Based on waveform data, several methods to determine focal mechanisms of small earthquakes were developed since 1980. Kisslinger (1980) and Julian, Foulger (1996) proposed an approach to determine solution by using amplitude ratio of P and S wave. Schwartz (1995) devised a method to determine solutions by the use of polarity data and amplitudes of seismogram envelopes. Amplitudes of short period seismic waves propagating in an inhomogene-ous medium are sensitive to the variation in velocity and Q structure. Nakamura, et al (1999) took medium inhomo-geneity into account in determining focal mechanisms of small earthquakes using waveform data. If the locations of small earthquakes are concentrated in a small region, we can assume that the raypaths from the events to a given station are almost the same. So P and S wave attenuations are independent of event locations. In this case it is con-venient to determine focal mechanisms of these events by using short period P and S wave dataj. Focal mechanism solutions of small earthquakes in 5 regions, i.e., Rongchang, Mabian-Muchuan, Ya￠an, Baoxing and Mianzhu, which are covered by the Chengdu Telemetered Network, are obtained by analyzing the P polarity and short body wave amplitude data recorded in the network since 1992. According to the method proposed by Gephart and Forsyth (1984), based on well determined focal mechanism solutions in 15 sub-zones of Sichuan and Yunnan area, three principal stress tensors s1, s2, and s3, instead of averages of P, B, and T axis of the solutions, are determined to represent the regional stress field distribution.

Two key research projects in geoscience field in China since the IUGG meeting in Birmingham in 1999, the project of East Asian Continental Geodynamics and the project of Mechanism and prediction of Strong Continental earthquakes are introduced in this paper. Some details of two projects, such as their sub-projects, some initial research results published are also given here. Because of the large magnitude of the November 14, 2001 Kunlun Mountain Pass MS=8.1 earthquake, in the third part of this paper, some initial research results are reviewed for the after-shock monitoring and the multi-discipline field survey, the impact and disaster of this earthquake on the construction site of Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) railway and some other infrastructure.

Considering the fact that there is only one pair of fixed potential poles in one direction used to monitor the resistiv-ity changes under the observatory station which may indicate process of earthquake preparation, based on the pre-condition that the resistivity structure is 1-dimensional under the observatory station, and by way of equivalent model put forward by the authors, this paper suggests a kind of method trying to separate the resistivity changes in deep layers from that of the shallow layer. Analysis shows that, to obtain the same measured data with the same array, any a multi-layered geo-electrical structure can be equivalently taken as a two-layered one, we call it equiva-lent model. In this paper, the resistivity and thickness of the upper layer of the equivalent model are equal to that of the first layer of the original one, the resistivity of the lower layer of the equivalent model is obtained with calcula-tion according to the requirement of equivalence, its value is relevant with the resistivities and thicknesses of all layer of the original model except for the first one, so the resistivity change of the equivalent layer can indicate the synthetic effect of variation of all layers of the original model except for the first one. The primary research results show that this method can work well.

TSCND:Temporal Subsequence-Based Convolutional Network with Difference for Time Series Forecasting

Time series forecasting plays an important role in various fields, such as energy, finance, transport, and weather. Temporal convolutional networks (TCNs) based on dilated causal convolution have been widely used in time series forecasting. However, two problems weaken the performance of TCNs. One is that in dilated casual convolution, causal convolution leads to the receptive fields of outputs being concentrated in the earlier part of the input sequence, whereas the recent input information will be severely lost. The other is that the distribution shift problem in time series has not been adequately solved. To address the first problem, we propose a subsequence-based dilated convolution method (SDC). By using multiple convolutional filters to convolve elements of neighboring subsequences, the method extracts temporal features from a growing receptive field via a growing subsequence rather than a single element. Ultimately, the receptive field of each output element can cover the whole input sequence. To address the second problem, we propose a difference and compensation method (DCM). The method reduces the discrepancies between and within the input sequences by difference operations and then compensates the outputs for the information lost due to difference operations. Based on SDC and DCM, we further construct a temporal subsequence-based convolutional network with difference (TSCND) for time series forecasting. The experimental results show that TSCND can reduce prediction mean squared error by 7.3% and save runtime, compared with state-of-the-art models and vanilla TCN.

Purpose:To evaluate the influence of corneal ablation patterns on the prediction error after cataract surgery in postmyopic-LASIK ***:Eighty-three post-myopic-LASIK eyes of 83 patients that underwent uneventful cataract surgery were retrospectively *** postoperative spherical equivalence(SE)was calculated for the implanted lens using the Haigis-L and Barrett True-K *** error at one month postsurgery was calculated as actual SE minus predicted *** each eye,area and decentration of the ablation zone was measured using the tangential curvature *** associations between prediction errors and corneal ablation patterns were ***:The mean prediction error was-0.83±1.00 D with the Haigis-L formula and-1.00±0.99 D with the Barrett True-K *** error was positively correlated with keratometry(K)value and negatively correlated with ablation zone area using either formula,and negatively correlated with decentration of the ablation zone using the Barrett True-K formula(all Pprediction error was negatively correlated with decentration of the ablation zone with both formulas(all Pprediction error was associated with axial length(AL),K value and decentration,and with the Barrett True-K formula,prediction error was associated with AL and decentration(all Pprediction error after cataract surgery in post-myopic-LASIK eyes.
