Pollutants and fish predator/prey behavior： A review of laboratory and field approaches

Fish behavior can be altered by contaminants. There is an extensive literature on laboratory behavioral assays, with many chemicals impairing feeding or predator avoidance. However, there is not extensive work on fishes that live in contami- nated environments. Therefore, we then review our recent research on feeding and trophic relations of populations from contami- nated estuaries compared with relatively unpolluted sites. The mummichog Fundulus heteroclitus, is a non-migratory fish; those from more contaminated areas are poor predators and slower to capture active prey （grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio）. In the field, they consume much detritus and sediment, which is not nutritious. They are less active than fish from cleaner sites and more vulnerable to predation. They have altered thyroid glands and neurotransmitter levels, which may underlie altered behaviors Fish from the reference site kept in tanks with sediment and food from the polluted site showed bioaccumulation and reduced prey capture after two months, although fish from the polluted site did not show significant improvement when maintained in a clean environment. Poor nutrition and predator avoidance may be responsible for their being smaller and having a shorter life span than reference fish. Bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix, are a marine species in which the young-of-the-year spend their first summer in es- tuaries. We found bioaccumulation of contaminants and reduced activity, schooling, and feeding in young-of-the-year bluefish from a relatively unpolluted site that were fed prey fish from a contaminated site. They also had altered thyroid glands and neuro- transmitter levels. Many field-caught specimens had empty stomachs, which is rare in this species. In the fall, when they migrate back out to the ocean, they are smaller, slower, and more likely to starve or to be eaten than those that spent their summer in cleaner estuaries [Current Zoology 58 （1）： 9-20, 2012].

Risk assessments quantify the probability of undesirable events along with their *** are used to prioritize management interventions and assess tradeoffs,serving as an essential component of ecosystem-based management(EBM).A central objective of most risk assessments for conservation and management is to characterize uncertainty and impacts associated with one or more pressures of *** assessments have been used in marine resource management to help evaluate the risk of environmental,ecological,and anthropogenic pressures on species or habitats including for data-poor fisheries management(e.g.,toxicity,probability of extinction,habitat alteration impacts).Traditionally,marine risk assessments focused on singular pressure-response relationships,but recent advancements have included use of risk assessments in an EBM context,providing a method for evaluating the cumulative impacts of multiple pressures on multiple ecosystem ***,we describe a conceptual framework for ecosystem risk assessment(ERA),highlighting its role in operationalizing EBM,with specific attention to ocean management *** framework builds on the ecotoxicological and conservation literature on risk assessment and includes recent advances that focus on risks posed by fishing to marine *** review how examples of ERAs from the United States fit into this framework,explore the variety of analytical approaches that have been used to conduct ERAs,and assess the challenges and data gaps that *** review discusses future prospects for ERAs as EBM decision-support tools,their expanded role in integrated ecosystem assessments,and the development of next-generation risk assessments for coupled natural-human systems.

Internal solitary waves in the East China Sea

A European Space Agency＇ s ENVISAT advanced synthetic aperture radar （ASAR） image covering Zhejiang coastal water in the East China Sea （ECS） was acquired on 1 August 2007. This image shows that there are about 20 coherent internal solitary wave （ISW） packets propagating southwestward toward Zhejiang coast. These ISW packets are separated by about 10 kin, suggesting that these ISWs are tide-generated waves. Each ISW packet contains 5-15 wave crests. The wavelengths of the wave crests within the ISW packets are about 300 m. The lengths of the leading wave crests are about 50 km. The ISW amplitude is estimated from solving KdV equation in an ideal two-layer ocean model. It is found that the ISW amplitudes is about 8 m. Further analysis of the ASAR image and ocean stratification profiles show that the observed ISWs are depression waves. Analyzing the tidal current finds that these waves are locally generated. The wavelength and amplitude of the ECS ISW are much smaller than their counter- parts in the South China Sea （SCS）. The propagation speed of the ECS ISW is also an order of magnitude smaller than that of the SCS ISW. The observed ISWs in the ECS happened during a spring tide period.

Forage fishes are ecologically and economically important low trophic level species,and in recent years interest in their biology and management has *** Herring are emblemat-ic of the management issues facing forage species-they are central components of the Northeast Pacific pelagic food web and support important commercial *** addition,the importance of Herring to indigenous peoples have made them cultural keystone *** employed a participatory process to promote collaborative priority-setting for this critical forage *** with managers,the fisher-ies industry,indigenous peoples,and scientists,we co-constructed a conceptual model of the Pacific Her-ring social-ecological system(SES)in the Northeast *** then identified a set of questions,that,if answered,would significantly increase our ability to sustainably manage the Herring *** objective was to generate a road map for scientists who wish to conduct useful forage fish research,for resource managers who wish to develop new research efforts that could fill critical gaps,and for public agencies and private foundations seeking to prioritize funding on forage fish issues in the *** this socio-cultural centrality comes complexity for fisheries *** participatory process highlighted the value of conceptualizing the full SES,overcame disciplinary differences in scientific approaches,research philos-ophy,and language,and charted a path forward for future research and management for forage species.

An empirical movement model for sixgill sharks in Puget Sound： Combining observed and unobserved behavior

Understanding the movement of animals is fundamental to population and community ecology. Historically, it has been difficult to quantify movement patterns of most fishes, but technological advances in acoustic telemetry have increased our abilities to monitor their movement. In this study, we combined small-scale active acoustic tracking with large-scale passive acoustic monitoring to develop an empirical movement model for sixgill sharks in Puget Sound, WA, USA. We began by testing whether a correlated random walk model described the daily movement of sixgills; however, the model failed to capture home-ranging behavior. We added this behavior and used the resultant model （a biased random walk model） to determine whether daily movement patterns are able to explain large-scale seasonal movement. The daily model did not explain the larger-scale pat- terns of movement observed in the passive monitoring data. In order to create the large-scale patterns, sixgills must have per- formed behaviors （large, fast directed movements） that were unobserved during small-scale active tracking. In addition, seasonal shifts in location were not captured by the dally model. We added these ＇unobserved＇ behaviors to the model and were able to capture large-scale seasonal movement of sixgill sharks over 150 days. The development of empirical models of movement al- lows researchers to develop hypotheses and test mechanisms responsible for a species movement behavior and spatial distribution. This knowledge will increase our ability to successfully manage species of concern [Current Zoology 58 （1）： 103-115, 2012].

The quality of environmental data and its possible impact on the marine species habitat modelling are often overlooked while the sources for these data are *** study selected sea surface temperature(SST)from two commonly used sources,the noaa Ocean Watch and IRI/LDEO Climate Data Library,and then constructed habitat suitability index model to evaluate the influences of SST from the two sources on the outcomes of Ommastrephes bartramii habitat models for the months of July–October in the Northwest Pacific Ocean during 1996–*** study examined the differences in the amount of estimated unfavourable/favourable habitat area when the SST used for model building and inference were the same or *** in suitable habitat area calculated from SST was insensitive to the two different SST *** the fishing season of ***,the changes of magnitude and trend of monthly suitable habitat area in August and September were similar over time,whereas there were large differences for July and ***,there is a substantial lack of consistency in the *** habitat distribution based on SST of two *** study considered the sources of environmental data for habitat modelling and then inferred species habitat distribution whether by the same or different data source.

Geochemical Assessment of Heavy Metals in Surface Sediments： A Case Study of the Tema Port, Ghana

Ten trace and heavy metals （Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cu, Cd, As, Co, Cr and V） were analysed in sediments collected from nine stations at the Tema Port of Ghana, during the dry and wet seasons. Analysis of samples was done using INAA （instrumental neutron activation analysis） for Mn, V, Cu, As and Cd, and AAS （atomic absorption spectrophotometry） for Fe, Cr, Zn, Ni and Co. The concentrations of metals in sediments followed the orders Fe 〉 V〉 Mn 〉 Cd 〉 Ni 〉 Zn 〉 Cu 〉As, for the dry season and Fe 〉 V 〉 Ni 〉 Cu 〉 Zn 〉 Mn 〉 Cd 〉As, for the wet season. Concentrations of Co and Cr were below detection limit, whiles Cu, Cd and Ni were found to be above the TELs （threshold effect levels） of noaa＇s （National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration＇s） SQuiRTs （screening quick reference tables） at most sites. Estimated enrichment factors for individual metals showed very high contamination of the port＇s sediments, with Cd occurring at all sites, and Cu, As, V and Ni occurring at some sites for both dry and wet seasons. Although sediments from the Tema Port were highly enriched with Cd, Cu, Ni and V above natural background levels, the overall PLI （pollution load index） per sampling station considering background values of the analysed elements indicated that metal pollution in the port＇s sediment is below 1, indicating relatively unpolluted sediment.

A bruptchanges in an 8000-year precipitationreconst ruction for Nevada,the Western USA

A scanning t-test algorithm for detecting multiple time-scale abrupt changes in the level of a time-series was used to analyze an 8000 year time series of annual precipitation which was reconstructed from tree rings for the Nevada Climate Division 3 in the western USA. The tree ring samples were gathered from eight states in the southwestern USA. Twenty-two change-points were identified by the algorithm and these were used to partition the tree-ring series into twenty-three relatively Wet/Normal/Dry episodes. These twenty-three episodes were collaborated by a coherency analysis of abrupt changes between the precipitation reconstruction series and the TIC/δ^18O records from cored sediments of Pyramid Lake in Nevada, and by comparison with published results from related studies. These episodes were also compared with studies of the global climate change and with records of climate change in China during the same periods. The results suggest that the precipitation reconstruction series is quite valuable for climate-change research on multi-centurial time-scales in the western USA, and that the scanning t-test and coherency detection algorithms may have a wide use for detecting multiple time-scale abrupt changes in a long time series. As the TIC and δ^18O record series are high resolution with unequal sampling intervals ranging between 3 and 14 years, a new algorithm was developed to deal with the unequal time intervals in the series.

Saco-Casco Bays Inundation Modeling of Five Winter Storms

Coastal inundation along the northeast coast of the United States is usually caused by strong winter storms(WS).However,the accurate prediction of coastal inundation due to the WS is ***,our study aims to develop a unique high-resolution modeling system to accurately predict the coastal inundation in the ungauged coastal areas of Saco-Casco Bays and map the flood risk zones to potential sea level rise due to these *** of five classic WS in 2014-2015 were *** inundation models are based on FVCOM that uses unstructured grid to capture the minor to significant flooding near the shallow areas of the bays,harbor entrance and river *** this study,topography has been generated from the noaa’s integrated dataset of Portland,ME 1/3 arc-second MHW digital elevation *** model runs were driven by two different sets of meteorological(NECOFS WRF and noaa’s NAM WRF)forcing to examine the effect of spatial resolution on the predicted *** study reveals that among the five storm surge cases,WS-III produces a maximum surge of 0.7 m and WS-II cause a minimum surge of 0.3 *** all scenarios,southward wind-driven coastal current flowing towards Biddeford Pool,Pine Point and Camp Ellis forms a small-scale eddy which causes significant inundation however strength of the current varies *** experiments have been carried out using NECOFS WRF simulation products with varying parameters of marshland elevation and bottom friction to understand the influence of intertidal storage on the predicted flooding.
