It has been found that the sea-surface temperature and the characteristics of atmospheric circulation in the preceding months are closely related to the temperature and ice regime in winter months. This relationship is strikingly reflected over the strong ocean current regions and over the regions with quasi-permanent atmospheric center actions. It has also been shown that the influence of the ocean on the atmosphere is more pronounced over these regions. This relationship may offer a key for long-term forecasting of the sea-ice regime in winter. In addition, because there is an obvious instability, the stabilities of the correlation coefficients are analysed. In consideration of the fact that the formation of weather process changes with the variations of time scale, predictions for longer and shorter time scale processes are discussed *** conclusion, some forecasting results obtained and tests made in recent years are given.

An empirical orthogonal function analysis has been applied to solving the forecast problem of the monthly mean sea surface temperature for the East China Sea and the adjacent waters. The data matrix of the original sea surface temperature fields can be separated into two components, /’. e. the spatial and the temporal components. According to the properties of its spatial component that almost does not change with time and through the extrapolation of its temporal component, the prediction for large area sea surface temperature will be achieved. The time coefficients for temporal component are predicted by means of traverse and vertical time series *** the basis of forecasting for these two years, it has been proved that the method objectively reflected the internal relations and interactions of sea surface temperature among the stations of water area. Two new species (Nitzschia sinensis Liu, sp. nov. and Podosira granulata Liu, sp. nov.) and one new variety (Xanthiopyxis microspinosa var. ellipticus Liu, var. nov.) collected from the urface sediments off the southern Huanghai Sea and the East China Sea are described and a list of diatoms from the surface sediments in the survey area and some new records in China are attached.

From the continental shelf of the East China Sea, we have collected and recorded 157 taxa of planktonic diatoms, of which 57 are tropical species, 20 temperate species, 73 widely distributed species and 7 remain to be further investigated for their habitats. Chaetoceros peruvianus f. robusta, Chaet. setoenis, Rhizosolenia alata f. curvirostris and Triceratium campeachlanum are four species recorded for the first time in *** diatoms flora in the present region is mainly warm-water in nature and is very much similar to that in the South China Sea but differs greatly from that in the Huanghai Sea. Gossle-riella tropica (30°00′ - 32°00′ N, 127°20′ - 128°30′E) and other warm-water floras are present in the waters due to the effect of the Tsushima Warm Current.

O-phthaldialdehyde is used for the determination of free amino acid in seawater by measuring the fluorescence produced by its reaction with the a-amino group of amino acids. This method is so sensitive that as little as 1-10 nM of amino acids and less than 1 ml of seawater may be sufficient for one *** method is simple, rapid and accurate and a-amino acids contained in seawater can directly be determined without concentration and extraction. It is free from the interference of large content of inorganic salts and other nitrogenous compounds in seawater.A hundred and fifty-two samples collected at 24 stations in offshore of Zhejiang have been analyzed. The results obtained show that the range of concentration of the total free amino acid is 0.37-4.70 μM. The values are high near shore and low offshore.

Based on daily precipitation data from 109 stations in the Yangtze River Basin(YRB)over the past 36 years(1980-2015),the Empirical Orthogonal Function(EOF)is employed to analyze changes in autumn *** used the monthly mean re-analysis datasets of atmospheric circulation and sea surface temperature(SST)to investigate the possible causes of the two leading modes,based on which the predictive equations were constructed and *** results of the EOF analysis show that the variance contribution of the first mode is 31.07%,and the spatial distribution shows a uniform variation over the whole *** variance contribution of the second mode is 15.02%,and the spatial distribution displays a north-south dipole pattern in the *** leading mode shows a dominant interannual variation,which is mainly due to the West Pacific subtropical high and anticyclones over the Philippine *** SST field corresponds to the positive phase of the eastern Pacific El Niño and the tropical Indian Ocean *** second mode may be related to the Indian Ocean-East Asian teleconnection and early withdrawal of the summer *** SST field corresponds to a weaker central Pacific El Niñ*** a stepwise regression analysis,SST anomalies in some areas during summer show a good predictive effect on the autumn precipitation mode in the YRB region.

Analysis of the climatic characteristics of the tropical cyclones that affect China yields several interesting features. The frequency of these tropical cyclones tended to decrease from 1951 to 2005, with the lowest frequency in the past ten years. The decrease in the frequency of super typhoons is particularly significant. The main season of tropical cyclone activities is from May to November, with an active period from July to September. There are three obvious sources of these tropical cyclones and they vary with seasons and decades. Their movement has also changed with seasons. On average, these tropical cyclones affect China for 5.6 months annually and the period of influence decreases in the past decades. An analysis of daily data indicates that the days of typhoon influence are shorter in winter and spring and longer in summer. The frequency of tropical cyclones is the largest over southeastern China, decreasing northwestward. Taiwan is the region that is affected by tropical cyclones most frequently. The average annual precipitation associated with tropical cyclones has also decreased gradually northwestward from southeastern China.
