Physiological and biochemical responses of Microcystis aeruginosa to phosphine(PH 3)under elevated CO2

Phosphine(PH3)is an important factor driving the outbreak of cyanobacterial blooms that produce toxic microcystin threating human *** clarify the physiological and biochemical responses of cyanobacteria to PH3 under elevated CO2 concentration,Microcystis aeruginosa was used in the coupling treatment of 1000 ppmv CO2 and PH3 at different concentrations *** chlorophyll a(Chl-a),carotenoid,net photosynthetic rate and total protein of *** exhibited evidently increasing tendency under the coupling treatment of 1000 ppmv CO2 and PH 3 at different concentrations(7.51×10^−3,2.48×10^−2,7.51×10^−2 mg/L).The coupling treatments resulted in the higher concentrations of Chl-a and carotenoid of ***,compared to those in the control and the treatment with CO2 alone,and their enhancement increased with the increase in PH 3 *** total antioxidant capacity(T-AOC)in the coupling treatment with CO2 and PH3 of 2.48×10^−2 mg/L and 7.51×10^−3 mg/L showed increasing tendency,compared to the treatment with PH 3 ***,the coupling treatment with 1000 ppmv CO2 and PH3 also altered the pH and DO level in the culture *** this regard,the coupling treatment with CO2 and PH3 at an appropriate concentration can enhance the resistance of *** to PH3 toxicity and is beneficial to the reproduction of ***,presumably resulting in potential for the outbreak of cyanobacteria *** the concern about global warming and the increase in atmospheric CO2 level,our research laid a foundation for the scientific understanding of the correlation between PH3 and cyanobacteria blooms.

Detrital sediments derived from the Philippine Islands are one of the main sources of deep-sea sediments in the western Philippine ***,systematic research on their characteristics and transport mechanisms are *** used parametric end-member analysis to quantitatively partition the grain size of detrital sediments in core MD06-3052 from the Bicol Shelf in the western Philippine Sea;three endmembers EMI,EM2,and EM3,whose respective modes were at 2,10,and 45 μm,were *** also measured the Sr and Nd isotopic compositions of different size fractions(20 μm) of the detrital sediments and the results showed that the detrital sediments mainly originate from the Philippine *** EMI and EM2 are transported to the Bicol Shelf mainly by surface and bottom currents from the islands,and component EM3 is delivered by gravity flow from the exposed shelf during low sea-level *** content of the total detrital fraction and the three end-members,as well as the mass accumulation rates(MARs) of the coarse detritus(EM2 and EM3),were considerably higher during glacial periods(40-14 ka and 150-130 ka) than during other intervals;the glacials corresponded to a low sea level,while the MAR of the fine detritus(EMI) did not increase remarkably during 40-14 *** therefore concluded that the input of coarse detritus to the Bicol Shelf from the islands was mainly controlled by sea-level *** of the input of fine-grained detritus(EM1) was influenced not only by sea level but also by ocean currents and regional ***,our results help understand "source-to-sink" processes in the western Pacific marginal seas and their response to global change.

More than 904.2 km2 of the flats are above the theorotical datum level with progressive rate of 20-200 m/a to the sea in Shanghai. Since the reclaimed land is vital important to the city, multiple approaches to accelerating siltation are proposed in the paper according to detailed study of dynamics, sedimentary structure and landform evolution based on plentiful in situ data. It is of great significance to utilize tidal flats and reclamation of land in Shanghai.

ANNUAL CHANGES IN PLASMA LEVELS OF CORTISOL AND SEX STEROID HORMONES IN MALE RAINBOW TROUT, ONCORHYNCHUS MYKISS

The profiles of cortisol, testosterone, 11 ketotestosterone and 17α, 20β dihydroxy 4 pregnene 3 one in male rainbow trout reared under constant water temperature and natural photoperiod were determined by radioimmunoassay. Gonads of male rainbow trout reached maturity when the fish were two years old. Changes in the plasma levels of both sex steroid hormones and cortisol were closely related to the GSI. Plasma levels of testosterone, 11 ketotestosterone and 17α, 20β dihydroxy 4 pregnene 3 one showed a clear peak in the annual breeding season, when the GSI reached their maxima. Plasma cortisol levels also showed clearly seasonal changes in both two and three year old fish. The results suggest that the elevated plasma levels of cortisol may not just be due to stresses during the breeding season but have certain physiological functions in the reproduction of rainbow trout.

Object-based classification of cloudy coastal areas using medium-resolution optical and SAR images for vulnerability assessment of marine disaster

Efficient and accurate access to coastal land cover information is of great significance for marine disaster prevention and *** the popular and common sensors of land resource satellites provide free and valuable images to map the land cover,coastal areas often encounter significant cloud cover,especially in tropical areas,which makes the classification in those areas *** solve this problem,we proposed a framework of combining medium-resolution optical images and synthetic aperture radar(SAR)data with the recently popular object-based image analysis(OBIA)method and used the Landsat Operational Land Imager(OLI)and Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar(PALSAR)images acquired in Singapore in 2017 as a case *** designed experiments to confirm two critical factors of this framework:one is the segmentation scale that determines the average object size,and the other is the classification *** assessments of the land cover indicated that the optimal segmentation scale was between 40 and 80,and the features of the combination of OLI and SAR resulted in higher accuracy than any individual features,especially in areas with cloud *** on the land cover generated by this framework,we assessed the vulnerability of the marine disasters of Singapore in 2008 and 2017 and found that the high-vulnerability areas mainly located in the southeast and increased by 118.97 km2 over the past *** clarify the disaster response plan for different geographical environments,we classified risk based on altitude and distance from *** newly increased high-vulnerability regions within 4 km offshore and below 30 m above sea level are at high risk;these regions may need to focus on strengthening disaster prevention *** study serves as a typical example of using remote sensing techniques for the vulnerability assessment of marine disasters,especially those in cloudy coastal areas.

Sanduao is an important sea-breeding bay in Fujian,South China and holds a high economic status in *** and accurately obtaining information including the distribution area,quantity,and aquaculture area is important for breeding area planning,production value estimation,ecological survey,and storm surge ***,as the aquaculture area expands,the seawater background becomes increasingly complex and spectral characteristics differ dramatically,making it difficult to determine the aquaculture *** this study,we used a high-resolution remote-sensing satellite GF-2 image to introduce a deep-learning Richer Convolutional Features(RCF)network model to extract the aquaculture *** we used the density of aquaculture as an assessment index to assess the vulnerability of aquaculture areas in *** results demonstrate that this method does not require land and water separation of the area in advance,and good extraction can be achieved in the areas with more sediment and waves,with an extraction accuracy>93%,which is suitable for large-scale aquaculture area *** assessment results indicate that the density of aquaculture in the eastern part of Sanduao is considerably high,reaching a higher vulnerability level than other parts.

Regional hard coral distribution within geomorphic and reef flat ecological zones determined by satellite imagery of the Xisha Islands,South China Sea

Coral reefs in the Xisha Islands(also known as the Paracel Islands in English), South China Sea, have experienced dramatic declines in coral cover. However, the current regional scale hard coral distribution of geomorphic and ecological zones, essential for reefs management in the context of global warming and ocean acidification, is not well documented. We analyzed data from field surveys, Landsat-8 and GF-1 images to map the distribution of hard coral within geomorphic zones and reef flat ecological zones. In situ surveys conducted in June 2014 on nine reefs provided a complete picture of reef status with regard to live coral diversity, evenness of coral cover and reef health(live versus dead cover) for the Xisha Islands. Mean coral cover was 12.5% in 2014 and damaged reefs seemed to show signs of recovery. Coral cover in sheltered habitats such as lagoon patch reefs and biotic dense zones of reef flats was higher, but there were large regional differences and low diversity. In contrast, the more exposed reef slopes had high coral diversity, along with high and more equal distributions of coral cover. Mean hard coral cover of other zones was <10%. The total Xisha reef system was estimated to cover 1 060 km^2, and the emergent reefs covered ~787 km^2. Hard corals of emergent reefs were considered to cover 97 km^2. The biotic dense zone of the reef flat was a very common zone on all simple atolls, especially the broader northern reef flats. The total cover of live and dead coral can reach above 70% in this zone, showing an equilibrium between live and dead coral as opposed to coral and algae. This information regarding the spatial distribution of hard coral can support and inform the management of Xisha reef ecosystems.

Repair wind field in oil contaminated areas with SAR images

In this paper,we compared the normalized radar cross section in the cases of oil spill,biogenic slicks,and clean sea areas with image samples made from 11-pixel NRCS average,and determined their thresholds of the NRCS of the synthetic aperture radar. The results show that the thresholds of oil and biogenic slicks exhibit good consistency with the corresponding synthetic aperture radar images. In addition,we used the normalized radar cross section of clean water from adjacent patches of oil or biogenic slicks areas to replace that of oil or biogenic slicks areas,and retrieve wind field by CMOD5.n and compare wind velocity mending of oil and biogenic slicks areas with Weather Research and Forecasting modeled data,from which the root mean squares of wind speed(wind direction) inversion are 0.89 m/s(20.26°) and 0.88 m/s(7.07°),respectively. Therefore,after the occurrence of oil spill or biogenic slicks,the real wind field could be repaired using the method we introduced in this paper. We believe that this method could improve the accuracy in assessment of a real wind field on medium and small scales at sea,and enhance effectively the monitoring works on similar oil or biogenic slicks incidents at sea surface.

A relationship between wave steepness and wave age for wind waves in deep water

Studying the relationship between wave steepness and wave age is important for describing wind wave growth with energy balance equation of significant waves. After invoking the dispersion rela- tion of surface gravity wave in deep water, a new relationship between wave steepness and wave age is revealed based on the “3/2-power law” (Toba, 1972), in which wave steepness is a function of wave age with a drag coefficient as a parameter. With a given wave age, a larger drag coefficient would lead to larger wave steepness. This could be interpreted as the result of interaction between wind and waves. Comparing with previous relationships, the newly proposed one is more consistent with observational data in field and laboratory.
