We previously devised a new type of portable hydraulic turbine that uses the kinetic energy of an open-channel flow to improve output power by catching and accelerating the flow. The turbine contains an axial flow runner with an appended collection device and a diffuser section that is not axisymmetric. The objective of this study is to determine how interference between the collection device and the runner influences performance characteristics of the turbine. We investigated the performance characteristics of the turbine and flow field for different numbers of blades during both unsteady and steady flow. During an unsteady flow, the maximum values of power coefficients for three and two blades increased by approximately 8.8% and 21.4%, respectively, compared to those during a steady flow. For the three-blade runner, the power coefficient showed small fluctuations, but for the two-blade runner, the power coefficient showed large fluctuations. These fluctuations in the power coefficient are attributed to fluctuations in the loading coefficient, which were generated by interference between the runner and the diffuser section of the collection device.

By using soft X-ray spectroscopy, we investigate the inner-shell excitation and relaxation processes in atomic and ionic neon targets. Resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy was applied to neutral neon atom in the regions of the [1s]np （n = 3, 4,…, ε） excited states and [1s2p]3pmp （m = 3,4） doubly excited states to obtain the spectroscopic information on the [2p]np and [2p^2]3prnp final electronic states, where square brackets indicate hole states. The energy levels of the [2p^2]3prnp （m = 3,4） electronic states were spectroscopically measured for the first time. As for the ionic neon target, on the other hand, the photoion yield spectroscopy was adopted to survey the 1s→ np （n = 2, 3） resonant excitation and subsequent Auger decay processes for Ne^＋ target-ions. The observed Ne^2＋ photoion yield spectrum is successflllly explained by the theoretical calculations based on the nmlticonfiguration Dirac-Fock method

Lagrangian and Eulerian statistics are obtained from the direct numerical simulation of a turbulent channel flow. The Reynolds number is obtained to be Reτ = 100 （based on friction velocity and channel half-height）. The Lagrangian time microscales are compared to their Eulerian equivalents. It is found that the Lagrangian time microscales equal the Eulerian time microscales at the wall, but they are consistently larger than the Eulerian away from the wall. The Eulerian time scales are also found to be scaled by the propagation velocity rather than the mean velocity. The ratio of the Lagrangian to the Eulerian time microscales is found to be nearly constant away from the wall （y^＋〉 40）.

Prior to his initial diagnosis, a 21-year-old male had been experiencing facial acne for two years and had been treated by a doctor in private practice. The patient visited our department because the clinical manifestations of mandibular acne did not improve. At the time of initial examination, telangiectasia (TE), post-inflammatory erythema (PIE), post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), atrophic scars (ASs), and a hypertrophic scar (HS) with induration were observed on the right neck. We diagnosed this as an acne vulgaris complication. HS lesions were topically treated by injecting triamcinolone acetonide, and the patient was prescribed 8.1 g/day of oral Saireito (Japanese herb). Adapalene benzoyl peroxide gel and topical tacrolimus hydrate ointment were used to treat PIE and TE. Both HSs and PIE improved;however, TE and AS did not improve. Currently, the patient is under observation. We consider this to be a very rare concurrent occurrence of diverse complications of acne vulgaris, and present the following case study.

Small-sized axial fans are used as air cooler for electric *** there is a strong demand for higher power of fans according to the increase of quantity of heat from electric ***,higher rotational speed design is conducted,although,it causes the deterioration of efficiency and the increase of ***,the adoption of contra-rotating rotors for the small-sized axial fan is proposed for the improvement of *** the case of contra-rotating rotors,it is necessary to design the rotor considering the unsteady flow condition of each front and rear *** the present paper,the fan performance of the contra-rotating small-sized axial fan with 100mm diameter at a designed and a partial flow rates is shown,and the unsteady flow conditions at the inlet and the outlet of each front and rear rotor are clarified with unsteady numerical ***,the relation between the performance and the unsteady flow condition of the contra-rotating small-sized axial fan is discussed and the methods to improve the performance are considered.

Finding the right balance between timber production and the management of forest-dependent wildlife species,present a difficult challenge for forest resource managers and policy makers in Okinawa,Japan.A possible explanation of this can be found in the unique nature of the forest management area which is populated with various kinds of rare and endangered *** issue has been brought to light as a result of the nomination of northern Okinawa Island in 2018 as a candidate for World Natural Heritage *** nomination has raised public awareness to the possibility of conflicting management objectives between timber extraction and the conservation of habitat for forest-dependent wildlife *** exclusively for one objective over the other may fail to meet the demand for both forest products and wildlife habitat,ultimately jeopardizing the stability of human and wildlife *** is therefore important to achieve a better balance between the objective of timber production and conservation of wildlife *** the significance of this subject area,current ongoing discussions on how to effectively manage for forest resources,often lack scientific basis to make sound judgement or evaluate tradeoffs between conflicting *** the effect of these forest management activities on wildlife habitat provides useful and important information needed to make forest management and policy *** this study we develop a spatial timber harvest scheduling model that incorporates habitat suitability index(HSI)models for the Okinawa Rail(Gallirallus okinawae),an endangered avian species found on Okinawa,*** illustrate how the proposed coupling model assembles spatial information,which ultimately aids the study of forest management effects on wildlife habitat,we apply these models to a forest area in Okinawa and conduct a simple simulation analysis.

Concept design of an HTS linear power generator for wave energy conversion

We show a conceptual structure for a wave energy converter,which features a direct‐drive linear power generator with REBaCuO high‐temperature superconducting(HTS)bulk field poles and driven by a heaving buoy.A dual translator power generation system of the proposed concept structure is a linear generator in which both the HTS bulks and armature copper coils move in opposite directions simultaneously.A performance analysis of our linear generator was conducted using a finite‐element electromagnetic field analysis *** results of the analysis were compared between the HTS dual translator linear power generator and the HTS single translator linear power *** maximum electromagnetic force and the average output power of the HTS dual translator are around 5%and 11%higher than that of the HTS single *** further present the results of the analysis regarding the influence of reducing the stroke length of the linear generator translator on the output power,where the output power for the HTS dual translator system increased up to a factor of two,in comparison to the HTS single translator counterpart,for the same reduction of stroke length.

Experimental Study and Finite Element Polycrystal Model Simulation of the Cold Rolling Textures in a Powder Metallurgy Processed Pure Aluminum Plate

Ingot metallurgy (IM) aluminum has long been the subject and attracted the attention of many metallurgists and textural researchers of materials. Due to the introduction of large amounts of ex situ interfaces, however, the textures in powder metallurgy (PM) processed aluminum has been rarely reported. In this article, a pure aluminum plate was prepared via PM route. The starting billet was first produced with uni-axially cold compaction and flat hot-extrusion and then followed by cold rolling processes. The hot-extruded and cold rolling deformation textures of the pure PM aluminum at 50%, 80% and 90% cold rolling reductions were studied by orientation distribution functions (ODFs) analysis. The finite element polycrystal model (FEPM) was finally utilized to simulate the cold rolling textural evolution at various stages of cold rolling. In FEPM simulation, the initial hot-extruded textures were taken into account as inputs. The results showed that typical β-fiber texture formed in pure PM aluminum with the cold rolling reduction increased till 80%, and there was not much change after excessive cold rolling deformation. Homogeneous slip is not the only deformation mode in PM processed pure aluminum plate at over 80% cold rolling reduction. The experimental results were qualitatively in good agreement with the simulated ones.

A User-friendly Living Cationic Polymerization: Degenerative Chaintransfer Polymerization of Vinyl Ethers by Simply Using Mixtures of Weak and Superstrong Protonic Acids

Mixtures of a weak protonic acid and a trace amount of superstrong protonic acid were used for the simple control of the cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers via a degenerative chain-transfer mechanism, in which the former acid works as a precursor of the chain transfer agent (CTA) or the dormant species and the latter works as a source of the cationic propagating species. The addition of mixtures of phosphoric acid dibutyl ester ((n=BuO)2PO2H) or 1 -octanethiol (n-C8H17SH) and a trace amount of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH) to a solution of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE) at -78℃ resulted in polymers with controlled molecular weights, which were basically determined by the feed ratio of IBVE to the weak protonic acid, and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn≈ 1.1). These results were almost the same as those obtained using their prepared adducts of IBVE as CT As in the presence of a trace amount of TfOH under similar conditions. Methanesulfonic acid (CH3SO3H), whose adduct of IBVE has not been isolated due to instability, was similarly used in conjunction with trace TfOH to result in controlled molecular weights but slightly broader MWDs (Mw/Mn = 1.2-1.8). These results indicate that the sulfoxonium ion is also an effective intermediate in the cationic DT polymerization in addition to the phosphonium and sulfonium intermediates derived from (n=BuO)2PO2H and C8H17SH, respectively. The simple living cationic polymerization was thus achieved by using a combination of a weak protonic acid and a trace amount of TfOH, which are both easily available, low cost, free from metal, and easy to handle, without need for preparation of the initiator.

Effect of bending and tension deformation on the texture evolution and stretch formability of Mg-Zn-RE-Zr alloy
