Enhanced strength and ductility in Ti46Al4Nb1Mo alloys via boron addition

To improve the strength and ductility of Ti Al alloys by second phase, Ti46 Al4 Nb1 Mo alloys doped with different B content(0.4%, 0.8%, 1.2%, 1.6% and 2.0%, atomic percent, hereafter in at.%, referred to as TNMx B) were prepared. Macro/microstructure evolution, mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of the alloys were studied systematically. Results showed that the microstructure of TNM-0.4 B and TNM-0.8 B alloy remained columnar dendrites, and the secondary dendritic arms of columnar grains were more obvious. When the content of B is 1.2%, the columnar dendrites transformed to equiaxed grains, and theα2/γ lamellae colony size was further refined in TNM-1.6 B and TNM-2.0 B alloy. The morphologies and kinds of the borides were changed with increasing B content, XRD results showed that Ti B phase appeared with 1.6%B content, and both Ti B and Ti B2 phase formed in TNM-2.0 B alloy. There were straight and curved Ti B phases located around grain boundaries in TNM-0.4 B and TNM-0.8 B alloy, and when the content of B increased to 1.2%, the curved Ti B phases were reduced, while the tiny and straight Ti B phases increased. With further increasing B content to 1.6% and 2.0%, the tiny and straight Ti B phases were coarser. Compressive testing results showed that the mechanical properties of the TNM alloy were enhanced with increasing B content. The maximum strength and strain of TNM alloy were 2339 MPa and33.7% with 1.6% B addition. The compressive strength and strain were mainly enhanced via refinement of lamellar colony and formation of Ti B, and it is found that pile-up of dislocations and deformed twins promoted by Ti B are predominant in improving the mechanical properties of TNM alloys with higher strength and strain.

Morphological modification of Mg_(2)Si phase and strengthening mechanism in Mg_(2)Si/Al composites by Eu addition and T6 heat treatment

In order to improve mechanical properties of Mg_(2)Si/Al composites,Eu element was added to mod-ify Mg_(2)Si morphology,and T6 heat treatment was used to control Mg_(2)Si morphology and precipitate strengthening *** and morphology of Mg_(2)Si were observed by synchrotron X-ray to-mography and TEM,and first-principles calculations were also performed to testify the effect of Eu *** show that the size of primary Mg_(2)Si particles decreases and eutectic Mg_(2)Si phase trans-forms from lamellar to fibrous by Eu *** heat treatment,sharp angles of primary Mg_(2)Si par-ticles passivate,and eutectic Mg_(2)Si dissolves and appears to be short ***,nano-sizedβ"phase precipitates in the *** morphology of Mg_(2)Si with Eu modification,TEM results show that Eu impedes the growing of Mg_(2)Si,which is verified by first-principles calculations that Eu atom preferentially adsorbs on Mg_(2)Si{100}*** adsorption and suppression growing of Mg_(2)Si transform the morphology of Mg_(2)Si and thus improve the *** and elongation of the heat-treated Eu modified composites are 281 MPa and 8.4%,which improved 81%and 200%compared to the as-cast Al-15%Mg_(2)Si *** strengthening mechanism mainly results from precipitation strengthening of nano-sizedβ"precipitates in the heat-treated composite.

Integrated Extrusion-Shear Forming Process of the Solid-State Recycled AZ80 Magnesium Alloy via hot Press Sintering

The consolidation recycled AZ80 billets were successfully fabricated through the cold press and hot press sintering of the AZ80 metal *** consolidation recycled billets sintered at 350℃present the comparable compressive properties and inferior tensile properties compared with the initial cast *** defects in the consolidation recycled billet were inclined to propagate along the bond interface between the metal chips during tension,which resulted in the inferior tensile properties of the recycled *** recycled billets were then subjected to the integrated extrusion-shear(ES) *** homogeneous finer dynamic recrystallization grains with an average grain size of 6 μm can be obtained in the shear deformation zone and extrusion sizing zone through integrated ES process at 300℃with an extrusion velocity of 0.6 mm/*** recycled billets after integrated ES forming process present rival tensile properties compared with the initial cast billets after integrated ES forming with the same extrusion parameters,which can be ascribed to that the integrated ES forming can nearly eliminate the defects through the severe compressive and shear *** solid-state recycling process through hot press sintering and subsequent integrated ES process can fabricate the consolidation recycled AZ80 rod,which demonstrates the comparable tensile properties with the cast-extrusion rod.

Enhancement of strength and electrical conductivity for a dilute Al-Sc-Zr alloy via heat treatments and cold drawing

Developing heat-resistant conductors with high strength and high electrical conductivity is a key issue in the electrical conductor industries, as the ever-increasing power transmission poses higher requirement on the thermal stability of electrical conductor wires. Dilute Al-Sc-Zr alloys are considered as promising candidates due to the excellent heat resistance and high electrical conductivity, but the low strength always limits their application on electrical wires. Yet, few efforts on process design have been made in dilute Al-Sc-Zr alloys to enhance the strength. Here, various kinds of processing paths via combination of cold drawing, ageing and/or annealing were conducted to improve the strength and electrical conductivity of a dilute Al-Sc-Zr alloy. Results show that enhanced strength and electrical conductivity were obtained after cold drawing + ageing or pre-ageing + cold drawing + annealing treatments *** properties(194 MPa in ultimate tensile strength and 61% IACS in electrical conductivity) were obtained through cold drawing followed by ageing. Microstructure evolution which affects strength and electrical conductivity was systematically investigated using TEM and 3 DAP. The enhanced strength was mainly attributed to the suitable interactions between strain strengthening and precipitation strengthening. The enhancement in electrical conductivity was caused by precipitation of solute atoms and recovery of defects. These results provide foundations for the processing design of Al-Sc-Zr conducting wires with good properties and push forward their potential application in heat resistant conductor industries.

Influences of the Texture Characteristic and Interdendritic LPSO Phase Distribution on the Tensile Properties of Mg–Gd–Y–Zn–Zr Sheets Through hot Rolling

The Mg–Gd–Y–Zn–Zr alloy sheets with different texture characteristics and distribution of the interdendritic long periodstacking ordered(LPSO) phases were fabricated through altering the final rolling reduction(FRR). The results showed that the texture characteristic was closely related to FRR and affected the tensile properties of the resulted sheets to some extent. The Schmid factor(SF) of the basal 〈a〉 slip improved with further FRR, which was ascribed to that the dynamic recrystallization(DRX) grains expand into the deformed grains with basal texture. However, the improvement of the tensile yield strength(TYS) with further FRR indicates that the strengthening effect from DRX grains surpasses the weakening effect from the elevated SF. The formation of the line-distributed interdendritic 14 H-LPSO phases can also affect the tensile properties of the resulted sheets. The line-distributed interdendritic 14 H-LPSO phases along rolling direction(RD) can act as reinforcing fiber and contribute to the higher TYS along RD and 45° to some extent, which resulted in the higher TYS along 45° compared with that along transverse direction(TD) for each resulted sheet under the circumstance of approximate basal 〈a〉 and pyramid 〈c + a〉 friction stress. Thus, the tensile yield strength is not only related to the texture, but also depends on the grain size and line-distributed interdendritic LPSO phases. The micro-cracks spread perpendicular to the tension direction, and thus, the larger cracks form within the line-distributed 14 H-LPSO phases during tension along TD, which accounts for the lower fracture elongation along TD.

The Mg-7Gd-4Y-2Zn-0.5Zr alloy chips were successfully recycled through isothermal sintering and equal channel angular pressing(ECAP).The mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of samples during the recycling process were studied in *** eutectic phases in the as-cast alloy transform into long period-stacking ordered(LPSO)phases after homogenization,which can improve the plasticity of the *** isothermal sintering,the density of the sample is lower than that of the homogenized sample,and oxide films are formed adjacent to the bonding interface of the metal ***,the plasticity of the sintered sample is *** samples are fabricated after *** the grains are not refined compared to the sintered sample,the microstructure becomes more uniform due to *** interdendritic LPSO phase and kinked 14H-LPSO phase are formed in the alloy due to the shear deformation during the ECAP process,which improves the strength and plasticity of the sample ***,the basal texture is weakened due to the Bc route of the ECAP process,which can increase the Schmid factor of the basal slip system and improve the elongation of the *** 2 ECAP passes,the fully densified recycled billet shows superior mechanical properties with an ultimate tensile strength of 307.1 MPa and elongation of 11.1%.

Research on Two-Step Hydro-Bulge Forming of Ellipsoidal Shell with Larger Axis Length Ratio

The two-step hydro-bulge forming technique was proposed to manufacture the ellipsoidal shell with the length ratio of the long axis to the short axis larger than 1.4. A central tube was introduced into the first step of the hydro-bulge forming process to constrain the over growth of the short axis during bulging,and then the central tube was replaced with two polar plates in the second step of the hydro-bulge forming process to manufacture an integral ellipsoidal shell. It is shown that the central tube restricts the growth of the short axis and simultaneously reduces the shrunk tendency of the long axis. The wrinkling occurs due to the latitudinal compressive stress at the equator at the early stage of hydro-bulge forming. However,with the increase of internal pressure,the compressive stress areas gradually decrease and finally the tensile latitudinal stress occupies approximately the whole shell,thus the wrinkles are eliminated. A sound ellipsoidal shell with the axis length ratio of 1.8 is obtained after two-step hydro bulging.

Effect of Annealing Temperature on the Shape Memory Properties of Cold-Rolled Dual-Phase Ni-Mn-Ga-Gd Alloy

The influence of annealing temperature on the shape memory effect （SME） and recovery ratio of cold-rolled dual-phase Ni58Mn25Ga16.9Gdo.1 high-temperature shape memory alloy were investigated. The results showed that the SME can be improved by appropriate annealing. SME of 6.0% and recovery ratio of 98% were observed in the rolled alloy at 550 ℃ annealing, which were larger than that of the samples annealed at other temperatures. The annealing temperature was in between the recrystallization temperatures of the martensite and 7 phase, which leads to the work-hardening state of 7 phase kept unchanged during annealing process, and therefore, the critical slip stress of y phase increased. Thus, the plastic deformation of ~ phase reduced during the compression process, and the SME increased.

The nanocrystallization behaviour of a bulk Zr-based metallic glass subjected to compressive stress is investigated in the supercooled liquid region. Compared with annealing treatments without compressive stress, compressive deformation promotes the development of nucleation and suppresses the coarsening of nanocrystallites at high temperatures.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of Ni3Al intermetallics prepared by directional solidification electromagnetic cold crucible technique

The present work focused on the Ni_3Al-based alloy with a high melting point. The aim of the research is to study the effect of withdrawal rate on the microstructures and mechanical properties of directionally solidified Ni-25 Al alloy. Ni_3 Al intermetallics were prepared at different withdrawal rates by directional solidification(DS) in an electromagnetic cold crucible directional solidification furnace. The DS samples contain Ni_3 Al and Ni Al phases. The primary dendritic spacing(λ) decreases with the increasing of withdrawal rate(V), and the volume fraction of Ni Al phase increases as the withdrawal rate increases. Results of tensile tests show that ductility of DS samples is enhanced with a decrease in the withdrawal rate.
