Dynamic emission characteristics and control strategies of air pollutants from motor vehicles in downtown Beijing,China

This study combined the real-time monitoring and investigation of traffic flows to comprehensively analyze the road traffic flow and vehicle structure in downtown Beijing.A dynamic emission inventory of motor vehicle air pollutants in downtown Beijing in 2021 was established,and the impact of these emissions on air quality was simulated and quantified,and different emission reduction control scenarios were proposed to evaluate their environmental improvement effects and explore measures to mitigate the impact of pollution *** results show that the high traffic flow and the structure of the motor vehicle emissions in downtown Beijing are the main causes of severe motor vehicle *** data shows that traffic flow in central Beijing is dominated by small passenger vehicles,while the vehicle mix is better than in other regions,with 72.0%of vehicles meeting"national V"or higher emission ***,to achieve higher air quality goals,further reducing vehicle emissions is *** on dynamic traffic flow,the average daily emissions of nitrogen oxides(NOX),particulate matters(PM_(2.5))and volatile organic compounds(VOC)from motor vehicles in central Beijing are 17.7 tons,0.6 tons and 14.0 tons,respectively,accounting for 23.0%of the city’s average daily motor vehicle *** a zero-emission zone for motor vehicles were implemented in central Beijing,the annual average emission level of pollutants will be reduced by 10.4%to 21.0%.The designation of ultra-low emission zones for motor vehicles could be effective in improving the air quality in the center of Beijing.

Monitoring and predicting highly localized weather events over a very short-term period,typically ranging from minutes to a few hours,are very important for decision makers and public *** these events usually relies on radar observations through monitoring and *** advanced high-resolution imaging and sounding observations from weather satellites,nowcasting can be enhanced by combining radar,satellite,and other data,while quantitative applications of those data for nowcasting are advanced through using machine learning *** applications include monitoring the location,impact area,intensity,water vapor,atmospheric instability,precipitation,physical properties,and optical properties of the severe storm at different stages(pre-convection,initiation,development,and decaying),identification of storm types(wind,snow,hail,etc.),and predicting the occurrence and evolution of the *** observations can provide information on the environmental characteristics in the preconvection stage and are very useful for situational awareness and storm *** paper provides an overview of recent progress on quantitative applications of satellite data in nowcasting and its challenges,and future perspectives are also addressed and discussed.

Westward Migration of Tropical Cyclone Activity in the Western North Pacific during 1982–2020:Features and Possible Causes

The westward migration of tropical cyclone(TC)activity has been identified in the western North Pacific(WNP),but the related features and causes remain ***,based on the best track data from China,Japan,and the US,and the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis data in 1982–2020,we investigate characteristics of the westward migration of the WNP TC activity with various metrics,and reveal possible causes for the migration of TC tracks through analyzing its seasonality and dependence on environmental *** results show that the WNP TCs show significant westward migrations in a number of metrics,including location of tracks,genesis,the first track point at which TC reaches its lifetime-maximum intensity,and the last track point in the TC *** is found that TC tracks exhibit more significant westward migrations in the easterly steering flow than in the westerly steering ***,the TC longitude shift shows notable seasonal variations,for which the TCs in the easterlies move further west than those in the westerlies during July–September,vice versa during October–*** dependence of the westward migration of TC tracks on background steering flow is associated with the different environmental *** westward shift in the westerly steering is mainly due to the reduced vertical wind shear(VWS),while the weakened zonal easterly steering and reduced VWS are both closely related to the westward migration in the easterly *** results have important implications for understanding current and future variations in TC longitude shift.

Peracetic acid catalytic activation using Co3O4 nanocluster decorated graphitic carbon nitride for cefapirin degradation in water

This study innovated cobalt-based catalytic nanocomposites（CCNs） for the heterogeneous activation of peracetic acid（PAA）,a green and efficient advanced oxidation process for removing antibiotics from *** Co3O4catalysts exhibit limited activity due to stable electronic *** overcome this,CCNs were synthesized using a one-step condensation method,incorporating a size control strategy that anchors Co3O4nanoclusters within 4-5 nm onto six-fold cavity of g-C3N4,simultaneously modifying the coordination environment of *** alteration significantly enhances the adsorption energy of PAA and catalytic activity compared to commercial *** improved performance of CCN2,in particular,is attributed to a shift in the cobalt d band center towards the Fermi level,facilitating electron delocalization and transfer,enhancing Co-O bonding,and accelerating PAA ***2's superior activity,with a cefapirin（CFP） degradation kinetic rate constant(k1=0.760 min-1)～11 times that of PAA direct oxidation(k1=0.070 min-1) and～5 times that of commercial Co3O4/PAA system(k1=0.164 min-1),is due to its ability to generate dominant reactive species for antibiotic degradation,including alkoxy radicals(CH3C（=O）OO·),high valence metal(CoⅣ（=O）2+),and singlet oxygen（1O2）,with the latter two being crucial for the degradation *** degradation of CFP involved three mechanisms,including direct oxidation by PAA,decarboxylation,and open-ring reactions at nitrogen *** research provides insights into developing high-activity catalysts for efficient PAA activation and antibiotic removal,leveraging the strategy of shifting the transition metal d band center.

This study investigated degradation behaviors of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug Nabumetone(NMT)and its major metabolite 6-methoxy-2-naphthylacetic acid(MNA)in the coupling process of ultraviolet and monochloramine(UV/NH2Cl).The second-order rate constants of the contaminants reacting with reactive radicals(HO·,Cl·,Cl_(2)·-,and CO_(3)·^(-))were determined by laser flash photolysis ***·and Cl·contributed predominantly with 52.3%and 21.7%for NMT degradation and 60.8%and 22.3%for MNA *** presence of chlorides retarded the degradation of NMT,while promoted the destruction of MNA,which was ascribed to the photosensitization effects of MNA under UV *** functional theory(DFT)calculations revealed that radical adduct formation(RAF)was dominant pathway for both HO·and Cl·reacting with the contaminants,and hydrogen atom transfer(HAT)preferred to occur on side chains of NMT and *** reacted with NO_(2)·through single electron transfer(SET)with the second-order rate constant calculated to be 5.35×10^(7)(mol/L)^(-1)sec^(-1),and the contribution of NO_(2)·was predicted to be 13.0%of the total rate constant of NMT in pure water,which indicated that NO_(2)·played a nonnegligible role in the degradation of *** acute toxicity and developmental toxicity of NMT were enhanced after UV/NH_(2)Cl treatment,while those of MNA were *** transformation products of both NMT and MNA exhibited higher mutagenicity than their parent *** study provides a deep understanding of the mechanism of radical degradation of NMT and MNA in the treatment of UV/NH2Cl.

Modelling smear effect of vertical drains using a diameter reduction method

Vertical drains are used to accelerate consolidation of clays in ground improvement *** zones exist around these drains,where permeability is reduced due to soil disturbance caused by the installation *** solution is widely used in practice to consider the effects of drain discharge capacity and smear on the consolidation *** this study,a computationally efficient diameter reduction method(DRM)obtained from the Hansbo solution is proposed to consider the smear effect without the need to model the smear zone *** by analytical and numerical results,a diameter reduction factor is analytically derived to reduce the diameter of the drain,while achieving similar solutions of pore pressure dissipation profile as the classical full model of the smear zone and *** the DRM,the excess pore pressure u obtained from the reduced drain in the original un-disturbed soil zone is accurate enough for practical applications in numerical *** performance of DRM is independent of soil material *** also show equally accurate performance of DRM under conditions of multi-layered soils and coupled radial-vertical groundwater flow.

Understanding the mechanisms and potential pathways of soil carbon sequestration from the biogeochemistry perspective

Soil carbon sequestration is listed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change as one of the key ways to achieve long-term “carbon neutrality” in the context of global warming. Soil carbon sequestration is a complex biogeochemical process that involves plants, microbes, and rock minerals at its core. Yet, its regulation mechanisms and promotion pathways remain unclear. This paper reviews recent progress in the related domestic and international research and provides an overview of the key processes and mechanisms of soil carbon sequestration. The main pathways for enhancing soil carbon sequestration(including plant inputs, mineral protection, microbial transformation, and rock weathering) are summarized. The paper also discusses and synthesizes how advanced biogeochemical methods and technologies may be employed to explore soil carbon sequestration mechanisms and potentials. The overall aim of this review is to improve our understanding of soil carbon sequestration as a nature-based solution to combatting climate change from the biogeochemistry perspective, and to highlight the role of fundamental research in Earth Sciences in helping to achieve China's carbon neutrality goals.

A dose-dependent bimodal switch by homologous Aux/IAA transcriptional repressors

Combinatorial interactions between different regulators diversify and enrich the chance of transcriptional regulation in eukaryotic ***,a dose-dependent functional switch of homologous transcriptional repressors has rarely been ***,we show that SHY2,an auxin/indole-3-acetic acid(Aux/IAA)repressor,exhibits a dose-dependent bimodal role in auxin-sensitive root-hair growth and gene transcrip-tion in Arabidopsis,whereas other Aux/lAA homologs consistently repress the auxin *** co-repressor(TOPLESS[TPL])-binding affinity of a bimodal Aux/IAA was lower than that of a consistently re-pressing Aux/*** switch of a single amino acid residue in the TPL-binding motif between the bimodal form and the consistently repressing form switched their TPL-binding affinity and transcriptional and bio-logical roles in auxin *** on these data,we propose a model whereby competition between homologous repressors with different co-repressor-binding affinities could generate a bimodal output at thetranscriptional anddevelopmental levels.

Saline wastewater is regarded as a challenge for wastewater treatment plants because high-salinity conditions negatively affect on traditional biological *** granular sludge(AGS)has gained attention as a promising technology for saline wastewater treatment because of its compact structure and the ability to withstand toxic ***,this study investigated the saltresistance performance,sludge properties and microbial community of AGS under low-salinity and high-salinity conditions,with the saline concentrations ranging from 0 to 50 g/*** results showed that AGS could withstand long-term saline stresses,and the maximum salinity reached 50 g/L within 113 *** salinities of 10,30,and 50 g/L,the chemical oxygen demand(COD)removal efficiencies were 90.3%,88.0%and 78.0%,*** also its maintained strength and aggregation at salinities of 10 and 30 g/*** of extracellular polymeric substances(EPS)by non-halophilic bacteria that enhanced sludge *** compact structure that ensured the microorganisms bioactivity helped to remove organic matters under salinities of 10 and 30 g/*** a salinity of 50 g/L,moderately halophilic bacteria,including Salinicola,Thioclava,Idiomarina and Albirhodobacter,prevailed in the *** dominant microbial communities shifted to moderately halophilic bacteria,which could maintain aerobic granular stabilization and remove organic matters under 50 g/L *** results in this study provide a further explanation for the long-term operation of AGS for treating saline wastewater at different *** is hoped that this work could bring some clues for the mystery of salt-resistance mechanisms.
