Humans have relied on biomass for survival and development since the Stone Age. All aspects of human needs for materials are covered by tools, fuel, and buildings. Nowadays, metals and petroleum-based materials are widely used in highly developed industries. Unfortunately, environmental contamination and the loss of natural resources have led to the reemergence of biomass resources as efficient and sustainable energy sources. Notably, simple and direct applications can no longer meet the demand for functionalization, high performance of materials and construction materials. Therefore, it is imperative to modify biomass and combine its utilisation to produce functionalization and high performance materials. For example, construction materials with superior mechanical properties and water resistance can be produced by reinforcing fibres to facilitate crosslinking. Water-oil separation or adsorption effects of hydrogels and aerogels are determined by the porosity and lightness of biomass, biocomposite conductor is prepared by chimaeric conductive material. Here, we review the approaches that have been taken to devise an environmentally friendly yet fully recyclable and sustainable functionalised biocomposites from biomass and its potential directions for future research.

Fast radio bursts(FRBs)are short pulses observed in radio frequencies usually originating from cosmological distances.The discovery of FRB 200428 and its X-ray counterpart from the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154suggests that at least some FRBs can be generated by magnetars.However,the majority of X-ray bursts from magnetars are not associated with radio emission.The fact that only in rare cases can an FRB be generated raises the question regarding the special triggering mechanism of FRBs.Here we report long time spin evolution of SGR J1935+2154 until the end of 2022.According to v and v,the spin evolution of SGR J1935+2154 could be divided into two stages.The first stage evolves relatively steady evolution until 2020 April 27.After the burst activity in2020,the spin of SGR J1935+2154 shows strong variations,especially for v.After the burst activity in 2022October,a new spin-down glitch with△v/v=(-7.2±0.6)×10^(-6)is detected around MJD 59876,which is the second event in SGR J1935+2154.At the end,spin frequency and pulse profile do not show variations around the time of FRB 200428 and radio bursts 221014 and 221021,which supply strong clues to constrain the trigger mechanism of FRBs or radio bursts.

Empty fruit bunch(EFB)is an industrial waste that is abundantly available in Malaysia.Traditionally,EFBs were burned and dumped on the plantation site,resulting in global warming pollution from methane and carbon dioxide.In this study,the EFB was transformed into a high-surface area of activated biochar through a microwave physicochemical approach involving the combination of steam followed by a hydroxide mixture for palm oil mill effluent(POME)treatment.It was found that BET(Brunauer-Emmett-Teller)surface area and total pore volume of activated biochar were 365.60 m^(2)/g and 0.16 cm^(3)/g,respectively.The surface morphology of activated biochar revealed the formation of well-developed pores that can potentially be used as adsorbents to treat POME.The removal efficiency of biochemical oxygen demand(BOD)and chemical oxygen demand(COD)of POME achieved 75%-55%,respectively.This study offers insight into the transformation of industrial waste into value-added products for sustainable environmental remediation.

We present the interstellar scintillation analysis of fast radio burst(FRB)20220912A during its extremely active episode in 2022using data from the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope(FAST).We detect a scintillation arc in the FRB’s secondary spectrum,which describes the power in terms of the scattered FRB signals’time delay and Doppler shift.The arc indicates that the scintillation is caused by a highly localized region.Our analysis favors a Milky Way origin of the ionized interstellar medium(IISM)for the localized scattering medium but cannot rule out a host galaxy origin.We present our method for detecting the scintillation arc,which can be applied generally to sources with irregularly spaced bursts or pulses.These methods could help shed light on the complex interstellar environment surrounding the FRBs and in our Galaxy.

Microwave steam pyrolysis(MSP)is an innovative thermochemical approach to converting biomass into high-quality biochar using steam to improve the dielectric heating of microwave radiation.Biochar shows high fixed carbon and carbon contents at a maximum temperature of 550℃in 10 min.The MSP achieved a heating rate of 112℃/min from 200℃to 400℃to produce biochar effectively.Furthermore,the thermal properties of biochar in microwave heating were investigated in this study to explore its potential as a microwave heat-absorbent material.Microwave is able to perform volumetric and controllable heating to the biochar.Moreover,biochar shows good microwave heat absorbency,storing and transferring heat effectively.The temperature profile of three different sizes of biochar was investigated to examine the efficiency of biochar in heat absorption from microwave radiation.It was found that the powder form of biochar showed a higher heat transfer rate of 40℃/min and a low cooling rate of 7.5℃/min.The presented results are useful for evaluating the application of biochar as a promising medium for heat storage systems.

The combination of urbanization and global warming leads to urban overheating and compounds the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events due to climate change.Yet,the risk of urban overheating can be mitigated by urban green-blue-grey infrastructure(GBGI),such as parks,wetlands,and engineered greening,which have the potential to effectively reduce summer air temperatures.Despite many reviews,the evidence bases on quantified GBGI cooling benefits remains partial and the practical recommendations for implementation are unclear.This systematic literature review synthesizes the evidence base for heat mitigation and related co-benefits,identifies knowledge gaps,and proposes recommendations for their implementation to maximize their benefits.After screening 27,486 papers,202 were reviewed,based on 51 GBGI types categorized under 10 main divisions.Certain GBGI(green walls,parks,street trees)have been well researched for their urban cooling capabilities.However,several other GBGI have received negligible(zoological garden,golf course,estuary)or minimal(private garden,allotment)attention.The most efficient air cooling was observed in botanical gardens(5.0±3.5℃),wetlands(4.9±3.2℃),green walls(4.1±4.2℃),street trees(3.8±3.1℃),and vegetated balconies(3.8±2.7℃).Under changing climate conditions(2070–2100)with consideration of RCP8.5,there is a shift in climate subtypes,either within the same climate zone(e.g.,Dfa to Dfb and Cfb to Cfa)or across other climate zones(e.g.,Dfb[continental warm-summer humid]to BSk[dry,cold semi-arid]and Cwa[temperate]to Am[tropical]).These shifts may result in lower efficiency for the current GBGI in the future.Given the importance of multiple services,it is crucial to balance their functionality,cooling performance,and other related co-benefits when planning for the future GBGI.This global GBGI heat mitigation inventory can assist policymakers and urban planners in prioritizing effective interventions to reduce the risk of urban overheating,filling research gaps,and promoting community resi

Microwave simulation is significant in identifying a reactor design allowing the biomass to be heated and processed evenly.This study integrated the radio frequency and transient heat transfer modules to simulate the microwave distribution and investigated the performance of microwave heating in the cavity.The simulation results were compared with the experimental findings us-ing the finite element analysis software of COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS to predict the temperature profile and electric field of microwave in the biomass(empty fruit bunch pellets).The higher temperature distribution was observed at the bottom and centre section of the empty fruit bunch pellet bed in the reactor,showing the uniqueness of microwave heating.According to the simula-tion results,the temperature profile obtained through the specific cavity geometry and dielectric properties agreed with the experimental temperature profile.The simulated temperature profile demonstrated a logarithmic increase of 120°C/min at the first 50 s followed by 50°C/min until 350 s.The experimental temperature profile showed three different heating rates before reaching 300°C,including 78.3°C/min(50-120°C),30.6°C/min(121-250°C),and 105°C/min(250-300°C).The results of this study might contribute to the improvement of microwave heating in biomass torrefaction.

Geologic field evidence for non-lithostatic overpressure recorded in the North American Cordillera hinterland,northeast Nevada

There is a long-standing discrepancy for numerous North American Cordillera metamorphic core complexes between geobarometric pressures recorded in the exhumed rocks and their apparent burial depths based on palinspastic reconstructions from geologic field data.In particular,metamorphic core complexes in eastern Nevada are comprised of well-documented~12-15 km thick Neoproterozoic-Paleozoic stratigraphy of Laurentia’s western passive margin,which allows for critical characterization of field relationships.In this contribution we focus on the Ruby Mountain-East Humboldt Range-Wood Hills-Pequop Mountains(REWP)metamorphic core complex of northeast Nevada to explore reported peak pressure estimates versus geologic field relationships that appear to prohibit deep burial.Relatively high pressure estimates of 6-8 kbar(23-30 km depth,if lithostatic)from the lower section of the Neoproterozoic-Paleozoic passive margin sequence require burial and or repetition of the passive margin sequence by 2-3×stratigraphic depths.Our observations from the least migmatized and/or mylonitized parts of this complex,including field observations,a transect of peak-temperature(T_(p))estimates,and critical evaluation of proposed thickening/burial mechanisms cannot account for such deep burial.From Neoproterozoic-Cambrian(€)rocks part of a continuous stratigraphic section that transitions~8 km upsection to unmetamorphosed Permian strata that were not buried,we obtained new quartz-in-garnet barometry via Raman analysis that suggest pressures of~7 kbar(~26 km).A T_(p)traverse starting at the same basal€rocks reveals a smooth but hot geothermal gradient of≥40℃/km that is inconsistent with deep burial.This observation is clearly at odds with thermal gradients implied by high P-T estimates that are all≤25℃/km.Remarkably similar discrepancies between pressure estimates and field observations have been discussed for the northern Snake Range metamorphic core complex,~200 km to the southeast.We argue that a possible reconciliation of longestablished fi

Natural scientists have long recognized that regions with similar climate tend to have similar vegetation.Preliminary observations suggest that shrub steppe communities of the western US and western China may be two such regions with similar annual precipitation,temperature,land use,and vegetation.These cold dry shrub steppes have traditionally been grazed.Despite these similarities,patterns of species dominance are different.Annual species that are rare in China become dominant when introduced to the United States.The objective of this study was to investigate how climate,land use and community structure may explain these patterns of species dominance.Community structure and grazing intensity were measured at 5 sites in each region.This information was combined with a broader review of the literature describing the history of grazing in both basins.Climate was analyzed based on a spatially-gridded,interpolated weather time series （monthly records） and climatological summary （1961-1990 mean conditions） data set from the Climate Research Unit.We found that differences in summer precipitation and winter minimum temperature,land use intensity,and shrub size may all contribute to the dominance of annual species in the Great Basin,particularly Bromus tectorum.In particular,previous work indicates that summer precipitation and winter temperature drive the distribution of Bromus tectorum in the Great Basin.As a result,sites with wet summers and cold springs,similar to the Chinese sites,would not be expected to be dominated by Bromus tectorum.A history of more intense grazing of the Chinese sites,as described in the literature,also is likely to decrease fire frequency,and decreases litter and shrub dominance,all of which have been demonstrated to be important in Bromus tectorum establishment and ultimate dominance.Further research is necessary to determine if other annuals that follow the same pattern of scarcity in the Junggar Basin and dominance in the Great Basin are responding to the same influences.

Relationship Between Teacher Efficacy and Self-Reported Instructional Practices:An Examination of Five Asian Countries/Regions Using TIMSS 2011 Data

Teacher efficacy in a particular content area is seen as an important factor shaping teaching practice and student learning in the western literature.However,inadequate efforts have been made to examine this assumption empirically.Drawing on the Trends of International Mathematics and Science Study(TIMSS)2011 mathematics teachers’data at the eighth grade level,this study examines the relationship between teacher efficacy in teaching mathematics and teachers’mathematical instructional practices in five Asian countries/regions.Guided with Bandura’s social cognitive theory,this study finds that overall teachers in the five countries/regions reported much lower teacher efficacy in teaching mathematics and lower levels of instructional practices than the international norms.The relationship between teacher efficacy and instructional practices varied within these countries/regions.Teacher efficacies in teaching mathematics are not always statistically and positively related to their instructional practices in engaging students.Together,these findings challenge the theoretical assumption about the positive relationship between teacher efficacy and instructional practices.Possible reasons of these findings and future directions are discussed.
