Lignite-Derived Humic Acid Effect on Growth of Wheat Plants in Different Soils

Humic acid （HA）, a fairly stable product of decomposed organic matter that consequently accumulates in ecological systems, enhances plant growth by chelating unavailable nutrients and buffering pH. We examined the effect of HA derived from lignite on growth and macronutrient uptake of wheat （Triticum acstivum L.） grown in earthen pots under greenhouse conditions. The soils used in the pot experiment were a calcareous Haplustalf and a non-calcareous Haplustalf collected from Raisalpur and Guliana, respectively, in Punjab Province, Pakistan. The experiment consisted of four treatments with HA levels of 0 （control without HA）, 30, 60, and 90 mg kg^-1 soil designated as HA0, HA1, HA2, and HA3, respectively. In the treatment without HA （HA0）, nitrogen （N）, phosphorus （P）, and potassium （K） were applied at 200, 100, and 125 mg kg^-1 soil, respectively. Significant differences among HA levels were recorded for wheat growth （plant height and shoot weight） and N uptake. On an average of both soils, the largest increases in plant height and shoot fresh and dry weights were found with HA2 （60 mg kg^-1 soil）, being 10%, 25%, and 18%, respectively, as compared to the control without HA （HA0）. Both soils responded positively towards HA application. The wheat growth and N uptake in the non-calcareous soil were higher than those of the calcareous soil. The HA application significantly improved K concentration of the non-calcareous soil and P and NO3-N of the calcareous soil. The highest rate of HA （90 mg kg^-1 soil） had a negative effect on growth and nutrient uptake of wheat as well as nutrient accumulation in soil, whereas the medium dose of HA （60 mg kg^-1 soil） was more efficient in promoting wheat growth.

Root and shoot growth of Brassica campestris L. and B. juncea increased significantly （P 〈 0.01） with enhanced Ca2＋ treatment along with 60 mM NaCl in the root medium. The maximum fresh mass of shoot and root in *** was recorded at 10 mM Ca2＋ concentration. The relative growth rate of shoot of both species reached its maximum at 8 mM of Ca2＋ concentration. Average rate of Ca2＋ intake （lCa） was higher in B. juncea than 6. campestris. In B. juncea, the average transport of Ca2＋ to shoot increased by 19%, 38%, 119%, 125% and 169% compared with the control. Furthermore specific utilization rate of Ca2＋ was higher in B. juncea than B. campestris. In B. campestris it increased by 9%, 32%, 41% and 59% at 4, 6, 8, and 10 mM of calcium in comparison to 2 mM Ca2＋ treatment. At 4, 6, 8 and 10 mM of Ca2＋ application, the increase in the leaf area ratio was 10,17, 23 and 30%, respectively. In the shoot and root portions of B. campestris and ***, Ca2＋ had a linear relationship with potassium and sulfur, whereas it was in antagonism with sodium ion.

Photoperiod-sensitive male sterility （PSMS） is a valuable germplasm for hybrid rice breeding. Recently, we cloned pros3, a locus controlling PSMS, which encodes a long non-coding RNA called LDMAR required for normal male fertility of the rice plant under long-day conditions. Increased methylation in the promoter of LDMAR in the PSMS rice （Nongken 58S） relative to the wild-type （Nongken 58） reduced expression of LDMAR leading to male sterility under long-day conditions. In this study, we identified a siRNA named Psi-LDMAR in the LDMAR promoter region that was more abundant in Nongken 58S than in Nongken 58. We showed that Psi-LDMAR was likely derived from AKl11270, a transcript obtained from the sense strand of the LDMAR promoter with its 3＇-end having a 110-base overlap with the 5＇-end of LDMAR. Overexpressing AKl11270 in Nongken 58S greatly enriched Psi-LDMAR, which induced RNA-directed DNA methylation in the LDMAR promoter and repressed the expression of LDMAR. Reduction of LDMAR in Nongken 58S changed the critical day length for fertility recovery and delayed the fertility recovery under short-day conditions. This result added to our understanding of the molecular mechanism for PSMS.

The development and prospect of rare earth functional biomaterials (REFB) was discussed. From 1979 to 1985, the simple REFB (salts) has been developed, and the fundamental research including forms, effects, toxicity, conversion in soil, and analysis methods had been finished. Then, the RE feed additive materials had been developed, and the fundamental research had also been finished. In 1990s, new REFB including RE phosphate fertilizer additive, RE conversional agricultural film additive, RE water-retraining reagent and RE seed coating reagent had been developed out rapidly. They were extended to 1.36 million hectares and big benefit had been got during the last three years. Recently, it was found that RE has some function of antagonizing heavy metals and degradating organophosphors pesticide, so the REFB will be studied as a focus once more, and will become one of the important methods of guaranteeing food security in the future.

Field experiments were conducted to study the inheritance of boron efficiency in oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) by evaluating the boron (B) efficiency coefficient (BEC, the ratio of the seed yield at below the critical boron level to that at the boron-sufficient level) with 657 F2:3 lines of a population derived from a cross between a B-efficient cultivar, Qingyou 10, and a B-inefficient cultivar, Bakow. Qingyou 10 had high BEC as well as high seed yield at low available soil B. On the contrary, Bakow produced low seed yield at low B status. Boron deficiency decreased the seed yield of the F2:3 lines to different extents and the distribution of BEC of the population showed a bimodal pattern. When the 657 F2:3 lines were grouped into B-efficient lines and B-inefficient lines according to their BEC, the ratio of B-efficient lines to B-inefficient lines fitted the expected ratio (3:1), indicating that one major gene controlled the B-efficiency trait. 127 F2:3 lines selected from the population at random, with distribution of BEC similar to that of the overall population, were used to identify the target region for fine mapping of the boron efficiency gene.

This research study evaluated the effect of different additives on the bait consumption by Indian crested porcupine,a serious forest and agricultural pest,under field *** additives(saccharin,common salt,bone meal,fish meal,peanut butter,egg yolk,egg shell powder,yeast powder,mineral oil and coconut oil)at 2 and 5%each were tested for their relative preference,using groundnut-maize(1:1)as basic *** the additives were tested under a no-choice test *** control tests,no additive was mixed with the basic *** at 5%concentration significantly enhanced the consumption of bait over the basic bait,while 2%saccharin supplemented bait resulted in a non-significant bait *** other additives did not enhance the consumption of the bait material;rather,these worked as ***,the repellency was lowest with the common salt,followed by egg yolk,egg shell powder,bone meal,peanut butter,mineral oil,fish meal and yeast powder,while coconut remained the most repellent *** present study suggested that groundnut-maize(1:1)supplemented with 5%saccharin was the preferred bait combination,and can be used with different rodenticides for the management of Indian crested porcupine.

Starch is the major carbohydrate in oat （Avena sativa L.） and starch formation requires the coordinated actions of several synthesis enzymes. In this study, the granule morphology, composition and physicochemical properties of oat starch, as well as the expressions of starch synthesis genes were investigated during oat endosperm development. Under the scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, we observed that the unique compound granules were developed in oat endosperms at 10 days post anthesis （DPA） and then fragmented into irregular or polygonal simple granules from 12 DPA until seed maturity. The amylose content, branch chain length of degree of polymerization （DP=13-24）, gelatinization temperature and percentage of retrogradation were gradually increased during the endosperm development; whereas the distribution of short chains （DP=6-12） were gradually decreased. The relative expressions of 4 classes of 13 starch synthesis genes characterized in this study indicated that three expression pattern groups were significantly different among gene classes as well as among varied isoforms, in which the first group of starch synthesis genes may play a key role on the initiation of starch synthesis in oat endosperms.
