We report a facile and rapid method for fabrication of composite particlesconsisting of a polystyrene (PS) core and a uniform silver shell. The process involves the PScolloid surface swelling, the anchoring of silver ions and nanoparticles onto the surfaces, and thesubsequent growth of metal seeds in a short period. The present approach has the advantages ofsimplicity and high efficiency. The TEM images show the morphology of the obtained PS core-silvershell particles, and their chemical composition and crystallinity are analysed by x-ray *** our knowledge, this is the first study based on swelling PS surface for synthesis ofsilver-coated PS particles and may be implemented for preparing other metal-coated PS particles.

Arrays of Ni nanowires with different wire diameters were prepared by electrodepositing the corresponding material into cylindrical pores of anodic alumina templates. A transition of the easy magnetization direction has been observed from the wire axis to the transverse direction when the wire diameter increases. It is analytically obtained that this phenomenon is mainly originated from the competition of shape anisotropy and the magnetostatic coupling among the Ni wires. Based on dipolar interaction model, numerical calculation is performed to study the interaction among the nanowires, and the result is in agreement with the experimental data.

Thin films of Nd3+-substituted Bi3.15Nd0.85Ti3O12 (BNT) were fabricated on the (111 Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates by a metalorganic deposition (MOD) technique. These thin films are possessed of a single-phase bismuth-layered structure showing the preferred (001) and (117) orientation. The values of the remanent polarization Pr and coercive field Ec of the BNT thin film are 27μC/cm2 and 157 kV/cm, respectively. The results of fatigue and retention tests revealed that the BNT thin film was not fatigued up to 1.44 x 1010 switching cycles and the retained charge was unchanged after 1 x 105s. The leakage current behaviour of the BNT thin film was investigated at room temperature and their conduction mechanisms were also discussed. The I-V characteristics of the film show the ohmic behaviour for applied field lower than 40 kV/cm. Nonlinearity in the I-V behaviour was observed at an applied field above 40 kV/cm. In the high field region (E > 95 kV/cm) the sample shows Schottky emission.

We have numerically studied the structural organization in binary immiscible fluids with fixed particles. The particles that have a finite excluded volume and a selective affinity for one fluid component have a significant influence on the organization process, where the hydrodynamic flows induced by the interface motion are suppressed and the domain growth is slowed down at late stages. Two different cases with weak and strong preferential interactions are considered, and the results show that the particles in the former can be left in the unfavourable phase during the process but are permanently surrounded by the favourable phase in the latter. The study indicates that the system would develop into a dynamical steady state and the final domain size might be dependent not only on the number of particles but also on the preferential interaction strength

Tubular Co_3O_4 nanostructures were prepared from cobalt nanowires embedded in an anodic alumina template. The morphologies of nanowires/nanotubes were studied by transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction was used in the analysis of the nanostructures and phases. A possible formation mechanism of the process from nanowires to nanotubes is discussed. The vibrating sample magnetometer measurements show anomalous magnetic behaviour of the cobalt oxide nanotubes at low temperature.

The effect of the coadsorption of CO and O2 on the Ziff-Gulari-Barshad surface catalytic reaction system is studied by Monte Carlo simulation. The coadsorption of both species adds an extra reaction step to the classical Ziff-Gulari-Barshad model. It is shown that the second-order phase transition from the reactive state to the O-passivated state in the Ziff-Gulari-Barshad model is eliminated, and the production rate of CO2 increases linearly along the fraction yco of CO in gas phase when it is low, in agreement with experimental results. We also find that the increase of the probability of the coadsorption leads to the decrease of the critical value of yco of the discontinuous phase transition to the CO-passivated state.

We report a feasible approach to the preparation of monodispersed metal-shell composite microspheres based on a combination of surface reaction and surface seeding techniques. The method was implemented for coating polystyrene (PS) spheres with silver shell having a variable thickness by controlling the amount of reagents in the reaction procedure. These composite spherical particles in dimensions of the submicrometer range may become attractive building blocks for the creation of metallo-dielectric photonic band gap materials when they are organized into crystals.

We improve a previous theory of doped Mott insulators with duality between pairing and magnetism by a further duality transform. As the result we obtained a quantum Ginzburg-Landau theory describing the Cooper pair condensate and the dual of spin condensate. We address the superconductivity by doping a Mott insulator, which we call the Mott superconductivity. Some fingerprints of such novelty in cuprates are the scaling between neutron resonance energy and superfluid density, and the induced quantized spin moment by vortices or Zn impurity (together with circulating charge super-current to be checked by experiments).
