Laponite:a promising nanomaterial to formulate high-performance water-based drilling fluids

High-performance water-based drilling fluids(HPWBFs)are essential to wellbore stability in shale gas exploration and *** is a synthetic hectorite clay composed of disk-shaped *** paper analyzed the application potential of laponite in HPWBFs by evaluating its shale inhibition,plugging and lubrication *** inhibition performance was studied by linear swelling test and shale recovery *** performance was analyzed by nitrogen adsorption experiment and scanning electron microscope(SEM)*** pressure lubricity test was used to evaluate the lubrication *** results show that laponite has good shale inhibition property,which is better than commonly used shale inhibitors,such as polyamine and *** can effectively plug shale *** considerably decreases the surface area and pore volume of shale,and SEM results show that it can reduce the porosity of shale and form a seamless *** is beneficial to increase lubricating property of drilling fluid by enhancing the drill pipes/wellbore interface smoothness and isolating the direct contact between wellbore and drill ***,laponite can reduce the fluid loss *** to mechanism analysis,the good performance of laponite nanoparticles is mainly attributed to the disk-like nanostructure and the charged surfaces.

Mobile edge computing(MEC)provides services to devices and reduces latency in cellular internet of things(IoT)***,the challenging problem is how to deploy MEC servers economically and *** paper investigates the deployment problem of MEC servers of the real-world road network by employing an improved genetic algorithm(GA)*** first use the threshold-based K-means algorithm to form vehicle clusters according to their *** then select base stations(BSs)based on clustering center coordinates as the deployment locations set for potential MEC *** further select BSs using a combined simulated annealing(SA)algorithm and GA to minimize the deployment *** simulation results show that the improved GA deploys MEC servers *** addition,the proposed algorithm outperforms GA and SA algorithms in terms of convergence speed and solution quality.

Calculation on inner wall temperature in oil-gas pipe flow

Based on the energy equation of gas-liquid flow in pipeline,the explicit temperature drop formula for gas-liquid steady state calculation was *** formula took into consideration the Joule-Thomson effect,impact of terrain undulation and heat transfer with the surroundings along the *** of temperature iteration loop and integration of the explicit temperature equation,instead of enthalpy energy equation,into the conjugated hydraulic and thermal computation have been found to improve the efficiency of ***,the inner wall temperature of gas-liquid flow was calculated by using explicit temperature equation and inner wall convective heat transfer coefficient of mixed flow which can be obtained by liquid convective heat transfer coefficient and gas convective heat transfer coefficient on the basis of liquid *** temperature results of gas-liquid flow and inner wall in the case example presented both agree well with those in professional multiphase computational software OLGA.

Axial laminar velocity field calculation and optimization for power-law fluid in eccentric annulus with cutting bed

The formation of a cutting bed in an annulus involves safety problems in drilling especially in the horizontal well and the directional well. In this work, three axial laminar velocity field calculation models for the power-law fluid in an annulus are modified by considering the effect of the cutting bed. The proposed models are employed to numerically simulate the annulus flow with the cutting bed. Verified by the experimental data in literature, all of them can be applied to the situation of the annulus flow with the cutting bed. The modified concentric annulus model enjoys the best performance, while the flat channel flow model has the worst performance.

A vortex induced vibration of marine riser in waves

A marine riser transporting fluid in the Bohai Sea was selected as study object,using an experi-mental and numerical method to study its vortex induced vibration in waves. A similarity theory was used in the experiment to derive the experimental model from a practical model,the dy-namic response of a riser model was measured in waves. A corresponding numerical simulation was performed using a finite element method. Comparisons were made with the results between the experiment and the numerical simulation. Some valuable results were obtained.

Plugging performance and mechanism of an oil-absorbing gel for lost circulation control while drilling in fractured formations

Lost circulation of drilling fluid is one of the most common engineering problems in the drilling process of fractured *** this study,an oil-absorbing polymer gel synthesized using compound monomers with rigid and flexible chains was applied to control the oil-based drilling fluid loss while *** microstructure,oil-absorbing performance,and plugging performance the gel was investigated.A large number of dense pores on the surface of the gel were observed,which allowed the oil molecules to enter the internal space of the *** initial oil absorption capacity of the gel was fast,and it increased with the increase in the temperature and decrease in the particle size,reaching 20.93 g/g at140℃.At a high temperature of 140℃,the bearing pressure capacity of the gel formula containing particles of different particle sizes reached 7.6 MPa for a fracture of a width of 3 mm,showing that the oil-absorbing gel have excellent plugging performance at high *** mechanism of the gel was investigated through visualized fracture plugging *** show that the dynamic migratio n,particle-swelling,particle-bridging,particle-aggregation,deformation-filling,and compaction-plugging contribute to the whole lost circulation control process,reflecting that the plugging performance can be effectively enhanced by improving the aggregation and filling degrees of the gel with different particle sizes.

Self-healing hydrogels have attracted tremendous attention in the field of oil and gas drilling and production engineering because of their excellent self-healing performance after physical *** this study,a series of double network self-healing(DN_(SA))hydrogels based on hydrophobic association and ionic bond were prepared for plugging pores and fractures in formations in oil and gas drilling and production *** mechanical,rheological,and self-healing properties of the DN_(SA)hydrogels were *** revealed that the DN_(SA)hydrogels exhibited excellent mechanical properties with a tensile stress of 0.67 MPa and toughness of 7069 kJ/cm^(3) owing to the synergistic effect of the double *** addition,the DN_(SA)hydrogels exhibited excellent compression resistance,notch insensitivity,and self-healing *** DN_(SA)-2 hydrogel was granulated and made into gel particles with different particle sizes and used as a plugging *** self-healing mechanism of DN_(SA)-2 hydrogel particles in fractures was explored,and it’s plugging effect on fractures of different widths and porous media of different permeabilities were *** results revealed that the plugging capacity of the DN_(SA)-2 hydrogel particles for a fracture with width of 5 mm and a porous medium with a permeability of 30μm^(2) was 3.45 and 4.21 MPa,respectively,which is significantly higher than those of commonly used plugging agents in the *** DN_(SA)hydrogels with excellent mechanical and self-healing properties prepared in this study will provide a new approach for applying hydrogels in oil and gas drilling and production engineering.

The mathematical model of dynamic loads was developed based on an analysis of the polished rod load of beam pumps, and the variation of the dynamic loads and the computation of the minimum and maximum limits during a complete pumping cycle were given out by solving the *** examples verify that it is necessary to take into account the inertial and vibration loads while calculating polished rod *** the prophase of the pumping production, the dynamic to polished rod load ratio is relatively *** the ratio decreases rapidly and becomes small after entering stable ***, the total deformation of rod and tubing in CBM wells is much smaller than that in oil fields, and the deformation caused by the dynamic loads is also relatively *** result of this work is the calculation of the dynamic *** application of this calculation for the sucker rod pumping system in CBM wells can give the desired accuracy of polished rod load and the dynamometer cards, which provides a reasonable basis for the design and selection of beam pumps.

Application of sustainable basil seed as an eco-friendly multifunctional additive for water-based drilling fluids

Basil seed,containing anionic heteropolysaccharides in its outer pericarp,swells as gelatinous hydrocolloid when soaked in *** this study,basil seed powder(BSP)was used as a multifunctional additive for water-based drilling *** chemical composition,water absorbency,rheological properties of aqueous suspension of BSP were *** effect of BSP on the rheological and filtration of bentonitebased drilling fluid before and after thermal aging was *** inhibition characteristics were evaluated by linear swelling,shale cuttings dispersion and shale immersion *** improvement by BSP was measured with extreme pressure lubricity *** results revealed that incorporation of BSP into bentonite suspension improved rheological and filtration properties effectively after thermal aging of 120℃.BSP exhibited superior inhibitive capacity to xanthan and synergistic effect with *** could reduce friction by forming hydration *** nanoscale three-dimensional network structures enable BSP to maintain high water retention and absorb strongly on bentonite and metal surface,contributing to enhanced rheology,filtration,inhibition and lubrication *** versatile characteristic of BSP,as well as biodegradation makes it a promising additive using in high performance water-based drilling fluid and a potential alternative to conventional synthetic polymers.
