Modeling the influence of livestock grazing pressure on grassland bird distributions

Background:The influence of vegetative changes due to livestock grazing on grassland birds is well-recognized because these birds are heavily influenced by vegetative ***,species distribution models(SDMs)use direct variables,resources that the animal consumes or requires to persist in an area(e.g.,water)to define and project a species’niche and *** variables,which are features the animal does not consume or require for persistence but with which it may still interact,are often *** objective was to improve the traditional SDMs projecting the distribution of three summer resident South Texas grassland birds(Northern Bobwhite Colinus virginianus,Eastern Meadowlark Sturnella magna,and Cassin’s Sparrow Peucaea cassinii)by incorporating livestock grazing pressure,an indirect variable,into five SDM algorithms:BioClim,generalized linear model,MaxEnt,boosted regression tree,and random *** collected data from the Coloraditas Grazing Research and Demonstration Area(CGRDA),a 7684-ha area located on the San Antonio Viejo Ranch(SAV)in South *** used several relevant environmental characteristics to build SDMs and compared model performance(AUC and TSS)with and without grazing pressure as an indirect ***:Machine learning models(MaxEnt and random forest)had the highest predictive performance for all species,with random forest being the most consistent for each *** and generalized linear model remained constant or only marginally improved with the addition of the grazing ***:Our findings suggest that model selection for SDM should include consideration of species prevalence,and machine-learning algorithms should be preferred when the target species is of low or unknown ***,livestock grazing has measurable influence on grassland bird species’distributions and should be included in SDMs as an indirect variable in addition to associated vegetative changes.

Molecular studies on donkey mitochondrial sequences have clearly defined two distinct maternal lineages involved in ***,domestication histories of these two lineages remain *** therefore compared several population characteristics between these two lineages based on global sampling,which included 171 sequences obtained in this study(including Middle Asian,East Asian,and African samples)plus 536 published sequences(including European,Asian,and African samples).The two lineages were clearly separated from each other based on whole mitochondrial genomes and partial non-coding displacement loop(D-loop)sequences,*** Clade I lineage experienced an increase in population size more than 8000 years ago and shows a complex haplotype *** contrast,the population size of the Clade II lineage has remained relatively constant,with a simpler haplotype *** the distribution of the two lineages was almost equal across the Eurasian mainland,they still presented discernible but complex geographic bias in most parts of Africa,which are known as their domestication *** from sub-Saharan Africa tended to descend from the Clade I lineage,whereas the Clade II lineage was dominant along the East and North coasts of ***,the migration routes inferred from diversity decay suggested different expansion across China between the two ***,these differences indicated non-simultaneous domestication of the two lineages,which was possibly influenced by the response of pastoralists to the desertification of the Sahara and by the social expansion and trade of ancient humans in Northeast Africa,respectively.

Bacterial Microflora on Freshwater Prawn(Macrobrachium rosenbergii)and Culture Water Associated with Public Health Concern

Quantitative and qualitative analyses of important bacterial content for public health concern(total bacterial count,total coliforms,faecal coliforms,Salmonella and Vibrio cholerae)of cultured fresh water prawn and farm water which has significant role in order to manage sustainable aquaculture were carried *** parameters of prawn(Macrobrachium rosenbergii)and farm water were determined by following the ISO standard *** bacterial Count(standard plate count)found in prawn samples ranged from 5.55 to 5.71 log CFU/g while 4.13 to 4.18 log CFU/mL in water *** the other hand,total coliforms found in prawn sample ranged between 1.96 to 2.46 log CFU/g whereas in water sample 2.07 to 2.46 log CFU/mL total coliforms were *** case of faecal coliforms,the number ranged between 0.96 to 1.42 log CFU/g in prawn sample and 1.59 to 1.81 in water *** Vibrio cholerae was absent in both prawns and water sample and Salmonella was detected in two tested ponds for both prawn and water sample.

Nutritional Quality of Meat from Cattle Breed in livestock Production Area of Cameroon

In Cameroon, foods of animal origin are an important part of the population’s diet. To improve meat consumption and assure its safety, the Government plan a project for the industrialization of cattle and pig industries by building a slaughter chain, cold stores and acquiring of vehicles and trucks for the transport of meat from livestock production areas to other parts of the country. Maroua city in the Far North Region has been selected to host a modern mixed slaughterhouse with a slaughter capacity of 150 cattle/day. To assess the impact of this project, it is important to define a baseline in term of beef quality prior to the implementation of such a project. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the nutritional quality of beef in Maroua (as a reference for livestock production area in Cameroon) in relation to demographics of cattle (production system, type of production, age, breed, body condition score [BCS], and sex). In 2014, data on demographics of 202 cattle, randomly selected in the traditional slaughterhouses of Maroua were collected. At the end of the slaughter chain, approximately 250 g of thigh were sampled from each animal selected. However, 76 randomly selected thigh meat samples were suggested for chemical composition analysis by using standard methods. Results revealed that dry matter (26.30% - 29.88% of fresh matter), ash (0.92% - 1.09% of fresh matter), total fat (10.12 - 19.58 of fresh matter) and protein (8.60% - 27.59% of fresh matter) content of beef were between the acceptable ranges for table meats. The total protein content found was affected by the BCS, the age at slaughter, the breed and the sex of the animal. In addition, as expected, the total fat content increased with the BCS and varied with the age at slaughter and the type of production. Effect of calcium silicate on nutrient use of lowland rice and greenhouse gas emission from a paddy soil under alternating wetting and drying

In intensively irrigated rice cultivation,plant-available silicon(Si)is a crucial nutrient for improving rice *** a source of Si,calcium silicate(CaSiO3)was amended to evaluate the effect of silicate fertilizer on rice production,nitrogen(N)use efficiency,and greenhouse gas(GHG)emission under alternating wetting and drying in a pot experiment using a tropical soil from a paddy field of the International Rice Research Institute(IRRI)in the *** levels of CaSiO3 amendment,0,112.7,224.5,and 445.8 kg ha^-1,with the recommended N rate were *** results showed that although CaSiO3amendment of 112.7 kg ha^-1resulted in higher rice straw,improved N use efficiency,and reduced N2O emission,there was no difference in grain yield among the four levels of CaSiO3 amendment owing to relatively lower harvest ***,CaSiO3 amendment showed a reverse trend between CH4 and N2O emissions as it reduced N2O emission while led to significantly increased CH4 emission and global warming ***,CaSiO3 amendment was a possible alternative to improve N use efficiency and increase rice straw biomass,but it needs to be reviewed in line with grain yield production and GHG *** is also imperative to test an optimal method of silicate fertilizer amendment in future research in order to compromise a negative impact in tropical soils.

Body weight is a crucial trait that aids farmers in decision-making regarding vaccinations, feeding, marketing and selection during the breeding programs. The study was conducted to investigate the effect of sex and age on body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS) and some blood biochemical parameters (BBP) and to determine the correlation amongst BW, BCS and BBP of non-descriptive goats at Santombe communal farming system. Blood samples were collected from 33 apparently healthy goats (27 females and 6 males) aged 6 - 8 tooth with a mean BW (32.62 ± 11.39 kg) while BCS (3.17 ± 0.39) was taken by means of palpating the lumbar area, sternum and the ribs. The BCS was rated on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being emaciated and 5 being extremely fat. The blood samples were analyzed using Cobas intergra 400 plus chemistry analyzer, Roche for biochemical parameters such as total protein (TP), urea, cholesterol (Chol), magnesium (Mg), phosphorous (P) and calcium (Ca) with mean values of 72.79 ± 5.84 mg/l, 2.76 ± 1.16 mmol/l, 2.08 ± 0.40 mmol/l, 1.09 ± 0.09 mmol/l, 2.30 ± 0.49 mmol/l and 2.45 ± 0.12 mmol/l respectively. Sex and age had significant effects on BW, BCS and some biochemical parameters. The BW and BCS for males were significantly higher than for females. Correlation results indicated that BW had a positive relationship with BCS (r = 0.677), TP and BW (r = 0.400), Chol and BCS (r = 0.4025) and Mg and TP (r = -0.075). Age and sex had significant influences on BW, BCS and some blood biochemical parameters. Consideration of the factors can aid in determining the accurate diagnosis of the nutritional status of goats.

Local People’s Knowledge and Perceptions of Wildlife Conservation in Southeastern Zimbabwe

This study aimed at examining local people’s knowledge and perceptions of wildlife conservation in southeastern Zimbabwe. Data were collected between October and November in 2012 using a purposive sampling approach of households (n = 114) in communities adjacent to Gonarezhou National Park. Our results show that local people were aware of the Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources (CAMPFIRE) and Gonarezhou, and their associated purposes. However, our results suggest that local people had inadequate knowledge about the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (GLTFCA) and its purpose. Moreover, mixed perceptions about the impact of the GLTFCA on local livelihoods and conservation in the study area were recorded. Finally, the results indicated that improving park-community relationships, education and awareness programmes on natural resources conservation could assist in raising the status of conservation in Gonarezhou and GLTFCA.

Condition of Local Cattle at Slaughterhouses in Phnom Penh City,Cambodia
