The coupling between guided optical waves in magneto-optic fiber Bragg gratings （MFBGs） with linear birefringence is investigated using the eigen-mode and coupled-mode approaches. The relationship between the polarization-dependent loss （PDL） and the eigen states of polarization （SOPs） in the MFBGs is discussed. Only the MFBCs with low linear birefringence are applied to the peak PDL-based magnetic field measurement, after which the linear dynamic range is determined using the relative magnitude of linear and magnetically induced circular birefringence. In this letter, a theoretical model is presented to explain the experimental results and help develop novel MFBG-based devices.

We design and fabricate an integrated optical electric field sensor with segmented electrode for intensive impulse electric field measurement. The integrated optical sensor is based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with segmented electrodes. The output/input character of the sensing system is analysed and measured. The maximal detectable electric field range （-75 kV/m to 245kV/m） is obtained by analysing the results. As a result, the integrated optics electric field sensing system is suitable for transient intensive electric field measurement investigation.

A novel label abstraction and erasion scheme based on a Fabry-Perot semiconductor optical amplifier （FP-SOA） is proposed for all-optical separation of the bit-serial label from payload and its performance is investigated by simulation. Important features of this scheme are that it does not make use of any high-speed electronics and only one device is needed. be realized with the extinction ratio of 9.72 and 7.05 OCIS codes： 060.4510, 060.1810, 070.4340. Using this scheme, label abstraction and erasion can dB, respectively.

A novel packet format with non-return-to-zero （NRZ） label and duobinary carrier-suppressed return-to-zero （DCS-RZ） payload is proposed for optical packet switching networks. NRZ label is followed by DCS-RZ payload with a certain guard time. The spectra of the low-rate NRZ label locate around the optical carrier frequency where some parts of the corresponding spectra of the high-rate DCS-RZ payload have been suppressed due to DCS-RZ modulation. At the switching node, the label or payload extraction can be realized simply through an optical bandpass or notch filter respectively. The feasibility of the scheme is verified by the simulation on the famous photonic design platform designed by Virtual Photonics Inc. （VPI）. The effects of optical filter bandwidth on the received signal quality are discussed by analyzing bit error rate （BER） and contrast ratio performances.

Microwave magnetostatic waves （MSWs） as moving gratings in magneto-optic （MO） film can lead to the Bragg diffraction of guided optical waves （GOWs）. The MO coupling characteristics are responsible for the amplitude and phase frequency spectra of diffrazted pulses and even result in the compression of chirped optical pulses in time domain. We theoretically investigate the noncollinear diffraction of linearly chirped Gaussian optical pulses by continuous magnetostatic forward volume waves in detail. For a given chirped optical pulse, with the increase of phase-mismatching slopes, the compression efficiency （CE） is gradually improved up to the maximum followed by the transition of diffracted pulses from single peak to multi peaks. The larger the chirp parameter is, the smaller the required phase-mismatching slope to achieve the maximal CE is. However, the rise of the chirp parameter or phase-mismatching slope reduces the relative peak intensity of the diffracted pulse. Lastly, it is pointed out that the phase-mismatching slope can be greatly increased by using the high-order modes of MSWs and GOWs.

This letter proposes a new burst assembly technique for supporting QoS in optical burst switching (OBS) networks. It consists of the adaptive-threshold burst assembly mechanism and QoS-based random offset-time scheme. The assembly mechanism, which is fit well to multi-class burst assembly, not only matches with IP QoS mechanism based on packet classification, and also utilizes fairly and efficiently assembly capacity. Based on token-bucket model and burst segment selective discard (BSSD), the offset-time scheme can smooth the traffic to support OBS QoS. The simulation results show that the technique can improve the performance in terms of packet loss probability (PLP).

An integrated optical E-field probe with the segmented electrode using LiNbO3 Mach-Zehnder （M-Z） waveguides is proposed and an equivalent circuit of the segmented electrode is given. According to the circuit theory, the electrode structure of the probe is designed. The unpackaged size of the fabricated probe is as small as 60× 6 × 0.5 （mm）. The measured results show that the half wavelength voltage is 7.7 V, the ±5 dB baseband range is 3 GHz, and the minimum detectable field is lower than 90 dB.μV/m （bandwidth 100 Hz）. Therefore it can be used in the electromagnetic compatibility （EMC） measurements. OCIS codes： 130.3120, 130.6010, 230.4110.

A tunable broadband metamaterial absorber is demonstrated at microwave frequencies in this paper. The meta- material absorber is composed of ferrite slabs with large resonance beamwidths and a copper wire. The theoretical analysis for the effective media parameters is presented to show the mechanism for achieving the perfect absorptivity characteristic. The numerical results of transmission, reflectance, and absorptivity indicate that the metamaterial ab- sorber exhibits a near perfect impedance-match to free space and a high absorptivity of 98.2% for one layer and 99.97% for two layers at 9.9 GHz. The bandwidth with the absorptivity above 90% is about 2.3 GHz. Moreover, the absorption band can be shifted linearly in a wide frequency range by adjusting the magnetic bias. This metamaterial absorber opens a way to prepare perfectly matched layers for engineering applications.
