Progress in hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure treatment in China:A large,multicenter,retrospective cohort study using a propensity score matching analysis

Background:Hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure(HBV-ACLF)has a high short-term ***,the treatment progression for HBV-ACLF in China in the past decade has not been well *** present study aimed to determine whether the HBV-ACLF treatment has significantly improved during the past ***:This study retrospectively compared short-term(28/56 days)survival rates of two different nationwide cohorts(cohort I:2008-2011 and cohort II:2012-2015).Eligible HBV-ACLF patients were enrolled *** in the cohorts I and II were assigned either to the standard medical therapy(SMT)group(cohort I-SMT,cohort II-SMT)or artificial liver support system(ALSS)group(cohort IALSS,cohort II-ALSS).Propensity score matching analysis was conducted to eliminate baseline differences,and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to explore the independent factors for 28-day ***:Short-term(28/56 days)survival rates were significantly higher in the ALSS group than those in the SMT group(P<0.05)and were higher in the cohort II than those in the cohort I(P<0.001).After propensity score matching,short-term(28/56 days)survival rates were higher in the cohort II than those in the cohort I for both SMT(60.7%vs.53.0%,50.0%vs.39.8%,P<0.05)and ALSS(66.1%vs.56.5%,53.0%vs.44.4%,P<0.05)*** 28-day survival rate was higher in patients treated with nucleos(t)ide analogs than in patients without such treatments(P=0.046).Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that ALSS(OR=0.962,95%CI:0.951-0.973,P=0.038),nucleos(t)ide analogs(OR=0.927,95%CI:0.871-0.983,P=0.046),old age(OR=1.028,95%CI:1.015-1.041,P<0.001),total bilirubin(OR=1.002,95%CI:1.001-1.003,P=0.004),INR(OR=1.569,95%CI:1.044-2.358,P<0.001),COSSH-ACLF grade(OR=2.683,95%CI:1.792-4.017,P<0.001),and albumin(OR=0.952,95%CI:0.924-0.982,P=0.002)were independent factors for 28-day ***:The treatment for patients with HBV-ACLF has improved

Rabies is an acute,progressive encephalitis caused by infection with rabies virus(RABV).It is one of the most important zoonotic infections and causes more than 70,000 human deaths annually(http://***).It has long been held that a rabies infection is lethal in humans once the causative RABV reaches the central nervous system(CNS);however,this concept was challenged by the recent recovery of a small number of rabies *** analysis of these patients revealed that the blood-brain barrier(BBB)played a major role in protection against the *** main reason for the survival of these patients was enhanced BBB permeability after infection with the causative agent(usually bat-originated RABV showing reduced pathogenicity),which allowed immune cells to enter the tissues of the CNS and clear the infection(Willoughby et al.,2005).These fi ndings have been confi rmed in animal infection experiments(Wang et al.,2005;Roy and Hooper,2007,2008;Faber et al.,2009).Thus,the BBB has attracted the attention of scientists interested in the pathogenesis of,and therapeutic approaches,for *** paper introduces the role of the BBB in rabies infections and protection of the CNS and provides insight into future treatments for patients with clinical rabies.

Manipulating the Interferon Signaling Pathway: Implications for HIV Infection

During human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) infection, type I interferon(IFN-I) signaling induces an antiviral state that includes the production of restriction factors that inhibit virus replication, thereby limiting the infection. As seen in other viral infections, type I IFN can also increase systemic immune activation which, in HIV disease, is one of the strongest predictors of disease progression to acquired immune deficiency syndrome(AIDS) and non-AIDS morbidity and ***, IFN-I is associated with CD4 T cell depletion and attenuation of antigen-specific T cell responses. Therefore,therapeutic manipulation of IFN-I signaling to improve HIV disease outcome is a source of much interest and debate in thefield. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of timing(acute vs. chronic infection) and have suggested that specific targeting of type I IFNs and their subtypes may help harness the beneficial roles of the IFN-I system while avoiding its deleterious activities.

Dear Editor,Although coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is no longer deemed a“Public Health Emergency of International Concern”,the global transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 have shifted due to vaccination,emergency of virus variants,and pre-existing coronavirus immunity.1–3 It remains unclear how cross-reactive and pre-existing humoral immunity might impact the effectiveness of vaccines and antibodies against new viral mutations.4,5 This study seeks to elucidate the cross-reactivity of coronavirus antibodies induced by previously unencountered Omicron BA.5/BF.7 variants in the breakthrough infection(BTI)population.

To understand the potential causes of laboratory-acquired infections and to provide possible solutions that would protect laboratory personnel, samples from a viral laboratory were screened to determine the main sources of contamination with six subtypes of Rhinovirus. Rhinovirus contamination was found in the gloves, cuffs of protective wear, inner surface of biological safety cabinet （BSC） windows, and trash handles. Remarkably, high contamination was found on the inner walls of the centrifuge and the inner surface of centrifuge tube casing in the rotor. Spilling infectious medium on the surface of centrifuge tubes was found to contribute to contamination of centrifuge surfaces. Exposure to sodium hypochlorite containing no less than 0.2 g/L available chlorine decontaminated the surface of the centrifuRe tubes from Rhinovirus after 2 min.

A Novel Reassortant H2N3 Influenza Virus Isolated from China

Objective To analyze the genetic composition of a novel H2N3 virus isolate identified from a duck cage swab in a live poultry market （LPM） in 2009 in Guangdong province of China. Methods PCR-positive specimens were inoculated into embryonated chicken eggs and subtyped by conventional RT-PCR. All segments of the virus A/environment/Guangdong/2/2009 were sequenced, and phylogenetic trees were constructed and analyzed. Results The genes of this virus belong to Eurasian-lineage avian viruses. The virus is a reassortant with the HA gene from an H2N2 virus and the NA gene from an H5N3 virus. The PB1, PB2, and NP genes were from an H4N6 virus, the PA was from an H3N8 virus, the M gene was from an H1N3 virus, and the NS gene was from an H10N6 virus. Conclusion market. Its A novel avian-origin reassortant H2N3 influenza virus was detected in a live poultry potential impacts and evolution should be closely monitored.
