High Mountain Asia(HMA),recognized as a third pole,needs regular and intense studies as it is susceptible to climate *** accurate and high-resolution Digital Elevation Model(DEM)for this region enables us to analyze it in a 3D environment and understand its intricate role as the Water Tower of *** science teams of NASA realized an 8-m DEM using satellite stereo imagery for HMA,termed HMA 8-m *** this research,we assessed the vertical accuracy of HMA 8-m DEM using reference elevations from ICESat-2 geolocated photons at three test sites of varied topography and land *** were made from statistical quantifiers and elevation *** the world’s highest mountain,Mount Everest,and its surroundings,Root Mean Squared Error(RMSE)and Mean Absolute Error(MAE)resulted in 1.94 m and 1.66 m,respectively;however,a uniform positive bias observed in the elevation profiles indicates the seasonal snow cover change will dent the accurate estimation of the elevation in this sort of test *** second test site containing gentle slopes with forest patches has exhibited the Digital Surface Model(DSM)features with RMSE and MAE of 0.58 m and 0.52 m,*** third test site,situated in the Zanda County of the Qinghai-Tibet,is a relatively flat terrain bed,mostly bare earth with sudden river cuts,and has minimal errors with RMSE and MAE of 0.32 m and 0.29 m,respectively,and with a negligible ***,in one more test site,the feasibility of detecting the glacial lakes was tested,which resulted in exhibiting a flat surface over the surface of the lakes,indicating the potential of HMA 8-m DEM for deriving the hydrological *** results accrued in this investigation confirm that the HMA 8-m DEM has the best vertical accuracy and should be of high use for analyzing natural hazards and monitoring glacier surfaces.

Assessment of spongy moth infestation impacts on forest productivity and carbon loss using the Sentinel-2 satellite remote sensing and eddy covariance flux data

Background Deciduous forests in eastern North America experienced a widespread and intense spongy moth（Lymantria dispar） infestation in 2021. This study quantified the impact of this spongy moth infestation on carbon（C） cycle in forests across the Great Lakes region in Canada, utilizing high-resolution（10 × 10 m2） Sentinel-2 satellite remote sensing images and eddy covariance（EC） flux data. Study results showed a significant reduction in leaf area index（LAI） and gross primary productivity（GPP） values in deciduous and mixed forests in the region in *** remote sensing derived, growing season mean LAI values of deciduous（mixed） forests were 3.66（3.18）, 2.74（2.64）, and 3.53（2.94） m2m-2in 2020, 2021 and 2022, respectively, indicating about 24（14）% reduction in LAI, as compared to pre-and post-infestation years. Similarly, growing season GPP values in deciduous（mixed） forests were 1338（1208）, 868（932）, and 1367（1175） g C m-2, respectively in 2020, 2021 and 2022, showing about 35（22）% reduction in GPP in 2021 as compared to pre-and post-infestation years. This infestation induced reduction in GPP of deciduous and mixed forests, when upscaled to whole study area（178,000 km2）, resulted in 21.1（21.4） Mt of C loss as compared to 2020（2022）, respectively. It shows the large scale of C losses caused by this infestation in Canadian Great Lakes *** The methods developed in this study offer valuable tools to assess and quantify natural disturbance impacts on the regional C balance of forest ecosystems by integrating field observations, high-resolution remote sensing data and models. Study results will also help in developing sustainable forest management practices to achieve net-zero C emission goals through nature-based climate change solutions.

Exploring diurnal and seasonal variabilities in surface urban heat island intensity in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area

The urban heat island(UHI) is an environmental problem of wide concern because it poses a threat to both the human living environment and the sustainable development of cities. Knowledge of the spatiotemporal characteristics and the driving factors of UHI is essential for mitigating their impact. However, current understanding of the UHI in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area(GBA) is inadequate. Combined with data(e.g., land surface temperature and land use.) acquired from the Google Earth Engine and other sources for the period 2001–2020, this study examined the diurnal and seasonal variabilities, spatial heterogeneities, temporal trends, and drivers of surface UHI intensity(SUHII) in the GBA. The SUHII was calculated based on the urban–rural dichotomy, which has been proven an effective method. The average SUHII was generally 0–2°C, and the SUHII in daytime was generally greater than that at night. The maximum(minimum) SUHII was found in summer(winter);similarly, the largest(smallest) diurnal difference in SUHII was during summer(winter). Generally, the Mann–Kendall trend test and the Sen's slope estimator revealed a statistically insignificant upward trend in SUHII on all time scales. The influence of driving factors on SUHII was examined using the Geo-Detector model. It was found that the number of continuous impervious pixels had the greatest impact, and that the urban–rural difference in the enhanced vegetation index had the smallest impact, suggesting that anthropogenic heat emissions and urban size are the main influencing factors. Thus, controlling urban expansion and reducing anthropogenic heat generation are effective approaches for alleviating surface UHI.

Integrating remote sensing and 3-PG model to simulate the biomass and carbon stock of Larix olgensis plantation

Accurate estimations of biomass and its temporal dynamics are crucial for monitoring the carbon cycle in forest ecosystems and assessing forest carbon sequestration *** studies have shown that integrating process-based models(PBMs)with remote sensing data can enhance simulations from stand to regional scales,significantly improving the ability to simulate forest growth and carbon stock ***,the utilization of PBMs for large-scale simulation of larch carbon storage distribution is still *** this study,we applied the parameterized 3-PG(Physiological Principles Predicting Growth)model across the Mengjiagang Forest Farm(MFF)to make broad-scale predictions of the biomass and carbon stocks of Larix olgensis *** model was used to simulate average diameter at breast height(DBH)and total biomass,which were later validated with a wide range of observation data including sample plot data,forest management inventory data,and airborne laser scanning *** results showed that the 3-PG model had relatively high accuracy for predicting both DBH and total biomass at stand and regional scale,with determination coefficients ranging from 0.78 to *** on the estimation of total biomass,we successfully produced a carbon stock map of the Larix olgensis plantation in MFF with a spatial resolution of 20 m,which helps with relevant management *** findings indicate that the integration of 3-PG model and remote sensing data can well predict the biomass and carbon stock at regional and even larger *** addition,this integration facilitates the evaluation of forest carbon sequestration capacity and the development of forest management plans.

Apatite Fission-Track Thermochronology in the Tamusu Area,Bayingobi Basin,NW China,and its Geological Significance

Orthogonal waveform design with fractional programming on the ambiguity suppression of SAR systems

Waveform diversity(WD) represents a dynamic and transformative technology widely used in radar systems to enhance sensitivity and discrimination capabilities. Recently, WD techniques have been extensively explored for their potential ambiguity suppression within synthetic aperture radar(SAR) *** these, the alternate transmitting mode combined with orthogonal waveforms emerges as a particularly promising solution. This study focuses on optimizing the power spectrum density(PSD) of signals to design and generate an orthogonal waveform pair that achieves both a low cross-correlation-to-autocorrelation ratio(CAR) and satisfactory imaging performance. Initially, we construct a fractional programming model with convex constraints to minimize the CAR. To address this challenge, we introduce an iterative optimization procedure for the PSD variable, which sequentially reduces the CAR. Each optimization step can be efficiently solved using a quadratically constrained quadratic program, ensuring that the resulting computational complexity remains low. Building on the optimized PSD, we established a parametric piecewise linear model to generate an orthogonal waveform pair. This model not only maintains a low CAR but achieves satisfactory imaging performance in real-time applications. Consequently, this orthogonal waveform pair effectively suppresses range ambiguity in SAR systems. Finally, we demonstrated the practicability and effectiveness of the proposed orthogonal waveforms through detailed simulation experiments, specifically targeting ambiguity suppression in conventional quad-polarization SAR systems.

Spatiotemporal changes in sunshine duration and its influential factors in Chongqing,China from 1961 to 2020

The surface solar radiation in most parts of the world has undergone a phenomenon known as global dimming and brightening,characterized by an initial decrease followed by an *** a result,the sunshine duration(SD)has decreased in the past 60 *** the backdrop of global dimming and brightening,SD has decreased to varying degrees in many regions of *** the observed data of SD,cloud amount(total cloud amount and low cloud amount,abbreviated as TCA and LCA),precipitation,and relative humidity(RH)from 34 meteorological stations in Chongqing during the period of 1961-2020,along with a digital elevation model(DEM)with a resolution of 90 m,this study analyzed the spatiotemporal variations and influencing factors of *** analysis employed methods such as linear regression,Mann-Kendall test,wavelet transformation,and DEM-based possible SD distributed *** results showed that the annual SD in Chongqing has significantly decreased over the last 60 years,with a decreasing interannual trend rate(ITR)of 40.4 h/*** for no obvious trend in spring,SD decreased significantly in summer,autumn and winter at the ITR of 21.1 h/10a,8.5 h/10a and 7.5 h/10a,*** abrupt decrease in the annual SD was found in *** difference before and after the abrupt decrease was 177.7 *** difference before and after the abrupt decrease was 177.7 *** annual SD possessed the oscillation period of *** spatial heterogeneity of the mean annual SD during the last 60 years was *** distribution of SD in Chongqing is high in the northeast and low in the *** addition,about 73%of the total area in Chongqing showed a significant and very significant decreasing *** regions with significant changes are mainly concentrated in the regions with altitudes of 200~1000 *** increasing LCA was the main cause of the decrease of the annual SD in the regions with 200-400 m altitude decreased the most and changed the *** LCA is the prim

Spatial Analysis of the Aging Population and Socio-economic Factors of China:Global and Local Perspectives

Population aging has become an inevitable trend and exerted profound influences on socio-economic development in *** this study,we utilized data from national population census and statistical yearbooks in 2010 and 2020 to explore spatio-temporal patterns of aging population and its coupling correlations with socio-economic factors from both global and local *** results from Local Indicators of Spatial Association(LISA)uncover notable spatial disparities in aging population rates,with higher rates concentrated in the eastern regions and lower rates in the western areas of the Chinese *** results from the global correlation analysis with the changes in aging population rates show significant positive correlations with government interventions and industrial structures,but negatively correlated with economic development,social consumption,and medical *** a local perspective,a Geographically Weighted(GW)correlation analysis is employed to uncover local correlations between aging trends and socio-economic *** insights gained from this technique not only underscore the complexity and diversity of economic implications stemming from population aging,but also provide invaluable guidance for crafting region-specific economic policies tailored to various stages of population aging.
