Ectopic hamartomatous thymoma(EHT )is a rare benign tumor. We present a case of EHT, which was seen as subcutaneous mass on the left supraclavicular area in a 19-year-old man. The tumor consisted of spindle cells, epithelial cells, adipose cells, and a small amount of lymphocytes, as described previously. Immunohistochemically, spindle cells were positive for keratin, a-smooth muscle actin, CD34 and vimentin, but negative for desmin and S- 100 protein. Lymphocytes were positive for CD45RO but negative for CD20, CD1a, and CD99. Approximately, 5% of cells were positive for MIB-1 and no cells stained for p53 and bcl-2. Recognition of EHT is important and needs to be differentiated from high-grade sarcomas such as synovial sarcoma or glandular malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor.

Molecular Evolution of the Cytochrome b Gene in Geographically Isolated Populations of Oryzias Latipes

The mitochondrial cytochrome b gene was isolated from the caudal fin of Oryzias latipes and PCR was undertaken to determine phylogeny. The nucleotide sequence of the complete cytochrome b gene including the 5’ and 3’ ends was 1,143 base pairs (bp) and 1,137 bp encoding 380 and 378 amino acids in the K-11 strain and HS strain, respectively. In addition, higher substitutions both in base and amino acid residues occurred more frequently between the former control (Hd-rR strain) and HS strains than the K-11 strain. Approximately similar values in polymorphism, as assessed by restriction endonuclease digestion, were detected when utilizing 20 different enzymes. Therefore, the evolutionary processes were unlikely to involve common ancestors, especially between the K-11 strain and HS strains, in O. latipes populations in Japan. The sequence had been deposited in GenBank Data Base under accession number AB480878 (K-11 strain) and AB480879 (HS strain).

Os/Os ratios and osmium concentrations were analyzed in sedimentary reference materials JSd-3,JMS-1,and JMS-2,issued by the Geological Survey of Japan,using the isotope dilution method with negative thermal ionization mass spectrometry(ID-N-TIMS).The chemical procedures used in this study are based on Carius tube digestion combined with carbon tetrachloride extraction to separate *** obtained Os/Os ratios of JSd-3,JMS-1,and JMS-2 were 0.941- 1.149,0.3894-0.465,and 0.747-0.848,respectively,and their Os abundances were 27.07-39.32 ppt,80.8-106.6 ppt,and 281-317.2 ppt,*** among the samples presumably reflect differences in sources and depositional *** Os isotopic ratios and abundances were variable within individual *** relative 95%confidence intervals of Os concentrations and isotopic ratios were respectively 13%and 6.2%for JSd-3,15%and 9.8%for JMS-1,and 4.3%and 4.2%for *** variations probably reflect the heterogeneity of the original rock of each reference *** concentration and high isotope ratio of JSd-3 probably results from the derivation of the original rocks from continental components with low Os abundance and elevated Os/*** of anthropogenic Os were inferred in JMS-1,a nearshore sediment from an urbanized locality,which had high Os contents and relatively low Os isotopic *** elevated Os concentrations and high Os/Os in JMS-2,a pelagic clay,may reflect the scavenging of Os in seawater into Mn-Fe oxyhydroxides deposited on the seafloor.

PURPOSE: To report a novel mutation in the RLBP1 gene and optical coherence to mographic findings in a Japanese patient with retinitis punctata albescens. DESI GN: Observational case report. METHODS: The RLBP1 gene was analyzed by direct ge nomic sequencing. A complete ophthalmologic examination was performed. RESULTS: Compound heterozygous mutations in the RLBP1 gene were identified in the patient . The mutations were a novel missense Arg103Trp mutation and a missense Arg234Tr p mutation, the causative mutation of Bothnia dystrophy. The patient’s fundi sh owed numerouswhite dots with diffuse retinalmottling and bilateralmacular degene ration. Her visual function deteriorated progressively during 12-year follow-u p. Optical coherence tomography demonstrated decreased retinal thickness, especi ally the photoreceptor layer. CONCLUSION: A novel mutation in RLBP1 gene was fou nd in a Japanese patient with retinitis punctata albescens. Degenerative changes of the outer retina were detected by optical coherence tomography.

Abstract Abstract Background: It is unclear whether infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) affects arteioscle-rosis. We performed a cross-sectional study to clarify the effect of HBV and HCV infection on arteriosclerosis. Methods: The study subjects were 1806 healthy individuals who visited Shimane Environment and Health Public Corporation for routine medical check-ups. Serum levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholest-erol, triglycerides, and blood glucose were investigated inll subjects. The degree of arteriosclerosis was assessed using systolic blood pressure, the bilateral ankle brachial index (ABI), the heart-carotid pulse wave velocity (HCPWV), and the heart-ankle PWV(HAPWV). These cardiovascular parameters were compared between control subjects and subjects with HBV and HCV infection, using analysis of covariance to adjust for confounding factors (sex, age, body mass index, and smoking and drinking). Results: Of the 1806 subjects, 39 and 31 were diagnosed as positive for HBV and HCV infection, respectively. The remaining 1736 were considered to be the controls. Adjusted serum lipid levels in the subjects with HBV and those with HCV infection tended to be lower than those in the control subjects. Adjusted arteriosclerotic parameters in the subjects with HBV and HCV infectionwere similar to those in the control subjects, even after adjusting for serum lipid levels. Conclusions: Infection with HBV or HCV does not influence the severity of arteriosclerosis in healthy subjects.

Twenty-five-and 22-y-old Japanese women, who are cousins, presented with distal skin fragility, widespread small, pigmented macules, and toenail deformity. Blisters occurred between the epidermis and the dermis with degeneration of the basal cells, suggesting epidermolysis bullosa simplex with mottled pigmentation (EBS-MP). Electron microscopy of the pigmented spots demonstrated vacuolization of basal cells as well as disturbed junctional structures and incontinence of pigmentation. Gene analysis resulted in detection of a heterozygous deletion of a guanine nucleotide in exon 9 at position 1649. P25L mutation was not detected in either case. It is possible that EBS-MP occurs not only based on the P25L mutation of the keratin 5 molecule, but also because of other types of mutations of epidermal keratin genes.

Purpose: To compare the outcome of early treatment at the initial stage 3 moderate phase of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) with that at prethreshold ROP. Methods: The outcome of treatment of 117 very-low-birth-weight infants was reviewed. Sixty-eight infants underwent their first treatment at prethreshold ROP (group A). The other 49 infants underwent their first treatment at the initial stage 3 moderate phase of ROP (pre-prethreshold ROP) (group B). The first treatment was performed by laser photocoagulation or cryotherapy. Eleven clinical variables were included in the evaluation of the two groups. The outcome of treatment of the two groups was compared as favorable or unfavorable. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the relation between each independent variable and an unfavorable outcome. Results: The extent of contiguous stage 3 moderate ROP and that of cumulative stage 3 moderate ROP were significantly smaller in group B. There were nine unfavorable outcomes in group A, but none in group B. Logistic regression analysis showed that the extent of cumulative stage 3 moderate ROP and the presence of zone 1 retinopathy were major predictive factors for unfavorable outcome in the treatment of very-low-birth-weight infants. Conclusion: Early treatment at the initial stage 3 moderate phase of ROP decreases the occurrence of severe retinal changes.
