functional recovery after *** The infarct volume and extent of swelling of the ischaemic brain were similar in males and *** similar pathological stroke lesions,the clinical manifestations of stroke were more pronounced in males than females,as indicated by the neurological scores and other *** treatment significantly improved the recovery of sensory and motor function in both sexes,and it demonstrated efficacy in both moderate stroke(females)and severe stroke(males).Conclusions Despite sex differences in the severity of post stroke outcomes,MSC treatment promoted the recovery of sensory and motor function in male and female rats,suggesting that it may be a promising treatment for stroke.

In the last several years, traditional Chinese medicine （TCM） has made much progress in the treatment of neurological diseases. The living space of TCM in neurological diseases lies in refractory diseases, aging and chronic diseases caused by multiple factors as well as sub-health state and chronic fatigue state. The effect model of TCM mainly consists of whole effect, self-organization, self-stable model, holographic effect and butterfly effect. The effective point of TCM in neurological diseases lies mainly in end-points and health-related events. Moreover, TCM has advantages in the evaluation of symptoms, syndrome and quality of life （QOL）. Some key indexes should be included when evaluating the efficacy of TCM in neurological diseases. Meanwhile, the advantages of TCM such as end-points, health-related events and QOL should be highlighted. Multi-subject researching methods could be adopted to make a comprehensive evaluation of subjective and objective indexes. The clinical evidence on the TCM efficacy evaluation may come from RCTs, and other types of designs can also be considered.

Hepatitis C virus(HCV)infection is considered a systemic disease because of involvement of other organs and tissues concomitantly with liver *** the extrahepatic manifestations,neuropsychiatric disorders have been reported in up to 50%of chronic HCV infected *** the central and peripheral nervous system may be involved with a wide variety of clinical *** HCV-associated neurological conditions include cerebrovascular events,encephalopathy,myelitis,encephalomyelitis,and cognitive impairment,whereas"brain fog",depression,anxiety,and fatigue are at the top of the list of psychiatric ***,HCV infection is known to cause both motor and sensory peripheral neuropathy in the context of mixed cryoglobulinemia,and has also been recently recognized as an independent risk factor for *** extrahepatic manifestations are independent of severity of the underlying chronic liver disease and hepatic *** brain is a suitable site for HCV replication,where the virus may directly exert neurotoxicity;other mechanisms proposed to explain the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric disorders in chronic HCV infection include derangement of metabolic pathways of infected cells,alterations in neurotransmitter circuits,autoimmune disorders,and cerebral or systemic inflammation.A pathogenic role for HCV is also suggested by improvement of neurological and psychiatric symptoms in patients achieving a sustained virologic response following interferon treatment;however,further ad hoc trials are needed to fully assess the impact of HCV infection and specific antiviral treatments on associated neuropsychiatric disorders.

Based on the method of Brazelton and Amiel-Tison for behavioral neurological measurement in the newborn and our own experience, we formulated a 20-item neonatal behavioral neurological assessment (NBNA). For setting up a practical method and a normal range of its scores in China, we examined 714 normal newborns (male 369, female 345), with NBNA at the age of 2-3, 12-14, 26-28 days for a total of 2 142 times, in 12 provinces of China from May to October 1988. NBNA contains 5 clusters: behavior (6 items); passive tone (4 items); active tone (4 items); primary reflexes (3 items); and general assessment (3 items). Each item has 3 scales (0,1,2). Twenty items have a maximum of 40 scores. Among the 2 142 times examined, 90.4% of the 714 newborns had 39-40 scores, 97%≥37 and none below 35. Measurements of the first, second and third time revealed that the total scores increased with age. The difference was statistically significant. The abilities of auditory and visual orientations and active neck tone improved obviously with age. NBNA shows distinct stability and reliability. The score is not influenced by geographic location; the scoring system is simple and the manipulation takes only ten minutes.

In Alzheimer’s disease and ischemic stroke,intranasal insulin can act as a neuroprotective ***,whether intranasal insulin has a neuroprotective effect in intracerebral hemorrhage and its potential mechanisms remain poorly *** this study,a mouse model of autologous blood-induced intracerebral hemorrhage was treated with 0.5,1,or 2 IU insulin via intranasal delivery,twice per day,until 24 or 72 hours after *** with saline treatment,1 IU intranasal insulin treatment significantly reduced hematoma volume and brain edema after cerebral hemorrhage,decreased blood-brain barrier permeability and neuronal degeneration damage,reduced neurobehavioral deficits,and improved the survival rate of *** levels of p-AKT and p-GSK3βwere significantly increased in the perihematoma tissues after intranasal insulin *** findings suggest that intranasal insulin therapy can protect the neurological function of mice after intracerebral hemorrhage through the AKT/GSK3βsignaling *** study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the North Sichuan Medical College of China(approval ***(A)2019(01))on January 7,2019.
