Acoustic characteristics of the detonation sound wave generated by a pulse detonation engine with an annular nozzle,including peak sound pressure, directivity, and A duration, are experimentally investigated while utilizing gasoline as fuel and oxygen-enriched air as oxidizer. Three annular nozzle geometries are evaluated by varying the ratio of inner cone diameter to detonation tube exit diameter from 0.36 to 0.68. The experimental results show that the annular nozzles have a significant effect on the acoustic characteristics of the detonation sound wave. The annular nozzles can amplify the peak sound pressure of the detonation sound wave at 90° while reducing it at 0° and 30°. The directivity angle of the detonation sound wave is changed by annular nozzles from 30° to 90°. The A duration of the detonation sound wave at 90° is also increased by the annular nozzles. These changes indicate that the annular nozzles have an important influence on the acoustic energy distribution of the detonation sound wave, which amplify the acoustic energy in a direction perpendicular to the tube axis and weaken it along the direction of the tube axis.

In this study, kerosene fuel-rich gas produced by the combustion in the gas generator was used as the fuel and oxygen-rich air was used as the oxidant to investigate the propagation characteristics of the rotating detonation wave (RDW). The initiation of the kerosene fuel-rich gas and propagation process of the RDW were analyzed. The influences of the oxygen content in the oxidizer, kerosene mass flow rate of the gas generator, and temperature of the kerosene fuel-rich gas on the propagation process of the RDW were studied. The experimental results revealed that the propagation velocity of the RDW could be improved by increasing the three parameters mentioned above with the kerosene mass flow rate as the strongest factor. The minimum oxygen content that could successfully initiate and maintain the stable propagation of the RDW was 32%, achieving the RDW velocity of 1141.9 m/s. The RDW mainly propagated as two-counter rotating waves and a single wave when the equivalent ratios were 0.62–0.79 and 0.85–0.87, respectively. The highest RDW velocity of 1637.2 m/s was obtained when the kerosene mass flow rate, oxygen content, and equivalent ratio were 74.6 g/s, 44%, and 0.87, respectively.

In order to realize the ballistic control of the railgun and the flight stability of the projectile, a new type of railgun is designed, which can control the muzzle velocity and rotation rate. The method of the muzzle velocity and overload control is to adjust the voltage or other parameters of pulse power supply. It would be easy to change velocity accurately in large wide. Another widespread concern problem is launching the spinning stability projectile by railgun. This paper designed a new structure of additional rails to generate an unsymmetrical magnetic field to produce rotational torque in armature. The structure is simple and can control the rotation rate by linear changing the barrel parameters. The calculation formulas of interior ballistic are derived by Biot-Safar law. The important parameter is the deflection angle of the additional rails relative to the symmetry plane of main rail. The larger the angle, the greater the rotation torque generated in the armature. To maintain the flight stability of the projectile, the barrel structural parameters should be proportional to the projectile structural parameters. When changing the muzzle velocity, the rotation rate will also be the equal proportion change. So that the gyro stability is the same. The experiment proves that the railgun designed in this paper can launch the projectile to rotate. And the rotational projectile may not cause the transition or much arcs. This method expands the application of the railgun.

The electrodynamic behavior of a medium caliber railgun launcher has been studied based on an electromechanical coupling model,which uses a unified modeling method for both electromagnetic and electromechanical field.This model adopts a material equivalent method to simulating the sliding contact behavior for the in-bore armature.An embedded node encoding program during field meshing operation provides good load transfer accuracy between electromagnetic field and mechanical field.Dynamic properties of in-bore magnetic field are firstly simulated and a subsequent dynamic analysis is conducted by mapping element results from electromagnetic analysis step to structure analysis step.The electromechanical-elastic response of the barrel is studied under the excitation current.The numerical model has shown reliability compared to experimental results.

In this paper,the momentum conservation equation in the longitudinal direction for simple railgun was deduced.Then,a three-dimensional model was established and the finite element method was utilized to simulate the problem.Based on the simulation,some results such as the surface force on the electromagnetic field,the electromagnetic force on the conductor in the longitudinal direction were obtained.Besides,the surface force density on different longitudinal section of railgun was analyzed and discussed in details.The results showed that the momentum of the railgun system was conserved when the surface force of the electromagnetic field was contained.Moreover,large amount of longitudinal force was transmitted to the breech by the electromagnetic field in the form of surface force.The exact position and distribution of recoil were related to the current input device.

The contact resistance between the armature and rails is an important indicator of the contact characteristics in electromagnetic launches.As the contact resistance depends not only on the contact state but also on the contact stress and temperature,there are some limitations in analyzing the contact characteristics using only the contact resistance.In this paper,the contact characteristics of the augmented railgun are analyzed by the combination of contact resistance and sliding friction coefficient.Firstly,the theoretical calculation model of the contact resistance and friction coefficient of the augmented electromagnetic railgun is established.Then the contact resistance and friction coefficient are calculated by the measured values of the muzzle voltage,rail current and armature displacement.Finally,the contact characteristics are analyzed according to the features of the waveforms of the contact resistance and the friction coefficient,and the analysis conclusions are verified by experimental rail images.The results showed that:the aluminum melt film gradually formed on the contact surface reduces the contact resistance and the friction coefficient;the wear and erosion of the armature cause deterioration of the contact state;after the transition,the reliability of the sliding contact between the armature and rails decreases,resulting in an increase in contact resistance.

Acoustic characteristics of a pulse detonation engine（PDE） with and without an ellipsoidal reflector are numerically and experimentally investigated. A two-dimensional（2 D） non-splitting unstructured triangular mesh Euler solver based on the space-time conservation element and solution element（CE/SE） method is employed to simulate the flow field of a PDE.The numerical results clearly demonstrate the external flow field of the PDE. The effect of an ellipsoidal reflector on the flow field characteristic near the PDE exit is investigated. The formation process of reflected shock wave and reflected jet shock are reported in detail. An acoustic measurement system is established for the PDE acoustic testing. The experimental results show that the ellipsoidal reflector changes the sound waveform and directivity of PDE sound. The reflected shock wave and reflected jet shock result in two more positive pressure peaks in the sound waveform. The ellipsoidal reflector changes the directivity of PDE sound from 20 to 0. It is found that the peak sound pressure level（PSPL） and overall sound pressure level（OASPL） each obtain an increment when the PDE is installed with a reflector. The maximum relative increase ratio of PSPL and OASPL are obtained at the focus point F2, whose values are 6.1% and 6.84% respectively. The results of the duration of the PDE sound indicate that the reflecting and focusing wave generated by the reflector result in the increment of A duration and B duration before and near focus point F2. Results show that the ellipsoidal reflector has a great influence on the acoustic characteristic of PDE sound. The research is helpful for understanding the influence of an ellipsoidal reflector on the formation and propagation process of PDE sound.

A gouging phenomenon with a hypervelocity sliding electrical contact in railgun not only shortens the rail lifetime but also affects the interior ballistic performance. In this paper, a 3-D numerical model was introduced to simulate and analyze the generation mechanism and evolution of the rail gouging phenomenon. The results show that a rail surface bulge is an important factor to induce gouging. High density and high pressure material flow on the contact surface, obliquely extruded into the rail when accelerating the armature to a high velocity, can produce gouging. Both controlling the bulge size to a certain range and selecting suitable materials for rail surface coating will suppress the formation of gouging. The numerical simulation had a good agreement with experiments, which validated the computing model and methodology are reliable.

Plasma generator is a core component in an electrothermal-chemical(ETC) launcher. Its work state directly influences the launch efficiency of a system. The interaction between plasma and propellants is a very important mechanism in ETC technology. Based on the transient radiation model and open air plasma jet experiment, the mechanism of plasma ignition process is analyzed. Results show that the surface temperature of local solid propellant grain can quickly achieve the ignition temperature under the action of early transient plasma radiation. But it needs enough time to maintain the high energy flow to make self-sustained combustion of solid propellant grains. Because of the limited space characteristics of transient radiation, the near-field propellant grains can gain enough energy by the strong transient radiation to be ignited and achieve self-sustained combustion. The far-field propellant grains mainly gain the energy by the activated particles in plasma jet to be ignited and self-sustained combustion. Experiments show that plasma jet always has a high flow velocity in the area of the cartridge. Compared with conventional ignition, the solid propellant grains can obtain more quick and uniform ignition and self-sustained combustion by this kind of ablation controlled arc(ACA) plasma via energy skin effect of propellant grains, pre-heat temperature mechanism and high efficient jet diffusion.

Numerical study on evolution of subharmonic varicose low-speed streaks in turbulent channel flow

The evolution of two spanwise-aligned low-speed streaks in a wall turbulent flow, triggered by the instability of the subharmonic varicose （SV） mode, is studied by a direct numerical simulation （DNS） method in a small spatial-periodic channel. The results show that the SV low-speed streaks are self-sustained at the early stage, and then transform into subharmonic sinuous （SS） low-speed streaks. Initially, the streamwise vortex sheets are formed by shearing, and then evolve into zigzag vortex sheets due to the mutual induction. As the intensification of the SV low-speed streaks becomes prominent, the tilted streamwise vortex tubes and the V-like streamwise vortex tubes can be formed simultaneously by increasing ＋~. When the SV low-speed streaks break down, new zigzag streamwise vortices will be generated, thus giving birth to the next sustaining cycle of the SV low-speed streaks. When the second breakdown happens, new secondary V-like streamwise vortices instead of zigzag streamwise vortices will be generated. Because of the sweep motion of the fluid induced by the secondary V-like streamwise vortices, each decayed low-speed streak can be divided into two parts, and each part combines with the part of another streak, finally leading to the formation of SS low-speed streaks.
