A functional tacrolimus-releasing nerve wrap for enhancing nerve regeneration following surgical nerve repair

Axonal regeneration following surgical nerve repair is slow and often incomplete,resulting in poor functional recovery which sometimes contributes to lifelong ***,there are no FDA-approved therapies available to promote nerve *** accelerates axonal regeneration,but systemic side effects presently outweigh its potential benefits for peripheral nerve *** authors describe herein a biodegradable polyurethane-based drug delivery system for the sustained local release of tacrolimus at the nerve repair site,with suitable properties for scalable production and clinical application,aiming to promote nerve regeneration and functional recovery with minimal systemic drug *** is encapsulated into co-axially electrospun polycarbonate-urethane nanofibers to generate an implantable nerve wrap that releases therapeutic doses of bioactive tacrolimus over 31 *** and drug loading are adjustable for applications in small and large caliber nerves,and the wrap degrades within 120 days into biocompatible *** released from the nerve wrap promotes axon elongation in vitro and accelerates nerve regeneration and functional recovery in preclinical nerve repair models while off-target systemic drug exposure is reduced by 80%compared with systemic *** its surgical suitability and preclinical efficacy and safety,this system may provide a readily translatable approach to support axonal regeneration and recovery in patients undergoing nerve surgery.

Sorption of 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN) on lignin

The present study describes the use of two commercially available lignins,namely,alkali and organosolv lignin,for the removal of2,4-dinitroanisole（DNAN）,a chemical widely used by the military and the dye industry,from *** of DNAN on bothlignins reached equilibrium within 10 hr and followed pseudo second-order kinetics with sorption being faster with alkali than withorganosolv lignin,i.e.k2 10.3 and 0.3 g/（mg·hr）,*** a separate study we investigated sorption of DNAN between 10 and40 C and found that the removal of DNAN by organosolv lignin increased from 0.8 to 7.5 mg/g but reduced slightly from 8.5 to 7.6mg/g in the case of alkali *** isotherms for either alkali or organosolv lignin best fitted Freundlich equation with enthalpyof formation,H0 equaled to 14 or 80 kJ/*** help understand DNAN sorption mechanisms we characterized the two lignins byelemental analysis,BET nitrogen adsorption-desorption and 31P *** in elemental compositions between the two ligninsindicated that alkali lignin should have more sites（O-and S-containing functionalities） for *** BET surface area andcalculated total pore volume of alkali lignin were almost 10 times greater than that of organosolv lignin suggesting that alkali ligninshould provide more sites for sorption.31P NMR showed that organosolv lignin contains more phenolic-OH groups than alkali lignin,i.e.,70% and 45%,*** variations in the type of OH groups between the two lignins might have affected the strength ofH-bonding between DNAN and the type of lignin used.

Approximating Geographical Queries

This article proposes a graph-theoretic methodology for query approximation in Geographic Information Systems, enabling the relaxation of three kinds of query constraints： topological, semantic and structural. An approximate query is associated with a value corresponding to the degree of similarity with the original query. Such a value is computed for topological constraints on the basis of the topological distance between configurations, for semantic constraints using the information content approach, and for structural constraints revisiting the maximum weighted matching problem in bipartite graphs. Finally, the high correlation of our proposal with human judgment is demonstrated by an experiment.

High-quality reference genes for quantifying the transcriptional responses of Oryza sativa L. (ssp. indica and japonica) to abiotic stress conditions

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is important to food security and is also an excellent model plant for numerous cereal crops. A functional genomics study in rice includes characterization of the expression dynamics of genes by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) analysis; this is a significant key for developing rice varieties that perform well in the face of adverse climate change. The qPCR analysis requires the use of appropriate reference genes in order to make any quantitative interpretations meaningful. Here, the new potential reference genes were selected from a huge public database of rice microarray experiments. The expression stability of 14 candidates and 4 conventional reference genes was validated by geNorm PLUS and NormFinder software. Seven candidates are superior to the conventionally used reference genes in qPCR and three genes can be used reliably for quantitating the expression of genes involved in abiotic stress responses. These high-quality references EP (LOC_Os05g08980), HNR (LOC_Os01g71770), and TBC (LOC_Os09g34040) worked very well in three indica genotypes and one japonica genotype. One of indica genotypes including the Jasmine rice, KDML105 developed in Thailand for which no reference genes have been reported until now.

Instrumented and Vickers Indentation for the Characterization of Stiffness,Hardness and Toughness of Zirconia Toughened Al_2O_3 and SiC Armor

Instrumented and Vickers indentation testing and microstructure analysis were used to investigate zirconia toughened alumina （ZTA） and silicon carbide （SIC）. Several equations were studied to relate the Vickers indentation hardness, Young＇s modulus and crack behavior to the fracture toughness. The frac- ture in SiC is unstable and occurs primarily by cleavage leading to a relatively low toughness of 3 MPa m1/2, which may be inappropriate for multi-hit capability. ZTA absorbs energy by plastic deformation, pore collapse, crack deviation and crack bridging and exhibits time dependent creep. With a relatively high toughness around 6.6 MPa m1/2, ZTA is promising for multi-hit capability. The higher accuracy of median equations in calculating the indentation fracture toughness and the relatively high c/a ratios above 2.5 suggest median type cracking for both SiC and ZTA. The Young＇s modulus of both ceramics was most accurately measured at lower indentation loads of about 0.5 kgf, while more accurate hardness and fracture toughness values were obtained at intermediate and at higher indentation loads beyond 5 kgf, respectively. A strong indentation size effect （ISE） was observed in both materials. The load independent hardness of SiC is 2563 HV, putting it far above the standard armor hardness requirement of 1500 HV that is barely met by ZTA.

Application of chemical vapor generation in ICP-MS:A review

Chemical vapor generation(CVG) is an important sample introduction technique,and is widely used for atomic spectrometry for its enhanced sensitivity and *** the past 30 years,inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS) has become a widely used and the most sensitive instrument for(ultra-)trace element determination and elemental speciation.A review of applications of this state-of-the-art coupling of CVG and ICP-MS is *** is focused on its applications for both element determination and speciation,including hydride generation,cold vapor generation,photochemical vapor generation,alkylation,and electrochemical vapor *** addition,recent studies undertaken isotope dilution calibration in CVG-ICPMS for achieving improved accuracy and precision are summarized,and the future perspectives are discussed.

Electrochemical performance of NaCo_2O_4 as electrode for supercapacitors

Sub-micron-scaled sodium cobalt oxide （NaCo2O4） powders are prepared by a solid-state reaction method. Characterization using X-ray diffraction indicates that the synthesized NaCo2O4 has a hexagonal layered structure. The electrochemical performance of the NaCo2O4 electrodes is investigated using cyclic voltarnmetry and galvanostatic charge/discharge in NaOH solution. The results show that the specific capacitance of the NaCo2O4 electrode reaches 337 F/g over the potential range of 0.15-0.65 V at a mass normalized current of 50 mA/g. Moreover, NaCo2O4 exhibits very good stability and cycling performance as a supercapacitor material.

Development of carbon composite iron ore micropellets by using the microfines of iron ore and carbon-bearing materials in iron making

Iron ore microfines and concentrate have very limited uses in sintering processes. They are used in pelletization; however, this process is cost intensive. Furthermore, the microfines of non-coking coal and other carbon-bearing materials, e.g., blast-furnace flue dust （BFD） and coke frees, are not used extensively in the metallurgical industry because of operational difficu]ties and handling problems. In the present work, to utilize these microfines, coal composite iron oxide micropellets （2-6 mm in size） were produced through an innovative technique in which lime and molasses were used as binding materials in the micropellets. The micropellets were subsequently treated with CO2 or the industrial waste gas to induce the chemical bond formation. The results show that, at a very high carbon level of 22wt% （38wt% coal）, the cold crushing strength and abrasion index of the micropellets are 2.5-3 kg/cm2 and 5wt%-9wt%, respectively; these values indicate that the pellets are suitable for cold handling. The developed micropellets have strong potential as a heat source in smelting reduction in iron making and sintering to reduce coke breeze. The micropellets produced with BFD and coke fines （8wt%-12wt%） were used in iron ore sin- tering and were observed to reduce the coke breeze consumption by 3%-4%. The quality of the produced sinter was at par with that of the conventional blast-furnace sinter.
